Pahokee City Marina - Lake Okeechobee

The marina is located in Pahokee (indigenous for saw grass), right on Lake Okeechobee. It's a…read morerelatively new marina so it's quite clean and modern in appearance. Perhaps it's because it's off-season but there were only three or four boats moored there. Several families fished off the municipal pier but didn't seem to be catching anything. The store is a combo bait shop/museum and gift shop. There's the hide of a 13.2 foot alligator behind the counter and the girl working there says that's a 'small' one. The prices for the shirts and caps were a bit steep but my friend got one anyway. I was given an interesting history of Pahokkee and the lake. This is the only place where you can drive up and se the lake. The rest is surrounded by dikes, created to prevent the tragedy of the 1928 hurricane which swept through, flooding this town, Clewiston, Belle Grade and others, killing as many as 2,500 people. There's a KOA campground here, a restaurant, showers and restroom facilities. All well-maintained.

I am sure this was a great marina when it was built, but when we went there in 2020 it was falling…read moreapart and in disrepair. It is too bad no one kept it up. It cost millions to develop and now it is almost abandoned, hardly any boats, most of the docks are not in use and unsafe. There are light posts that have fallen down, holes everywhere, abandoned buildings and restaurants. There were quite a few people fishing which was fun. Great marina when it was built i am sure, just not now. Algae was also bad too, seemed to congregate there.

There are 6 cabins for rent as well. The View!!! There are two bathhouses with laundry, 2 additional restrooms, a pool, a restaurant, a store, public boat ramps, a lighted fishing pier, a Tiki bar and a full service marina! Each site offers a level, grassed pad with a picnic table. Full hookups!!!! Open fires are not allowed on the campsites. They also offer weekly and monthly rates with a deposit for electricity. We are staying here for 4 nights in a 30' class A. Have I mentioned the view?! We didn't have to level AT ALL! Just stabilized. Have I mentioned the view?! Pets are welcome with the usual leash laws. They also offer Wi-Fi but only near the registration office. The Verizon signal on my cell phone is at full bars and AT&T (which we use for TV) is strong too. The campground is located close to town but is very quiet. I haven't heard any cars or trucks at all and we have all the windows open enjoying the wonderful breeze coming off the lake. Did I mention the view?! Btw I'm doing something I never do - I'm writing this review after just arriving. I don't think anything in my review will change except maybe adding some more pictures and mentioning the view :) ***Update to my hasty review- although we did enjoy our camping experience here there are a couple of things to add. First off the campsites are extremely close together. I didn't realize how close until we'd been there a day and I noticed how close the neighbors power poles were to us. I'm so so so happy we didn't get any neighbors during our stay. Second, there is a Paper Mill in the area and boy can you smell it! That wonderful sewage smell! Yuck! But only at night! During the day I didn't notice it at all. So we left the windows open during the day and turned the AC on at night. Problem solved. Finally, the rv/trailer park over the canal is really dumpy and the people that live there are very noisy at night. We clearly heard a party both Friday and Saturday nights and a fight on Friday. So because of all of these things I dropped my review down a star. And I just have to mention that the view is spectacular!

I just moved to South Florida from Connecticut and brought my kayak with me in hopes of seeing some wildlife. My boyfriend doesn't have a kayak of his own and suggested we book a rental with a tour guide to show us around - I am so glad we did! Misty and her super cute canine, Abu, were the most amazing tour guides ever. Before our arrival, Misty kept in contact with excellent communication. She provided quality rental equipment, and not only did we feel very safe the entire time, she is an expert at spotting wildlife. The Peanut Island paddle was suggested for us - we were so blessed to see an abundance of manatees floating under us, a stingray, a starfish so big I almost called the Guinness Book of World Records (haha only half-joking!) and plenty of beautiful birds, lizards and fish. The excursion took about two hours and we never felt rushed at all, although it was just the right amount of time before we started to get a little tired. Can't thank Salty Dog Paddle enough for this incredibly special and very memorable experience. Misty was even thoughtful enough to take photos and videos for us which she sent after - she really was the best part of this experience for us!! Highly recommended!!!
