Walking into the curling club you get this classic ballroom vibe that overlooks the club. You walk past the overlook of the lanes and you hit this little bar. Everything about this room makes you feel like you belong to the club and you have curled for years. The tables have signatures from special events held there. There are locals always there ready to talk shop and help spread the love of the game. So at least go a have a beer, grab some food and watch some skips and sweepers! Curling for beginners! I got the best crash course from the great staff/ experienced curlers. I can't express my gratitude of how patient they were on each detail and every step to overall get our team to be able to PLAY a game! They started us off by explaining some rules and etiquette. I have never curled before so this was a first for me. They taught us how to push off from the block. Slide the rocks back and forth. Teach us the lingo and hand signals. How to "curl " the rock and the correct way to sweep. Then after we got the basics out of the way, they taught us how to score. We got to play and it was an absolute blast. I was using mussels I didn't know I had. It's so easy to get into it. We got so competitive. Once we got a rock in the area you were actually supposed to. We were all Jacked. It's was a lot of bonding that we needed and something that I can't wait to do again.

Among a few other completely ridiculous mishaps in which the decc was responsible for the day of the wedding as well as during the wedding pertaining to prime rib that was completely uncooked... the worst of it all is that unknown to the bride and groom, a family member safely placed all gifts under the gift table... resulting in every gift being left behind after the wedding reception. The decc staff has placed blame on the bride and groom as well as the rest of the family/guests. They have not taken accountability at all whatsoever, which is very concerning being there is clearly a very dishonest thief working for them. The decc has completely ignored and disregarded all contact from the bride after the initial conversation where they proceeded to place blame elsewhere, extremely unprofessional. This place is completely ridiculous and I would not recommend for any reason. Will be sharing this experience with as many people as we can reach in hopes of saving others from having a horrible experience.

I'm not sure what else they do besides putting on the Run, Smelt, Run! parade on the shore of Lake Superior in May but that's more than enough. I've been meaning to go back but it's a ways off from Detroit and finances are always a challenge so who knows if that will happen especially since ... gasp! This year might have been the final smelt parade. Jim Ouray, the founder of the smelt parade is stepping down as head honcho, citing the headaches of securing funding and doing all the clerical work which he's pretty tired of at his age. Hell, it sounds exhausting to me and I'm a good deal younger than him. He still wants to do the fun stuff, like play King Neptune, but unless someone steps up and takes the reins, which nobody has yet, it's curtains for the smelt parade. As grandpa would say "Well, that's too damn bad!" The smelt parade is a riot! It's kind of a northern bastardization of Mardi Gras. We have something similar in Detroit called the Marche du Nain Rouge. Ours is bigger and we wear red and dress like demons sometimes while in Duluth they wear silver and usually rock some sort of smelt themed costume. Theirs is more fun and soulful and flipped out if you ask me though. There's all manner of wacky smelt themed costumes- Smelt Lumberjack, Smelt Pope, Smeltbot 3000, Smelt Mayor and the fabulous Smelt Queen among dozens of others. There's a second line jazz band playing as the merrymakers dance down the Duluth boardwalk. There's a smelt fry and more music at the parade's conclusion at the Zeitgeist Theater. There's stilt walkers and a whole Rite of Spring type ceremony. Bye bye winter, let's party! Of course they're farther north than the Motor City so it's in May and not March. That's also the height of smelting time here - the reason for the season. Sorry it took me so long to write this. Hell, I had to create the listing, too. None of the normies here on Yelp are messing with this bizarre wonderfulness.
