On the recommendation of friends, and with the essential assistance of Google maps, we fetched up here for a late booking on a humid July Wednesday night. Very friendly wait staff showed us to one of very few outside tables adjacent to a not very busy residential street. (As far as I could judge there were very few tables inside the restaurant either so advance booking is essential)
The food on the night is whatever mama deigns to produce which, in this case, was two types of bruschetta - onion, olive oil etc and caponata - followed by spaghetti carbonara and lasagne. This in turn was followed by an unidentifiable beef in a light batter accompanied by a token serving of potatoes, fries, croquettes and, I think polenta. Dessert for her ladyship was canelli. We had ordered two glasses of house white to begin fully expecting to switch to red as the meal progressed but the white was so good we ordered a bottle (A very agreeable Terras do Pó) . Unfortunately it was their last one so we had a bottle of Pino Grigio for the second bottle (I know, don't judge me!).
In terms of quantity, the meal was hard to beat. The carbonara alone was enough to feed three to the extent that we took a doggie bag of same for lunch next day. I did feel, however, that most of the dishes were on the tepid to cold side. This was particular obvious in the pasta which, while very tasty, had congealed somewhat with the eggs so looked a lot less appetising than it should have.
As it was pot luck, no menus were proffered and the verbal introductions left a lot to be desired given the inevitable language barrier but we struggled through.
I honestly can't see how this formula will work in such a small premises so far from the Lagos tourist centre of gravity. Maybe it's supposed to be a local restaurant for local folk but everybody there did appear to be visitors, at least while we were there. We went very much out of our way to find Sicility (NB Almost impossible to find on Google which invariably prompts Sicily instead so there's that too!) I'm not convinced on the strength of this one visit that a return trek is warranted. Personally I would love it to succeed as the formula is great. But, but, but. read more
