If you want a chic and trendy ambiance and a lot of food for lunchtime, I'd recommend going here…read more However, if you're a foodie who doesn't care about service or environment, then this is probably not the place for you. Their lunch two-course menu is only 16 euros and gets you four small plates. You pick two small plates for the appetizer and two small plate for the main course. However, the "small" plates for the main course are massive and more than enough food than you need for lunch. For the appetizer, I can the lamb tartare. It was covered in sauce and mixed with so many ingredients I couldn't discern the taste of the lamb or even if it was raw or not. I would NOT recommend this. However, I could see a Dutch person's palate being more accustomed to this because of the flavors (I'm American). I also got the UMAMI duck. The duck was cooked well, and it was nice to have seaweed salad, but it didn't wow me. My husband got the mackerel and UMAMI duck and enjoyed how fresh the mackerel was. For the lunch, I got black bean beef tenderloin. The tenderloin is extremely tender and juicy, but the sauce is ladened with salt and a bit much. Luckily, it comes with rice and noodles to balance the flavor out. I would've loved this more if I was high... should've gotten high. I also got the pork belly, which was good. My husband also got the pork belly, but instead, got the halibut. The halibut was a great choice as they cooked it to flaky perfection. It came with a puree on the side that went with it all, but they also added mint gel, which tasted like toothpaste. Overall, as an Asian foodie fanatic, this Asian with a French twist menu was not for me. It is more for the Dutch tongue as things are saltier and saucier. The food is of good quality, and the value is off the charts as you get a lot of food with great service, but giving this 5 stars is really stretching it. Perhaps, it's because I went for lunch? (Two stars is for the food itself; three is for the service)

Umami, owned by Michelin-starred chef Han Ji, is a gem in a city full of wonderful restaurants. Many of his Asian fusion dishes are deconstructed allowing you to experience all of the amazing flavors. The duck, reminiscent of Peking Duck was as good as any I've had in Beijing. The tenderloin shows he knows how to work with Western cuts of meat. Service could be a little slow, but was always friendly.

I heard this was the only Asian Fusion restaurant in the Netherlands to receive a Michelin star, so…read morewe came here to celebrate my father in-law's birthday. The decor and service was very top-notch, it definitely deserved that star (unlike Koriander in Drachten). The food was definitely an interesting mix of Asian and French cuisines and all the combinations were pleasingly tasty and innovative. Food: 5/5 We took the 5 course chef's menu and unfortunately I forgot to write down the various dishes. However, everything was fresh, delicious and with many interesting compositions. One thing I really liked was that there was very limited amounts of seasoning and that allowed the freshness of the food's natural flavors to come out. The highlight of the meal was definitely the bone marrow. It may seem quite intimidating because it is served in the bone, but it was amazingly flavorful and tender. One thing I liked was that you can do a wine pairing per glass. Which means that you can choose which dishes you wanted a wine to drink with. This also meant that you didn't have to commit to a whole wine tasting (which is difficult for me because I'm a light weight and can't drink much). Service: 4/5 The staff was excellent and came around visiting our table, making sure we had enough water, wine and explaining all the dishes. Their wine sommelier is also amazing and recommended good wines that paired well with the dishes. For example, one wine paired with the venison tasted different before and after eating the meat. Atmosphere: 4/5 The decor exudes a luxe atmosphere and the decor is a very pretty understated Asian theme. (No tacky dragons - thank goodness...) Value: 4/5 A 5 course chef's menu was €57. It certainly isn't cheap, but the food was very tasty and well worth the money.

A Oriental/French fusion affair done to an exceptional level. Expect to pay around 40 Euro for for courses. A great wine selection for all budgets and some of the best service you will find in Den Haag. This is also one of the few places I've been to recently where you can have a conversation with those around you without having to shout. My only gripe, even though it's a small one was the time between courses. One of our party just had two while the rest of us had four so an extra bottle of wine was required. Not a bad thing unless your tastes are for the more expensive.

Shabu Shabu is a big all you can eat type restaurant situated near the centre of The Hague…read more Personally, I have a long history with Shabu Shabu, having gone there for many years sometimes even on a weekly basis. In recent years, I have only been there five times. Most recently more than 6 months ago. I can safely say that Shabu Shabu's quality has dropped over the years. My recent visit there had me feeling somewhat disappointed, mainly with the selection on the menu. It's clear that Shabu Shabu has removed many items from the menu and only kept very basic stuff. In the past, the choice of sushi was very broad, now not anymore. They removed a lot of nigiri options and chose to focus more on maki, which is now unfortunately a common thing that sushi restaurants do as rolls are cheaper and easier to make than nigiri. When it comes to the other options besides sushi, there's sashimi and other Japanese foods such as tempura and meat. I cannot say much about these other foods as I always mainly ate the sushi. I can only say that I wasn't impressed by the other options then and I'm still not impressed by them now. That hasn't changed. To get to the point, the quality of the food is decent. It's not terrible nor particularly great. As said earlier, the quality was better in the past. There are so many sushi restaurants in The Hague and this place is certainly no longer my first choice. Moving on, another thing that is a bit off putting is the all you can eat style, which was always the case but has become less attractive over the years. They've become more strict and it's clear that they care more about making money. Before, you had more rounds and the way you selected the food was done on paper with a server coming to get it. Now it's all digital and more controlled. The service has become less personal as a result of this. More practical, but also less nice. In conclusion, if someone invited me there, I wouldn't decline. On the flip side, if someone wanted to eat sushi, I wouldn't bring them there. The food is fine, it's not bad and certainly not terrible. The service is what you'd expect from an all you can eat restaurant. It's a huge place with many tables. Many people go there daily and the place has been running for more than a decade now. Restaurants change and this one definitely has. Price wise it's fine. Not crazy expensive but also not as cheap as some people would want it to be. That's why I gave it 3 stars instead of 2.

Wox - "Bluefin" chu-toro

I honestly don't get it. I know the Michelin Guide can be graded on a curve in some countries, but…read morethis one really had me scratching my head. The service was good and the staff were lovely, I'll give them that. The ambiance is upscale and matches their prices -- but unfortunately, the food just didn't deliver. First off, the menu is all over the place -- Japanese, Thai, Korean, Mexican... you name it, they've thrown it on there. And as you might guess, when you try to do everything, nothing comes out quite right. We were staying at Hotel des Indes, and my husband spotted this restaurant in the Michelin Guide. It was raining, we were craving some Asian food after weeks in Europe -- so we decided to give it a shot. The name "Wox" made me think Chinese, but nope -- it's more like "Asian fusion gone rogue." We ordered the Bluefin Tuna Chu-toro, Beef Skewers, and Udon Carbonara. Let's start with the tuna: a tiny scoop of fish with ponzu and a bit of nori on top -- for 35 euros. Seriously? Sure the fish was fresh enough, but I'd bet good money it wasn't Bluefin. I travel to Japan 6-7 times a year -- trust me, I know my raw fish. Bluefin doesn't just "happen" to show up fresh in The Hague. In Ginza? Sure. Here? Not a chance. The beef skewers were actually the best of the three -- cooked tender, juicy, and flavorful, even if the seasoning was more Korean than Thai (whatever, at least it tasted good). But the Udon Carbonara was just... awful. The noodles were overcooked, the flavor flat, and there was nothing "carbonara" about it -- no egg, no pancetta, just a sad little tangle of noodles tossed in cheese. And that "side dish"? Tiny. 15 euros for that? Wow. I don't mind paying for good food -- I don't mind shelling out €1,100 at Guy Savoy in Paris or €360 for lunch at Bistro de la Mer in Amsterdam, and you don't hear me complain because those meals were worth it. But $115 USD for three small appetizers and a couple of drinks here? No, thank you.

My wife and I went there for an early dinner and we were seated in a small back room. The cuisine is Indian and everything is exceptionally fresh. We ordered the "Kebab Assortment", which wasn't at all what we were expecting (no skewers). One was ground beef spiced with coriander, one was lentil and ground beef with spices, the last was egg wrapped in potato. You got two of each of these, a tasty salad and a large basket of fresh-made naan that was some of the best we had ever had. All of the kebabs were tender and very flavorful, and the naan worked well to sop up some of the drippings from the kebabs. To drink we had mango lassi with ginger that was excellent. The service was helpful but slow, and I could not use my US credit card (which doesn't use the European chip and PIN system.) I'd definitely go back again.

To be clear, the neither the food nor the restaurant are traditional Indian, but Indian food is a heavy influence on their menu. The restaurant is a bit more upscale than what I'm accustomed to at many of my favorite Indian restaurants but not so much that it felt snobby; the ambiance was clean, well lit, and tastefully decorated in a modern European style. I'm happy that I looked at the menu in advance online, as they have an English version of the menu on their website but not in the restaurant. I ordered the Nihari Stew, which was a lightly spiced beef stew with some raw(!) diced peppers and onions in it, as well as some fresh seasonings on the side that I could add including hot chilis, a slice of lime, coriander leaves and ginger. I found that the stew was tasty and the beef was well cooked, but the flavor & number of ingredients was a bit more plain/simple that I expected, and beyond the beef, the other ingredients were all raw which didn't seem to be the best complement to a beef stew. I would have liked some cooked vegetables in it. The seasonings on the side didn't seem to be a good match either, though I love those flavors in other foods. It came with a basket of naan wedges; the naan (an Indian flat bread) appears in a lot of menu items, and I found it to be not as soft and fluffy as I expect naan to be, perhaps because it's made with whole grain flour; I would describe it as roti rather than naan. It's not bad, just mislabeled for those of us who are familiar with Indian cuisine. The restaurant has an extensive menu of wines and cocktails, but partly to save money I opted for a mango lassi instead (traditional Indian yogurt drink), which had a hint of seasoning that gave it an unusual flavor (cucumber water? not sure, it was hard to identify), and was thicker than most mango lassi's I've tried, more like a smoothie. All in all I came away from the meal a bit disappointed, as I was expecting it to have more of the aspects of Indian food that I love, but perhaps it's simply an issue of my expectations rather than the food itself. I also felt it was a bit pricey, charging €16 for a main entree, though I know that organic ingredients do cost more, so I felt the cost was enabling them to use high quality, healthy ingredients. It might be a better place for a tasty snack and beverage than a full meal if you're on a tight budget. Note that the only type of card they accept is the Maestro chip + pin debit card, otherwise make sure to bring enough cash to pay for your meal! There is a Rabobank ATM half a block away from the restaurant next to Coffee Company.
