There's a 10-week challenge to see who got strongest/lost most weight, and a party at the end, and when my wife and I went, she was so impressed by the changes everyone had made that she joined, too! I've had THREE other friends join since then, and we bought a year's subscription for our employee. It's so easy to make friends there because everyone is going through such an intense experience. The joke is, "No one joins an aerobic kickboxing gym because everything is going perfectly in their life". :-) The other saying I hear is, "People join for the aerobic kickboxing, but stay for the weightlifting." Man, I never ever thought I'd be into weightlifting, but getting strong and gaining muscle (even though I'm in my 50s!) is amazing! The people here are so diverse...gay, straight, trans...no-religion, Muslim, Christian...people in their 20s and people in their 70s(!) I made more friends here in one year than I've made in the 20 years I've lived in St Paul. What a supportive community. It's all group classes, with an instructor and fun music, and it alternates between aerobic kickboxing days (using a bag, not going against another person), and weightlifting days. I had never done either before...and now I love them both! Definitely recommend FXB on Selby Avenue! :-)

There is a mix of families, with some parents who also participate in the sport and others who don't, and a wide range of people. I nudged my son toward martial arts because of the benefits they can have for self-confidence, self-control, and, ultimately, resilience to peer pressure: something I'm sure every parent starts thinking about as their children reach the tween years. Interestingly, my son has never really been interested in traditional team sports (basketball, soccer, baseball, football, hockey, or, as he calls them, sportsball). But he absolutely loves BJJ and is genuinely excited to come to class. He has really taken to BJJ at Bellum because of the environment that Professor Derek has created. Observing the boys and girls during practice, you can see how the seniors set a good example for the juniors. Even after this relatively short time, I can see how much my own son has benefited from the environment: he is calmer under stress in other situations, highly motivated to come to class, and has quickly made new friends. As a parent, I particularly appreciate that the gym doesn't feel corporate or impersonal, but instead is run by people who genuinely want to share their love of the sport. The transparency around pricing and lack of contracts also make Bellum stand out in a good way. 10/10 would recommend.

A mixture of slow…read moreflow vinyasa and some deep stretching, Ashley did a great job with demonstrating and making sure that the environment welcomed relaxation: candlelight, gentle music, and guided breathing counts to quell even the most anxious minds. At first, I was a bit skeptical because of all the props required - 2 bolsters, a yoga block, a thick yoga blanket, and a sandbag, but after the 60-minute class, I felt SO relaxed and much less stressed out. I highly recommend taking advantage of the Sunday night restorative classes, as attendance is so few (5 people in total) and it was a great way to mentally prep for the upcoming work week. Also, the classes are also donation-based, so that is definitely a plus for those who can't afford the pricier options in the area. Yoga for all!
