It seems that this hotel was put up for sale recently, this is Nov 2021 - The Bannatyne Group, owned by former Dragon's Den star Duncan Bannatyne, has put the Charlton House Hotel & Spa in Somerset up for sale with a guide price of £4m. The converted 17th-century country house in Shepton Mallet is set in four acres of landscaped gardens and grounds. It has 28 bedrooms, an AA-rosette restaurant and bar, an orangery and 60 car parking spaces. The group acquired the freehold Grade II-listed property in 2010 out of administration. The property also has a Moroccan-themed spa with five treatment rooms, a hydro pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, as well as a gym and an outdoor tennis court. Matthew Smith, partner in the Knight Franks hotel team, which has been appointed to market the hotel, said: "We are thrilled to act on behalf of the Bannatyne Group to source a new owner for Charlton House Hotel & Spa. This multi-faceted hotel business will appeal to an array of buyer profiles to include existing hoteliers looking to expand their portfolios along with domestic and overseas investors keen to capitalise on the strong demand for private leisure business across the South West of England. Since reopening in May the business has traded ahead of forecast achieving increased occupancy and average daily rate with strong forward bookings."

Romantic and relaxing get away…read more My other half and I love this place and go once or twice a year in the winter. It's a beautiful hotel with a number of tastefully themed rooms. We particularly like the privacy of the garden lodge which is seperate from the main hotel, and the pigeon loft. The garden lodge even has a little kitchen removing the necessity of leaving the room ;) The customer service here is amazing as the staff are not only helpful but also charming. The food in the restaurant and lounge is good and the wine is exceptionally tasty. We keep going with the intention of exploring the local area but every time we just end up relaxing in the hotel. The spa includes a number of steam rooms, sauna, scented showers and small swimming pool that extends outside. I sample the massage and facial treatments available extensively and have always been pleased. We tend to go mid week as it ensures we practically have the spa to ourselves. Unfortunately you can't bring dogs so we're unlikely to be going back.

Presentation of my plate was delectable and of course, I ate every morsel of the food even though the portion was huge. The rest of the gang had the meat Sunday roast. Their gravy was even tastier. We were a large group of over ten, three adults and the rest are children ages 10-19. The waitress worked hard to accommodate us by jig-saw puzzling small tables together to make us comfortable and felt important. I love this place. Of course I love EVERYTHING about Wells.

However the female bartender was completely rude she did not want to take our drink order and when she did she had someone else give us our drinks and charge us. Mind you I hadn't said anything to this woman other than my friend and i wanted 2 beers. She then went on to call me fat and say that the men sitting at the bar would take her to town rather than me, rather rude and promiscuous language but ok we took our seats. Then I heard the guys at the bar say that the real issue was not that I was fat it was that I'm Mexican. So I didn't order any food for fear they would spit in it. My companion had already ordered so he ate it when it came out. When she brought the food she came back saying "sorry about that" and I said it's ok, but then she made it clear that she was talking to my male companion and not apologizing to me. I was also told that if I had any issues that I could leave. I get that this pub has been standing for many years but the owners are stuck in the 1500s if that's how they treat their customers. For reference I am Mexican American and I visited Wells in 2019, I would not recommend this pub to any people of color. I got way better service at another pub just around the block. I also visited London, Bath, and Wales and this was the only location where I was discriminated against.

In 1685 the Duke of Monmouth's officers gathered here on the eve of the Battle of Sedgemoor, where they were defeated by the forces of King James II. The infamous Judge Jeffries held his Bloody Assize in the Great Hall of the castle shortly afterwards. Over 200 rebels from the Monmouth Rebellion were tried, convicted and then hanged, drawn and quartered. A further 800 were transported to the West Indies to work on the sugar plantations. The building we see today is a Grade II listed, 18th century reconstruction of the original Norman castle, but does incorporate the original east gate, Castle Bow, which boasts 13th century features.

When I read this was an actual castle with medieval beginnings, I was immediately drawn in. Then I visited their website and read a few reviews and I booked it! It's a unique experience to say the least. Coming through the front, revolving door had an old world charm that was very welcoming (even though I snagged my luggage). The front desk staff were all super friendly, accommodating, and professional. The room was huge! I don't know how I ended up with a suite but I certainly did not book it nor pay extra so, the only conclusion is they upgraded me because it was available? No matter, I was in awe! I cannot recommend this place enough, it's a castle! Unforgettable.
