I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of going to the cinema. I've become a bit of an old far WAY before my time but I get annoyed by other people eating loudly, over priced tickets and uncomfortable seats. So when my friends wanted to check out the new Showcase Cinema in Cabot Circus I always cringed with defiance. I judged it was before my bum was in the seat or the ticket was in my hand. The overall experience (ticket, drink, obligatory sugary snack) will probably set you back around £15 - 20 which the scrooge in me really disapproved of. The cinema itself did have comfy seats, great sound and massive screen but at the end of the day it's just a trip to the cinema. If you're going to the movies, this cinema is probably your best bet in the city centre to watch mainstream blockbusters. read more

An identi-kit cinema to go with the many chains of Cabot Circus. Expensive popcorn and the latest blockbuster releases are to be expected here. With that said, they've got more screens than the Odeon, which does bring a bit more choice, always a good thing, and food offerings include cheesy chips. So a chain place, but still bringing a few new things to Bristol. The 'de lux' tag seems to mean comfier seats, another good thing. I think the screens are bigger at Vue out at Cribbs Causway, so if you're the sort of person to take your cinema going experience seriously maybe make the trip out there. Their prices aren't too bad (you can pay as little as £5.50 if you're a student), and they've driven down the cost of the Odeon, Bristol's other city centre cinema. Slightly worrying that they tell you the staff will be surveying you with night vision goggles to combat piracy, but I can live with it. read more

This is basically a showcase like all the other showcases in the world, but with the added bonus of a directors lounge for those of us who have money to burn. The directors lounge, despite what the name might suggest, isn't for film directors. It's basically for anybody who wants to sit in a slightly larger seat and listen to the couple next to them eat their dinner on a retractable table. You also get the pleasure of watching waiters and waitresses walk back and forward in front of you as they deliver somebody's over priced burger. As you can probably tell from my sarcastic tone, I'm not a fan of the directors lounge. In fact, despite working in the film industry, I'm not a fan of going to the cinema in general. I can't count the amount of times I've had to tell somebody to stop talking, plus why oh why do cinemas supply the noisiest food in the world (popcorn) to people walking into a place they are required to be quiet in? read more

The latest of Bristol's cinemas, Cinema de Lux came into being around the same time that Cabot Circus was born. Situated on the top floor, it means that you could actually - if you wanted - spend all day in this retail labyrinth, shifting from shopping to restaurant to cinema. I recal my first impression being "oh my god, this looks like the future!". Perhaps an exaggeration, but Cinema de Lux is indeed ultra-modern, ultra-chic and built with epic proportions in mind. If you want a dose of glossy Hollywood escapism, it is the perfect venue. Of course, that means when you don't - it isn't. I find the programme restricted indeed and unless it's trash your after it's on occasion difficult to even find one film worth watching. It's the best place to catch the latest blockbuster in an atmosphere of relative opulence. You can even sit yourself in the luxurious - and more expensive - 'director's hall' if you feel so inclinded. read more

As cinemas go, this is one of the nicest you'll visit, mainly because it's comfortable, well specced (in terms of screen and audio quality) and has the added bonus of incorporating a 'Director's Lounge' and a small restaurant. It's also fairly clean and well maintained, which is unusual for a cinema these days, as they seem mostly run by young people with low hygiene standards. The only thing that stops this Showcase from full marks is the price of admission and the price of food. They're ridiculous! Be sure to sign up for the 'Insider' card, which is free, and which you'll be able to use for reduced admission on Sunday evenings and all day Monday and Tuesday. read more

Perched atop the shiny new Cabot Circus we were promised a new town centre cinema - ooooooooh we all all went. But it turned out to be just another Showcase cinema showing all the same films as the other 25 million cinemas in Bristol but with the added annoyance of the all-american The Insider advert at the beginning. It does have the words 'de Lux' after it (which I have to point out is misspelt, you think they would have checked that) which, as far as I can tell, means that it takes up a lot more space than any other cinema and is entirely decorated as a 1970s hotel. You walk into a vast ticket desk area with a couple of self-service machines. I highly recommend using these as the staff are like rabbits in headlights. Having seen a couple of 3D films here I haven't paid the same price twice for the ticket and the (splutter) extra charge to hire the filthy 3D glasses. You then walk past the bank of snackfood and, for some reason, a Studio One restaurant (yes, I really want to eat expensive food in a lobby overlooking a popcorn stand), get your ticket checked and then go find your screen. Again the lobbies are vast for the 13 screens over two floors, and so is each screen. It does mean you do have nice big seats with a decent amount of legroom for those over six foot. So it is OK for the blockbusters, it probably never gets full (which means will it survive?) and is £6.15 a ticket which is average in Bristol. They do take Orange Wednesdays. read more

Showcase Cinema De Lux is located inside the shopping complex of Cabot Circus in the centre of Bristol. It is a very new and plush cinema, and I do think that the design inside and the general atmosphere is a lot nicer than most cinemas I have been to. The food on sale is expensive (as you'd expect from a cinema) however they do a much bigger selection of food than I have seen in any cinema. For example they do proper meals (burger and chips, hot dogs deals etc) rather than a pathetic portion of nachos or popcorn. And these cost about £4-5 which isn't that bad as you'd struggle to find a meal in Burger King for that price nowadays. The cinemas all have really big screens, and the rows of seats are staggered so that you can always see all of the screen even if a giant sits in front of you (especially if you are slightly on the short side like me!). In addition, the seats can (partially) recline. Well, they don't really recline, they just lean back a bit if you apply pressure to the floor with your feet. However, if again you are on the short side you might find that you can't reach the floor as successfully as someone of a taller nature, therefore you end up rocking yourself backwards and forwards which makes me veeery sleepy! The staff are all very professional and efficient, and it feels as if you have paid a lot more than £5.50 (student) for a film. They also accept Orange Wednesday, but a word of warning - the cinema does get very busy and there is only about 4 people on the tills, so get there way in advance if you are planning on seeing a new release on a Wednesday evening. read more

A trip to the cinema to me is a treat I save for special films. The advent of 3d brought me to this cinema to see Avatar, having realised I was never going to make it to the Imax to see it. The cinema itself is very luxurious, its gone for swish and it pulls it off. The seats are wonderfully comfortable, a nice treat for a cinema experience where you can feel you have about as much room as on an airline! Definitely a treat watching a film here. If I wanted to watch a big blockbuster 3D extravaganza, I'd definitely choose to do it here if I couldn't see it in Imax. Best of the big name cinemas in Bristol if you want the glitz of the big screen. I came here on a Wednesday and was very glad we had pre-purchased our tickets as there was a queue coming out the door. Queues for food are relatively short but it may be that's because people had the foresight to bring their own sweets, its not cheap buying food here and the prices of the restaurant in the cinema is enough to make you exclaim in a high pitched voice. read more

There was a huge amount of hype surrounding the opening of Calbots luxury cinema. I heard all sorts of rumours about what was on offer. Some of them were just rumours, and the rest you just need to buy a more expensive ticket. The cinema is very swanky and has the feel of a wine bar that has been funded by an airport, with a budget that went out the window. The low lit corridors lead you to large screening rooms that have big comfortable seats that show all the latest hollywood releases. I have a personal hate of the chairs, which are meant to be reclining but all theydo is bounce you forward if you lean back in them. They also have a special red carpet room where you can order food and drink from your seat as you watch the film. What can i say it is a cinema! read more

For me personally, of all the things that Cabot Circus brought to Bristol when it opened, Showcase De Lux is the best. Finally digital quality screens in Bristol! Screens this quality are almost compulsory in every cinema in the US, we are obviously somewhat behind. It's the usual story with this cinema, food and drink, and snacks are pretty pricey, but find me a cinema where they aren't and I'll call you a liar. A nice addition though is the bar, in the main area of the lobby, perfect if, like me, you find films just that little bit more entertaining after a few rum and cokes. Just be careful not to fall asleep in their amazing chairs, they are the best cinema chairs I have ever sat in. Like huge lounge chairs, with headrests and big arms. They even tip back as you lean into them. The daytime ticket prices are cheaper too, which is perfect if you just want to catch a film by yourself. And even though there are some funny rumours flying around about this cinema, I haven't found them to be true and I am very grateful that's it's here. read more

Before this new cinema complex arrived a couple of years ago there really was no decent place to go in Bristol - the Odeon in Broadmead is just so small and not great for the full cinema experience. Showcase cinema is massive - with several huge screens - even the smaller screens are still big and provide a good experience! The best thing about it is the seats - all seats have are made from comfy leather, and they are free standing with headrests and arm rests. They even have a drinks slot on the arm which comes in handy! On a more negative note, the food and drinks here are ridiculously pricy - but then again, this pretty much goes for every cinema chain across the country! Still though, I think it's a shame they charge so much. I would always recommend popping to the nearest corner shop or tescos beforehand, you can get popcorn for a third of the price. One thing that's great about this cinema opening is the price cut that Odeon have had to put in place to compete - and students can now go here for only £3.75, so if you're on a budget and can't afford showcase then go along to this! read more

Ultimately Bristol's largest and most luxurious cinema, the Showcase Cinema de Lux in Cabot Circus is one of only a handful in the country. Obviously modern cinemas are great for more leg room, comfier seats and plenty of screens, but the thing that makes this cinema worth visiting is it's 3D screen and Directors Lounge. The digital projector used in Screen 4 means we get the pleasure of watching Avatar etc in 3D, which is becoming more and more the norm in film making these days. The Directors Lounge is usually very pricey, at around £11 per ticket, but my partner went on a day when it happened to be half price so we enjoyed very comfortable leather seats, arranged in pairs, and the offer of table service throughout the movie, should we want it. The Directors Lounge operates on a strict 18 and over age policy and with a private licensed bar and seating area it is a great place to impress on a date. In theory this age restriction should result in less popcorn throwing and 'Hello? I'm in the cinema' Dom Jolly style jokes... read more

Okay its pricey, okay the food and snacks are a MASSIVE rip off but you can't fault its comfy seats and the directors lounge takes cinema comfort to a whole new level! The other great thing about cinema de lux is they screen theatre productions. This might seem like an odd idea, but if you enjoy the theatre then its a great way to see a big London production without the cost and travel. I saw the curious incident of the dog in the night time and not only was this a great production but seeing it at the cinema gave you views that not even the front rowers could enjoy! read more

This should've been a fantastic cinema experience. The building is excellent, lots of space, an interesting architecture, it should be a great space to see films- but actually watching a film here is really disappointing (no matter what film you're watching). The seats are 'floating' seats, which basically means they're wobbly and it also means that if the person behind you nudges your seat with their foot, you feel it- EVERY time. It's incredibly distracting and totally spoils the film-watching experience. Seating is reserved by number, which seems like a good idea until you see people in the row in front being shown to their seats by a staff member with a torchlight, so you can't see the film that's already started. I was unlucky enough to also be sat next to the most annoying couple I've ever heard in a cinema, who loudly asked each other the most stupid questions (why is it exploding?) throughout the film. I know that's not the cinema's fault but it certainly didn't add to it. Cinema trips like that remind me why people get big TVs and buy DVDs. read more

Horrible Staff! Totally untrained people at the Box Office. They haven't got a clue, of what's even playing, leave aside, any suggestions or tip!! Just to get a movie booked, took us a straight 25 minutes! For Christ's sake! 25 minutes! Wait, there is more. There was a friend of ours, with a student ID! Now this girl, with no knowledge of her job, calls upon her Supervisor. A very grumpy lady, dressed in an elegant Pink shiny shirt arrives. And? She asks for the Bank Card????? Passport???? Driving Licence????? Are this people OK??? The Management has for sure, lost it! Obviously, she wasn't carrying an ID, as she was not heading to any pub, but a movie. This Pink Supervisor, denies her the student discount and starts smiling sarcastically! Horrendous! The funny part? She is a regular at the cinemas with us on every Wednesdays and Thursdays !!! Think, won't be going back! God knows, just in the span of one week, what went wrong (?) Not,not at all, recommended!!! read more

The cinema de lux is a welcome step backwards in time from the gigantic multiplexes that the majority of todays cinemas have become. An impressive lobby, with plenty of friendly staff on hand, leads on to smaller, more cosy lobbies for each group of screens - so no more joining a massive queue for popcorn (which, incidently, is nice and fresh)! Unfortunately, as well as the best of the old, there are a couple of not-so-good points. Firstly, although the seating is tiered so that the man with the huge head isn't blocking your view, the screen isnormal. What's wrong with that, I hear you say? Well, after the last few years of huge screens that literally required some head movement, even a screen on the larger end of normal just leaves you un-satisfied. You know that, like the giant tub of popcorn in your lap, you shouldn't really need it and yet you have to have it! The other minor contention is the seats - it's just an opinion, but I find them annoying. They're floating, ie as you sit down the seat opens up, and you are able to tilt forward and back. Whilst this allows you to find the perfect position, you have to work through the whole movie to stay that way - which is just a nusance! On the whole, I thought this was a great cinema, and not hugely over-priced for today either (if you're a student anyway - £5.50 hehe :P). The staff were brilliant - it's been a long time since I've been to a cinema and felt like a valued customer rather than muck to be shifted around. A friend and I decided to see the new James Bond film and opted for the new cinema in Cabot Circus. We were able to go early enough to see a matinee, so tickets were reasonable and we both were surprised to be able to pick our seats! The lobby is lovely and there is a bar off to one side in an enclosed area. Food & drink are available on both levels so you don't have a trek to get something. Our cinema was on the upper level which has both a lift and escalator available. We were led to the cinema by a young lady and were happy to have a rocking seat, leg room, no sight blockage and a nice screen and sound system. I hope to return soon and maybe take advantage of the Director's Lounge which seems to be worth the extra cost. We had no parking cost complaints since we took the bus, but maybe the theatre should offer a reduced parking option for patrons. I was pleasantly surprised and hope to see more films there in the future. read more

Today was the first time I've been to the cinema for 15 years due to chronic pain from sitting for long periods. However, I was desperate to see T2: trainspotting! My brother booked tickets for the Directors lounge and assured me I would be completely comfortable! He was right! I had a brilliant time and I realised just how much I've missed going to the cinema! All the staff were polite and friendly and I loved the complementary drink and popcorn! I will always use the directors lounge and start visiting the cinema more often! read more

The recently opened Showcase Cinema de Lux in Cabot Circus is a refreshing change to the other cinemas around Bristol. The reception is reminiscent of a 5 star hotel, with plenty of staff to sell tickets, serving food and drinks and to show you the way. There is a wide selection of snacks and drinks, and a restaurant serving a good choice of food. Tickets are for allocated seats, so there was no mad rush to get seated together. Adult tickets cost £7.25, children and Senior Citizens costs £5.50. You can book online for an additional 60p per ticket and select the seats you want in advance. You can also print off your tickets at home, so no panicking when you get to the Cinema to find you have left behind the card that you used to buy them. We were shown to our seats by a man with a torch. I found the seats were incredibly uncomfortable. They are on a 'rocker' so you need to keep your feet on the ground to prevent being pushed forward. As I have a disability that affects my legs, this meant that after ten minutes my legs were aching and my back pushed into an uncomfortable position. My 11 year old daughter faired worse as she is not heavy enough to push the back of the chair into a comfortable position, nor do her legs reach the floor! We were pleased that we weren't subjected to lots of advertisements prior to the film starting - and it would be nice if it stayed that way. Cinema de Lux also offers the Directors Lounge - you enter a plush lounge where you can enjoy a drink before and after the film. You can order food and drink to take in with you and enjoy the film in extra wide seats with moveable armrests. The tickets for the Directors Lounge don't come cheap at £10, but what a lovely treat for a birthday or special occassion. Overall, we enjoyed the experience and will be going back. The only disadvantage would be that you have to pay for parking on top of the cost of the cinema tickets. This isn't too bad if you are there in the evening, but during the day, the parking costs are higher and going to watch a film for a couple of hours could seriously dent your car parking budget! read more

Showcase Cinema de Lux is an outstanding cinema located within the newly built Cabot Circus shopping centre. The cinema is embedded between an array of upmarket and high street shops, and is easy to locate from outside Cabot Circus and within Cabot Circus itself. The interior design is of a high standard, and adds to the cinematic experience. There is a customer service desk within the cinema for any queries, and the usual snacks await your pick. The seating reclines, with cushioned padding to provide comfortable sitting. Although this cinema does not always have every latest releases, the interiors and comfort factor really puts this cinema at the top of my list for cinematic experiences. read more

If you don't mind seeing a movie on Sunday to Tuesday the Insider membership makes it averagely priced, its a bit pricey for drinks and snacks but has mega comfy seats and the X plus screen is the best for 3D movies. Without the Insider deal it's the most expensive cinema in the center but its luxurious and the higher ticket price was expected due to the name (de lux) . I'd recommend it if you treat going to the cinema as an experience rather than just to watch a movie. read more

As long as you don't drive there, Showcase de Lux is a decent cinema that rivals its closest (Odeon) in terms of cost and screen size. Saying that, its screen is a normal size, unlike vue, which is a huge disappointment since there are 13 screens and such huge room in the lobby in the seating area outside the lobby they squeezed screen size for it. The seats are comfortable and the springy idea isn't too bad and you forget about them if you are into the film. If you are not enjoying the film, you begin to take notice of the odd squeaking and also the struggle to maintain them at a comfortable tilt. The legroom is good though, so you don't accidentally kick the chair in front. Director's lounge seatings are much better, and its worth the extra cost if money isn't the issue. I don't have much to say about the bars downstairs and upstairs though. I must add that the toilets are pretty nice for a cinema and the food is fresh but overpriced, which is the same for all cinemas. The glass windows are huge and allows plenty of light in but there isn't much of a view I'm afraid. Bad experience for me when a small group of us visited, where we were shown into the screen and then a while later (still during the adverts) a member of staff came into the screen to find us and asked us to show her our tickets - which I found rude, not by her (the staff are all friendly), but that someone further up instructed her to check up on us. read more

There's terrible light pollution in some screens at certain times of day with light reflecting off the spectrum building and streaming through the doors onto the screen. I don't care how comfy the seats are if I can't see anything on the left fifth of the screen. read more

It's a wonder that the nearby Odeon has managed to stay open since Cinema de Lux emerged on te scene. Situated on the third floor of the marvellous Cabot Circus shopping centre it is hard to believe that there is enough room for more than one cinema screen (what with all the shops and restaurants). But there is and I have to say, having worked in a couple of cinemas myself, this is by far the best in terms of modern comfort, value for money, selection of films etc. The 'standard' seats are fabulous. In fact, were this not Cinema de Lux (such an apt name), then you'd probably feel quite naughty sat in these seats - like you'd snuck in the premier seats even though you only paid for a standard ticket. They rock back and forwards - truly amazing. However, Cinema de Lux does have premier seats for the odd showing in the Director's Hall. These are a few quid more expensive than the normal tickets so I've never been to one but seriously, they must be the Ritz of cinema seats. read more

Most of the bigger cinemas in Bristol are fairly shabby and seedy so I was super excited when Cinema de Lux opened up as it is only a short power walk from my house. The planners have done their utmost to make it grand and imposing and it does take up a huge swathe of the Cabot Circus development. But somehow it avoids having that soulless feel of most big screen places. And there is a great little bar just inside the foyer which does reasonably priced cocktails so if you fancy getting a little addled before a film or have messed up your show times it's well worth a visit. The decor is sort of glam Japanese and the screens themselves are a total treat, especially when you compare them with Cribb's Causeway or the Showcase at St Phillips. For an old crock with a bad back like me, who also has a giant for a husband, the seats are mega-comfortable, bouncy with lots of leg room. The size of the screens is also just right, considering how many they have managed to fit into the development. I have never done the swanky director's seat deal but I hope to some day. read more

Though this cinema is new and nicely decorated, I don't personally feel that it lives up to all the expectations raised by its advertising. The large number of screens means that they show a wide variety of films, and the seats are very comfortable. However, the prices are outrageously high, both for tickets and for popcorn and drinks. Also, there never seem to be more than a few staff working at any one time, no matter how busy it is, so at the peak of the evening, you will be left standing in agonisingly long queues for the one or two open ticket counters or popcorn tills, whilst a whole row of un-manned ones lie frustratingly dormant. The lobby also includes a little bar and restaurant, and while I can understand the attraction of a couple of drinks before a film, I find it difficult to imagine wanting to eat a meal there as it is very exposed and noisy when the lobby is busy. The director's hall is a nice idea, but it is too highly priced to be worth it for the very small difference in the film experience. For me, the worst disappointment in this otherwise fairly pleasant cinema is the soundproofing. They have not done enough to insulate the cinema against the busy road outside, and those with good hearing will find the distant rumble infuriating during quiet, atmospheric moments in a film. read more

The cinema boasts 13 screen showing all the latest movies at what is probably a competitive rate for a cinema this size. You can also join their Card scheme to get advance information and other perks. On a quirkier note, I still haven't gotten used to the staff making the announcement before each movie that they will be surveying the viewers with night vision goggles in an effort to combat piracy. Then again, that's a small price to pay for a cinema that serves hot cheese and chips! read more

The Directors Hall is a real treat, the seats are so comfy and roomy that I couldn't believe it when the film finished, it just flew by. We took a bottle of wine in with us and had a sweet bento box which, although a little overpriced at £6.99 was deliciously packed with chocolate fudge cake, bits of cadburys flake, jelly beans, jelly babies, sherbert flying saucers and sweet popcorn. My only complaint was that we seemed to get the bottom of a bad batch of popcorn with loads of unpopped corn and crumbs rather than whole bits of popcorn. It did get a little chilly towards the end of the film but with my jacket over my knees and glass of red in hand I was otherwise very happy. read more

Last night I was at odds with nothing to do, being a lonely girl in a new city I felt the dark anonymity of a cinema might distract me from myself for a few hours. 9.20pm was late to decide on such a venture, however from last weeks failed efforts at watching Coco avant Chanel - I knew of one venue that would be playing it, albeit with a hefty price tag, £12.25 to be precise. Such indulgences are usually not fulfilled, however, now and then a girl just has to throw caution (and their job seekers allowance) to the wind. So what did I actually get for my £12.25 - I re-confirm the price as I've never paid that much to watch a film, actually tell a lie, I have it was for the open air cinema at Somerset House set in the grounds of a majestic courtyard witness to one-off screenings that take months of licensing and preparation. Needless to say this was a constant charge designed to pull in revenue over a prolonged period of time. Anyway I digress - for my £12.25 (third and final mention) I received an extra large and somewhat squeaky slightly recline-able (what I believe to be leather - no vegans allowed) armchair, with a side table and the honor of purchasing a reasonably priced drink (from a dedicated bar) to furnish it with. Luxury holds no bounds. So luxurious in fact that surrounded by 10 others in a screen with a capacity on 200, we were greeted by a permanent choir of fart noises as the leather creaked and squirmed throughout the film. Needless to say I enjoyed the empty cinema and the little tray for my drink, however my thoughts upon entering the film remained unchanged. Had I been granted the option to watch the 'French speaking' film in anywhere other than the director's lounge I would have gladly taken it and saved my meagre recession based budget. Upon reflection the Cinema de Lux Director's Lounge is a great place to go for a date or a regular outing if money is no object plus their is the additional straight from the car park into the cinema convenience that a larger 'plex' has to offer, next stop (at the other end of the cinema spectrum) is the cube. read more

Impossible to find out what on in the Directors Hall on sunday (its friday). Phone line is 10p per minute but cant answer questions and not possible to talk to a real person.
