I have two experiences to share visiting this hospital. The first was going to emergency with my…read moredad. The second was more recent getting my mom here for an endoscopy appointment. This hospital used to be called Scarborough Grace. If I'm not mistaken, Scarborough Grace Hospital used to be owned by the Salvation Army. I'm guessing that Salvation Army relinquished whatever ownership agreement that it had. Its formal name is The Scarborough Hospital - Birchmount Campus. It's a part of the Scarborough Health Network, which comprises this hospital, Centenary on Ellesmere at Neilson, and General on Lawrence Avenue East at McCowan. My first visit was during Easter Sunday several years ago. I was roasting a turkey. My dad got a nose bleed. It didn't stop after twenty minutes. We were concerned. My car was fairly new. I drove him over to this hospital that was called Grace back then. My dad was extremely careful to not get blood in my new car. It didn't matter to me. That car had upholstery protection. We never got to fully check it out. We checked in to emergency triage. It helped that my dad had a nosebleed that didn't seem to stop. We got him in to a room fast. A doctor saw him. He had his nose packed with a long ribbon that looked painful. It did stop my dad's nosebleed. My dad and I are similar with nosebleeds. We need a humidifier to keep nosebleeds away. We learned a lot that day. We both haven't had a nosebleed event in years. Last Wednesday, we made it a family affair to get my mom to this hospital for her endoscopy appointment. I offered to drive my dad's car to get us all there. When you enter the parking lot, short-term parking is on the left. It's pricy. Long-term parking is more reasonable. The maximum rate is $20, which isn't horrible. I took a ticket from the machine. The gate arm came up. I backed into a spot. We all got out of the vehicle and headed over to the admitting side for outpatients. It felt less stressful. My dad felt at east having me, so he could focus on making sure my mom was okay. I found patient registration. We are all happy waiting there for a human until a female woman whisked us over to the patient check-in kiosks. I have a love-hate relationship with said kiosks. They work well if you fit the typical use case with no exceptions. I liked that I could scan my mom's health card. When I got to the end of this check-in process, I got an error that it couldn't check my mom in. That's the hate part. The same woman came over to try and whisk us back to the kiosks. I said that I did the check-in process and it didn't work. It said that I needed a human. She helped us. It turns out that my mom got a new health card with a different two-letter set at the end of her card number. This woman corrected it. She also put me down as an emergency contact. She was great helping us get to where we needed to be. When you walk into this hospital, you are automatically on the second floor. We needed to walk down the hallway, turn right, see the Outpatient sign, and turn right. The instructions were accurate. We got her to the endoscopy clinic. The woman there was extremely nice. I had to fill out a questionnaire on behalf of my mom. My dad was relieved that he didn't have to do it. It was a two-sider. My dad had brought a printout of my mom's medication, so that saved me some writing. The woman entered all information that we gave her. She then led us over to the endoscopy unit where we waited outside. It didn't take long for my mom to get called in. The unit was small. We got her changed into a gown and onto the bed. We put a blanket over her because gowns are thin and my mom gets cold easily. My dad stayed with her in the unit. I waited outside. They put her to sleep. Both my dad and I watched her get moved into a different room for the endoscopy. We both waited outside. We got there at noon. Her appointment was for 1:30 pm. She went in for her appointment at 1:40 pm. The time estimates were on track. We saw the nurses roll my mom back to the unit. She was hooked up to a vitals monitor. She was doing great. It took her a bit of time to wake up. She was in good spirits. Endoscopy results were immediate. Everything checked out fine. We were all pleased. My mom changed out of the gown and into her regular clothes. The nurses were great giving us a bag to store her clothing. The nurses were friendly and made our experience less stressful that it could have been. My dad didn't know how to get out from this ward. Thankfully, I am better with directions. Two lefts and we were headed out the door. I paid for parking in the lobby. My dad was fascinated by this payment kiosk. I paid with a credit card before he had a chance to pay. He asked how he could pay with cash. I showed him. By the time he had his answer, there were four people behind us. Oops! We walked to the car. I inserted my paid ticket to leave the lot. My mom got the best care here. (88)

The whole process was easy to follow even as a first time donor. Check in with the receptionist - touchscreen screening Qs - go into a room with one of the staff for other Qs and hemoglobin test - if all is good, you will be led to a chair and have your veins checked - give blood - rest and snack to recover - be on your way. Whole thing took about an hour (giving blood was ~10min ish). When they checked, they worried my veins might be too small (apparently a common issue for smaller Asian women?) but Marisol was able to get in, no issue! I will be back :)

The check-in process is very smooth and quick. There is a required questionnaire with each visit... better safe than sorry. I came for the plasma donation and was informed it would be appropriately 45 minutes for the entire process and if I would like to use the washroom first and pickup any snacks to nibble on/ drink The process was painless and they came to check in on me multiple times... maybe I looked pale and scared I would faint? I booked my next plasma donation as I was exiting for the following week and look forward to the next visit

The reception told me that it's $20 for with reading for each step. I even repeated on the phone if "$20 including reading?" She said yes! Other locations are $30 for each step. I need the 2-Step test so a $40 payment for work sounds good to me instead of $60. I come in, it was busy so reception told me it will be about 40mins wait (which is probably longer anyway) so to come around 1:30pm since I had my baby with me. So I did. I waited an hour for the dr anyway... how convenient to be seen for not even 5mins. 3 days later I come in but only waited 10mins (so nice even though my baby wasn't with me this time). I was seen for 5mins again to do the reading and the Dr (a different one) told me that I had to pay $40. I told him what I was told over the phone and he apologized. Said that it's $20 for the injection, then $20 for reading since it's usually different Drs each time. I could've just went to a different location.. How could they mess this up? I do like how they have pillows in all their rooms and the sliding doors.

Thank you CubaHeals, Doctors, Nurses, Staff, Researchers - you have given us hope!…read more My mom, Judy, was diagnosed with Lung Cancer July 15, 2016. It was a devastating blow, one far too many people have to endure. Following surgery on September 30th to remove the tumor, we learned it was non-small cell lung cancer. Chemotherapy began in late November. Chemo was very hard on mom, and she decided she could not continue. A body scan late December confirmed the cancer had spread to her hip bone, it was stage 4. When mom declined further Chemo, her Oncologist advised she had less than one year to live. This of course broke our hearts. Mom went through radiation on her hip - but declined further Chemotherapy due to the painful side effects. She was given less than 12 months to live. Dad refused to believe there were not other solutions - and undertook an extensive investigation. He was lucky to find CubaHeals. We were thrilled to learn she would be a candidate for CimeVax Vaccine. Mom, dad and my sister travelled to La Pradera, Cuba in March, 2017. It was one of the best experiences of their lives. They were treated like family, with love and genuine care. The team of doctors, nurses and staff took amazing care of them. Bonds were quickly formed. Following the week of treatment, they were sent home with Cimevax - and treatment continues. Late September mom had a lung scan and bone scan. Nerves were on high alert as we waited anxiously for results. Tears flowed freely when we learned her lungs were clear, the spot on her hip is smaller, and the cancer has not spread. Amazing news! UPDATE: mom had an X-ray last week - and lungs are still clear!!! You have given us hope and an opportunity to celebrate life! More people need to know about what you do - we need to tell your story louder! You change people's outcomes, provide hope when there is little to none. We are so grateful for what you do! Thank you
