My friend from Australia was over recently and we had just done the Mt Eden Volcano climb, we headed down and into Mt Eden shopping district for lunch, on the way we popped into this pharmacy as my friend needed to buy deodorant (she had hers confiscated at the airport, remember no bigger than 90g! Or whatever it is!). She looked at several and then upon choosing came up to me -"is this normal?!"; it was under $10, but not by much. She has lived in several places around the world including Sydney and isn't fussed by money, but even she was shocked at basic items such as deodorant being so expensive in Auckland. I explained that Mt Eden is also a 'well-to-do' suburb so perhaps they were just that bit more pricey here as well.

While it is easy to walk past this store with out paying any real attention to it, inside you can find some great treats. There are plenty of lighters, ash trays and smoking "accessories", even including a small selection of corncob pipes (though you can't get the pipe tobacco there). Now and Then also has some tacky but great macabre gifts, like skeletal ashtrays and skull statuettes. Incense pipes and paraphernalia, this is what we use to have instead of places like the brightly lit Cosmic Corner. This friendly store comes complete with Bob Marley T-shirts and ceramic dragons.

Plus crazy clothing, outrageously funky eye wear. Some select sounds, posters, stickers, lighters, jewellery and accessories. I managed to find a daring pair of glasses and a snappy wild things t shirt on one visit. Although slightly dreamy the staff are helpful and dish out free advice (and stickers) on what is undoubtedly a subjective experience. They also do ticket sales to many mainstream and alternative gigs and festivals happening across New Zealand which is super helpful, and you can access this service online also. We normally cruise to the market to get the flowers we need, but when time is limited, then we head to Takapuna's premier florist and flower wholesaler. Their stock is limited, but there is normally enough to create a masterpiece that will bring tears to the eyes of the recipient. I like to tag along, as they can make up bunches to order, and for a guy on the move, I'm always using the visits as a good excuse to get gifts for all the staff who've done me favours in recent days. So our visit is a win win situation. The staff are helpful and friendly, and the shop is easy to access from the motorway, plus there is always parking right in front.

The staff here are friendly and seem to have an idea of the very specific way that true stationery officianados need to revisit each item in the shop about twelve times per visit, as they make their mental lists of which pencil is cuter, which noteboook is the ideal size, which illustration best sums them up as a person. I'm not being mean! It takes one to know one. The only thing I would advise against at Kikki K is asking for too much assistance. I made that mistake and it kind of just made a hard decision harder, with all the options the sales assistant showed me.

I would also recommend this place for any hair dye addicts as they stock palty, liese prettia, freshlight, beautylabo, shakin' puddin' and more, and the staff actually know their stuff about the colour accuracy and lasting power of each type! The shop assistants are very attentive and friendly - they will give you advice if you ask, but are also happy to let you browse without pressure if you say you are just looking around.
