Progress was slow, and after almost 3 months, I still had not restored full range of motion. I needed to make some change to my therapy, so I was eager to see Arlene. Arlene provided me with treatment that drastically changed the trajectory of my recovery. Unlike my previous therapists, she did not only focus on my elbow. Instead, she was able to detect tension in my shoulders and chest as well, and her treatment covered all the areas affected by my injury. After just one treatment, I improved significantly. Due to the progess I saw, I also had a renewed motivation to do the exercises that I previously dreaded. Arlene is patient, skilled, knowledgeable, gentle, compassionate, and professional. Since his retirement, I've been treated by several care providers (all very good!), until finding Calyx and can only say they are the best! Integrating multiple whole-body and mind modalities, they are highly skilled in pelvic pain treatment and, importantly, they are compassionately attuned, caring and responsive to the patient experience. They are not only highly skilled in their professions but are caring and patient and - together with their staff - create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. When I first went to see them, I had a terrible problem that prevented me from using my arm normally and doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong or what had caused it. I feel like Karen saved me. A few years later, I hurt my foot and could barely walk on it without pain. As an avid hiker and walker this was a nightmare. I went to a podiatrist who wasn't helpful at all. I went to see Brenda and she explained what was going on in detail (something I couldn't get from the podiatrist), and was able to calm the injury through direct treatment and exercises and eventually prescribed custom orthotics and restored my ability to hike again. Through some of the worst of the above I was also suffering from financial hardship and Karen & Brenda made some generous concessions to help me. She works on fascia (connective tissue in your body - a newer aspect of physical therapy. I can't explain it as well as she can!) so I get a different perspective on my aches and pains. She's continuously educating herself by going to conferences and classes to learn more about treating the fascia. She's also constantly teaching me (more ergonomic computer set up, how to sit better, how to bike better), as lifestyle makes a big difference and she can only do so much even if you're seeing her twice a week. And when I run late or when she ends up spending time teaching me something new, she always spends extra time to work on my sore spots (definitely more time than I'm scheduled for!). I am also a Pilates instructor of 18 years specializing in hypermobile people and rehab post physical therapy. Front desk dosnt say hello. Not once in three in office visits. My personal pet peeve. She is deeply uninterested in the customer service side of her job. Sets a tone of "we don't give a crap that you're here" as soon as you walk in. The first person I saw could not explain to me what he wanted in a way I could Understand. He gave me a whole book of an exercise protocol but not which exercises to do or how to do them as he would like. I was lost a demoralized and my body felt worse. Then I saw someone who may have been one of the higher up pt people in the practice. She sat in the waiting room training the new front desk girl and complaining about how bored she was until my session started. she accompanied what I assume to be a newer pt into my session. She then explained to me basic postural principles until I stopped her and told her she was wasting my time because as I mentioned before, I'm a Pilates instructor. This visit was a bit better. But not by much. I at least got a couple exercises they wanted me to do and I think I understood how to do them. The next time I came in, no bored pt. Just the new pt. And she proceeded to suggest all the exercises I'm already doing that aren't helping. And then she did some muscle activation work that I still couldnt really feel. At one point I asked her why we were squeezing a ball and she said for your pelvic. When I asked, My pelvic what? She was unable to tell me what she thought the exercise was doing aside from bringing to pelvis to neutral. This dosnt make a ton of sense to me. So I asked for more. She didn't have it. Her inability to articulate the goal of the exercise to me worried me enough not to come back. I had really high hopes for this place. I tried to communicate that I needed their eye on my form because I can't tell what I'm doing wrong. I don't know if the believed me because I had to work very hard to get them to tell me wha they saw in my muscle engagement or alignment. I felt unheard and unwelcome for each and every one of my four visits.

Six months into my recovery I suddenly experienced severe pain in my posterior hip and sciatica. The surgeon imaged my hip but couldn't find anything wrong. The pain was so terrible I could barely walk two blocks and started using trekking poles to get around. For a year and half, I went through extensive physical therapy and rehab, which did help, but I never was able to regain full strength in my leg. And it wouldn't take much to put me in excruciating pain which would leave me limping for days. Going to Avid Sports Medicine and getting treatment from Dr. Cupit was literally a life changing experience for me. It was the first time I felt like someone was invested my recovery. After six weeks of shockwave therapy, I was able to move in ways I didn't think were going to be possible again.
