En route to town, I dropped in my solid favourite heels to be fixed up, and was greeted by the ever friendly and welcoming guys that man the shop. I'm sure one of them must be Steve, and one day I might venture to ask which one, but on this occasion I wasn't so brave as to make introductions. It costs just over a fiver to get re-heeling done, and I've never been in without being able to collect the shoes about 30 minutes later. Basically, it gives you enough time to pop off for a coffee, take in the world, and pop back again before going about your day. Of course, if you need keys cut, and the various other cobbler odd jobs, they're ready to provide good service for that too. They're always smiling, they're cheap and cheerful, they're fantastic and I've them to thank for not having to buy new shoes. It's always a pleasure. Cash only, but as Hannah says, there's a cash machine right next door!

The keycutting services are as fast as they are cheap (very) and on the two occasions I've needed a key cut here, I've had no problems with the finished product working in my doors. Can't say I've ever needed to have a shoe cobbled though. I'm a firm believer in the if-a-shoe's-broke-bin-it school of thought, so I can't comment on Steve's shoe skills, but I'd wager they're as professional as his key-cutting skills are.

Before I knew it we were discussing the ins and outs of suede and leather care with the lovely chap inside. He explained that for leathers it was a simple case of protecting with polish, but suede on the other hand was another issue. He in fact said he could end up selling us fifty pounds worth of care products, all of which we'd use fully, just to protect our shoes. So, an expensive thing to look after it seems! Nonetheless we simply made a purchase of some hardy looking suede protector spray and ended up having a lovely bit of banter in the meantime. As I looked around at the array of different items this place has on sale I was reminded just what a jack of all trades this cute little shop is. Need some make up? Plenty of cheap basket items check. Need a keyring? Check. Shoe care items? Check. And so on. A really handy shop with a lovely bloke to help you out!

So, I have been saving up many pairs of shoes to re-heel all at once and decided to revisit Bob's…read moreto get them all done at once. I nipped in to Chapel A and went on in, explaining that three needed re-heeling and my boots desperately needed some kind of rubber bottom to the heel as the plastic was proving lethal in the wet weather. (Yes, summer seems to be officially over in Leeds with nary an hour of decent sunlight in the last week or so... ) The chap asked if I wanted them doing today, which I did, so he said he needn't bother with a ticket. Since I was getting four pairs done at once he decided to do all four for for only £20, where usually the individual pairs are a £6.50, which I thought was marvellous! I handed him my bundle of shoes and spent a lovely hour or so mooching in Chapel A and enjoying a coffee at Zed before heading back to see how he'd done. He showed me my newly re-heeled shoes and all three pairs seemed as good as new, it still amazes me what a new lease of life simply re-heeling can do for my favourite pairs of shoes, and he'd even polished up my boots with their new safety-friendly rubber heel. Couldn't be happier with the service, lovely staff and great work. Win!

I stumbled across (excuse the pun) Shoetech! when passing through the Merrion Centre purely by…read morechance. A pair of tall boots bought for my girlfriend as a Christmas present were a little too tall for her diminutive frame and so I was looking to get around half an inch taken off the top. The shoemaker in question was quick to point out it was not an easy job, as they are machined leather throughout, but he would give it his best shot. However the resulting job was perfect, exactly as requested and very well finished and stitched. The price was only £15 and they were back within two days. I think the exclamation mark in their name is warranted after all.

You know that we all have different thresholds for high heels that are falling apart. Well mine…read moregoes pretty far. As long as my feet don't touch the ground and if I love the pair I will keep on wearing them (and there are even exceptions to this - so what if there's a hole in my favourite flats, I have tights on etc etc). The Village Cobbler is what you need when your black Zara peep toes are too bad for words, and you've already tried cellotaping them back together ... and you've got to get the train back to uni tomorrow. Oh, and could you just do them now? Thankyou thankyou thankyou. Obviously under normal circumstances there is a queue- a couple of days is usual. They cut keys here as well and sell all sorts of useful things like luggage etc. The only thing to defeat them was a small satchel bag that I completely murdered: my sister thought that she could salvage it (and thus take ownership of the poor thing). Alas, they needed the spring which I had carelessly dropped somewhere. Lesson learned. They are not miracle workers but they can fix and engrave most things.

One of my tasks was to reheel the many pairs of shoes that had, at that point, just failed. I couldn't bear to dump six pairs on one poor cobbler so I brought but two with me, to gauge how much it might cost at the very least, and decided I could do the rest at a later date. I nipped into Jim's and the bloke immediately understood the task at hand. Presumably they get a lot of trade like me - shoes, that is. He raised a kindly eyebrow and said "Ready in an hour love, that ok?" to which I replied "Perfect, thanks! How much will it be please?" and he said "'Bout a tenner!" How totally excellent. It was like getting two brand new pairs of shoes back, as it had been that long since I wore them last, and for only ten pounds. They were friendly, work was swift enough to shoot round town and do my bits, and it was lovely and cheap to boot. (Hah hah, get it? Yes, I know. It was awful...) Grand stuff!
