Called out Whitt roofing to get a quote to replace 15 linear feet of hip cap that was blown off…read morefrom the wind storm we experienced March 13th 2026. No other issues were observed with the roof. Materials were less the 100 dollars, there was no waste to dispose of so it was labor plus materials. i was sent a price of 1250 dollars. I asked for a break down of the price, which is a quote. Troy stated they don't break down their price. So I broke down the price. The repairs took less than 90 minutes with another company I hired. Add 60 minutes travel time you have 2.5 hours of labor. Hourly pay for experienced roofer 35.00. Add 20% for the employee work comp and taxes and you get a 42 dollar an hour labor rate. To be competative and profitable a business will add 25% to 50% premium to that rate to cover business expenses and profit. That gives us 63 dollars an hour. 63 x 2.5hours = 157.5 + 100.00 materials = 257.50. Instead, I got a labor rate of 418 dollars an hour. You heard that right. $418.00 an hour!

Salesperson would ignore texts for weeks. Vent cap on the side of my house came off, salesperson said it would be an easy for roofers to reinstall. Roofers said they couldn't for liability reason so I still gaping hole on the side of my house 28 feet high. (Anyone have a 30 foot ladder I could borrow for 5 minutes to put the cap on myself?)

But is the company reputable? And do you really want to go with a relatively new company even if is owned by your buddy. He decided, no. Newman is competitive with hundreds of 5 star reviews. He went with Newman. Subsequently we had a hail storm and neighbors were advising us to get our roof checked out. Our roof was 20 years old. I wanted to be honest with the insurance company and not submit a claim unless Tyler from Newman,who came out to give us an estimate, was sure we needed a new roof and we suffered damage beyond normal wear and tear. Plus we had 2 houses. Well one needed a new roof and the other one likely has another couple of years left. As an aside, if you turn in a claim to your insurance company, even if it is denied, you risk higher premiums or cancelation. That is why it is important to have Newman Roofing spend time assessing. In our case, our roof was more wear and tear with minimal hail. Dan and his guys were on time, even early. Weather has consistently been in the mid 90's. I was worried. But Newman keeps them well supplied with hydration. 14 man crew meant lots of vehicles, even a dump truck but they were minimally disruptive to our neighbors. Furniture moved, netting put up to minimize construction mess on house and garden areas. And then they went to work. All I can say is WOW. I am so pleased. When they were finished, the cleaned up all the mess, including using a magnetized thing for nails in driveway, patio and grass. The yard, the patio, the driveway, the porches are SPOTLESS. I highly highly highly recommend Newman Roofing. They did my kid's. They did this roof and in 2 years they will do our other roof. Price is good too.
