BBQ Beef Short Rib Bao
Anh D.

The food was overpriced and mediocre at best. The quality didn't come close to justifying the prices. The only somewhat decent dish was the ahi tuna dirty rice, but the protein-to-rice ratio was questionable, especially when a dirty rice plate already costs $9. The braised beef short rib bao buns ($12 for two) were overly sweet and had a mushy texture. The truffle gyoza (5 pieces) somehow arrived burnt on one side across every piece and were only mildly warm when served. Service was average overall. The indoor seating is nice, and being located in the heart of St. Pete gives the restaurant a great atmosphere. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the setting or the prices. I would not come back.

Indulgent, delicious food in St Petersburg! There's a storefront that you walk thru to get to the food truck in the back - a unique set up! Service was fast food came out within 10 mins! We got the chicken rice bowl, the lobster rangoons, and the wagyu pot stickers. Good amount of food to split between 2 people and everything was really good!! Outdoor & indoor seating - we sat out front to be in the sun but out back or inside looked pleasant too!

The portion sizes are massive! I ordered the chicken with the rice. I was literally holding like 2 pounds worth of food. They are very generous. The chicken was super crispy and juicy and the orange sauce was very savory. I think it was gochujang sauce. I'm a huge fan of white rice and they did not disappoint. It was very soft and had some flavor to it. Definitely coming back here again. The bao buns were pretty good too, but it was really hard for the chicken to stay in the bun so it kept slipping out. Overall, really cute place. A bit confusing because there's a food truck in the back and the back is actually the front entrance.

Super cool place near Fergs. Never knew this place was here. The Bang Bang Chicken with sticky rice was outstanding. Best sauce ever, chicken super crispy and cooked perfectly. Love the sticky rice with fried onions on top. Service was super quick and friendly!

We had been wanting to try Shiso Crispy for months and I'm sad to say the experience was extremely underwhelming. First off, the food is pretty pricy. The bao buns were 2 for $12 and the dirty rice with bang bang chicken was $18. Both dishes (and seemingly most of everything on the menu ) is covered in their gochujang sauce which after a while, is the only thing you can taste. There was no differentiation in flavors and the sweet sauce was just too much. The portion sizes were good but for over $30, there are much better options out there. The inside space was clean and comfortable and there is also seating outside in both the front and back. There is a small bathroom inside as well as branded gear for purchase.

Always enjoy Shiso Crispy. This is my first time eating at the Central Ave location. Food is a bit pricey but it NEVER disappoints.

Almost passed this up. When I first arrived, it was around 8:50. The restaurant appeared to be dead. There was no one inside. I was looking around and there's a sign on the window that says "entrance" and points towards the back. And then when you look inside the "restaurant" you see signs in the back that are above a door. When you go around or go through, there is a food truck out back. There's outdoor seating and indoor seating. The ambience is well lit outside! Unfortunately, they did not have the vegan bang bang chicken. Thankfully, they did have other vegetarian options (not sure if they're vegan so I'm not going to say vegan, but I believe it was). They had BBQ jackfruit rice bowl with slaw and then I also got the bao buns with BBQ jackfruit. I started with the rice bowl first. It was $19. Which is kinda pricey. Thankfully, the portion size matches up to the price point! With the amount of rice, it's technically more than one serving. I will say, this bowl was very very sweet. The BBQ jackfruit is sweet bc the BBQ sauce. And then they gave a sweet chili sauce on the side as well, so it was just more sweetness and unfortunately, nothing to combat the sweetness. It was good. I just wish it had some other sauce to help combat the sweetness! Then it would have been great. The bao buns were basically the same. That wasn't my intention but since they were out of the vegan bang bang, I didn't have a choice. So both of these options were essentially the same exact thing. Except one had rice and one had bao. Again, unfortunately it was too sweet and nothing to combat the sweetness. Both were good. My baos did stick the box and rip apart completely so it was very messy. Nonetheless, still good. I think these were $12?? I also appreciate that they're open later than 9, as for it seems everything else around the area closed at 9. Since I don't live in the area, I won't be able to try the other vegan option, but hopefully sometime if I'm in town, I can because it looks/sounds really good!

Shisho is always a good choice. Such large portions and amazing flavor with every bite. The bang bang chicken is just the right amount of heat. I love the crunch of the fried onions. Ordering ahead is always helpful.

Lobster Rangoon | 7/30/2023

Finally getting around to review the two items I got from the food truck at a special event they were at. Unfortunately, I was so disappointed. I ordered the SCHEZUAN MANDU and LOBSTER RANGOONS. The mandu was bland and came 5 pieces $12.50. A whole bag of frozen mandu could be purchased at any local asian market for half the cost and would have more flavor than that. The lobster rangoons were the biggest disappointment. When I cracked the first one open, all that was in there was cream cheese, no lobster - at least none that I could see or taste. Very unfortunate that these items didn't impress because their dirty rice looks really appetizing. I know they've just opened a new permanent location, but sadly I'm not sure I'd be rushing to try it out.

Bang Bang Chicken Dirty Rice and Garlic Chili Mandu

We were in the mood for some Asian or Asian Fusion type of a place in St Pete and Shio Crispy came up in the results. Here are my ratings: Quality of food: ok. We ordered the Bang Bang Chicken Dirty Rice and Garlic Chili Mandu. The Bang Bang chicken was extremely heavy on the sauce and tasted very sweet. Everything is glazed with sauces and after a while that's all you can taste. The Mandu was good but not very filling. Décor: just okay. The vibe of this place is that of a food truck hangout. There isn't much of a decor as you have to sit outside on some generic looking tables. Cleanliness: good. The tables and the general areas were being kept cleaned. Service: can be improved. With just a couple of people ahead of us, folks inside the food truck still looked overwhelmed. I stood at the cash register for 5 mins waiting for someone to take my order and I just gave up and ordered online. One shouldn't have to do that. Price: expensive. The bang bang chicken dish was $18 which should really be not more than $12. Shiso Crispy is a neat concept but not executed very well. The food is very heavy on the sauces and comes with a higher than expected price tag.

We did the sake pairing and i've never had such delicious sake before. It's a MUST!!! The service was so great & the food was just out of this world delicious. You can tell the quality of each dish is very high. The chef was telling us how he gets his fresh shipments in, and certain foods he prepared that's only available during this time of year. I was a little nervous that I'd still be hungry after dinner bc of the portions, but it was filling for me, and I usually can throw back on some food. Maybe it was the sake too, now that I think about it. Either way, each sake that we tried with the dishes were just so good. I also can't remember each dish's name or what it was. I just remember the taste of each, which was scrumptious. This place is now added to our date night rotation. Can't wait to go next time to see what the chef prepares, as the menu changes seasonally.

The voicemail asked to text them for same day reservations and Arte texted me back very quickly. He was super nice and asked if we had food allergies and managed to squeeze us in last minute. This whole restaurant is a omakase experience and form what I saw it's their traditional or nigiri omakase experience. This means the sushi chef prepares a variety of his choice of food directly in front of you. We were one of their earliest time slots right at opening which worked well because we had the place to ourself! All the seating is around the sushi bar, it is a small venue but a very traditional vibe of a sushi/omakase experience My wife and I have done a lot of traveling including to Japan and we absolutely love these because you get 1-1 times with an experienced sushi chef, getting explained where every fish came from and every ingredient. One cool thing that sushi sho rexley did is that they told you specifically how to eat each bite to maximize flavors. The chef and the host were friendly and patient with our questions. Arte, the host gave us a run down of the sake and even let us try some in order to decide, we ended up getting a variety of 7oz pours. The fish quality was extremely fresh and some of them were in house aged with different things such as citrus or fungi which gave such a texture explosion. I was with my wife, my 3 month old baby and my mom and we celebrated my birthday this day and Arte brought out a Japanese cake on the house which was very thoughtful. Overall, I am very grateful we were able to experience this restaurant and get my sushi fix in! I would recommend this and even come back if I'm in town again!

I ended up getting the Rising Sun signature roll, which contained shrimp tempura, asparagus, avocado, torched salmon, jalapeño, spicy mayo, eel sauce, scallions, and seasame seeds. I liked how crunchy the the shrimp and asparagus were; it paired well with the softness of the rice and avocado. The torched salmon also provided a little bit of smokiness. I just wish there were more pieces to the roll for the price. I also got the Harukuju Moment cocktail and the Amabuki Rose sake. The cocktail was pretty strong, but not too sweet. The sake was not on the dry side and lightly sweet. I got more of the apple taste in the sake in my opinion. I liked the vibes of the interior and the music was good! They asked if we had a reservation, and we didn't. Surprisingly, even though the restaurant was mostly empty, they told us it was full. The server came over and we decided to order: Boba Thai Tea, Salmon Nachos, Crispy Brussel Sprouts, Drunken Noodles, Ube Cake, Big Buddha Sushi Roll, and Japanese Milk Bread. The service was surprisingly fast, and we got our order, Crispy Brussels Sprouts and Japanese Milk Bread in just a minute. However, the Brussels Sprouts weren't hot or crispy, and the Japanese Milk Bread was disappointing. We also got Salmon Nachos, Big Buddha Sushi Roll, Drunken Noodles and Ube Cake also quickly. The Salmon Nachos were pretty disappointing - they were basically just salmon on nachos. We also had to send back the Drunken Noodles because they weren't cooked the way we like them. But honestly, the Big Buddha Sushi Roll was definitely the best thing we ate. The rolls were made really well and had a nice crispy texture. Honestly, our whole experience at the restaurant was pretty disappointing. The server didn't even come back after taking our order to clear plates or refill drinks.

I came on a weekday so it wasn't too busy however they said they do get pretty slammed on weekends. Beautifully designed interior and partly underground. I sat at the chefs bar counter and it was really cool being able to see the chefs working and preparing all the good. The bartender was very friendly and helped recommending some good options. I started off with the HIKARI KANRO drink and it was incredible. Very complex, a little salty a little sweet. Definitely worth a try. For food I went primarily with Nigiri. I had the Otoro, Chutoro, king Salmon, salmon belly, Uni, A5 Wagyu, Hokkaido Scallop and Yellowtail. Everything was incredible and super fresh. Just make sure to ask for Wasabi under the fish if you want the authentic way to have it made. I also had the Wagyu Gyozas which were very flavorful. I got the meet Chef Chris who was in front of me at the bar and he was super cool and friendly. He mentioned the most popular thing on the menu was the Akami Crudo. So he made a little sample for me to try and I do agree it was incredible. I will be getting that every time I dine here. Can't wait to return so I can have some of my favorites and try new things. We were seated after checking in which took about ten minutes. Our waiter, I think his name was Cody greeted us and said he was informed there was a "gluten allgery" at the table and said we will take good care of you so you dont have to worry about that. I did ask if there was a gluten-free menu and he said no, but everything was gluten-free on the menu except 2 items. Well, I thought this would be fairly easy because I wanted two simple things: the ceviche and the nigiri platter. So, the first thing I noticed is that all of my husband's food came out first so I just kind of sat there waiting. This sucks because his food would get cold while he is waiting for mine or we just have to eat at seperate times. So, 10 to 15 minutes later my food comes out. A waiter (not Cody) brings the nigiri platter and he points at it and says everything on here is gluten-free EXCEPT THIS STUFF. I was like wait WHAT? He repeated that again and I was like why would they serve this to me. So, I wait for our actual waiter to come back and we talk and he was like oh we will just remove that stuff. I advised him it all needed to be remade because it was all on the same platter and the cross contamination will make me extremely sick. So he says he will do that. He also blames the chef for the mistake. The platter comes back out (way too fast I may add) and so I am trusting that it was safe to eat now. Well, surprise surprise...less than 12 hours later I am extremely sick from gluten. And I was sick for FIVE WEEKS. I absolutely do not think my having Celiac Disease was taken seriously, absolutely NOT. At the point the mistake was made a manager should have come to talk to me. Furthermore, we were barely checked on the whole dinner and way more attention was being put on other tables meanwhile they messed up my food. I absolutely would not recommend anyone with Celiac disease dine here. I am unsure if they share their kitchen with Fortu (I was given a Fortu menu as well), but the SAME EXACT THING happened when I ate at Fortu and I was sick for weeks. My opinion on the food: The nigiri platter was priced fairly, but it was just ok. The ceviche which is supposed to be the national dish of Peru, was a huge dissapointment. It did not taste authentic and lacked all of the lime and acid and salt that is needed in a classic ceviche. The amount was also very small. My husband's fish dish was good according to him. He ordered that as his main entrée and it was very small. Way too small to be almost 50.00$ My take away is that this is not really Japanese Nikkei. If you want to taste this authentic Peruvian ceveche go to a Peruvian restaurant. This restaurant comes off more as a Japanese Izakaya than anything else. Drinks are meh. I had one cocktail and then I wanted champagne and for some reason I was steered towards the cheapest and most bitter sparkling wine for 8.00 and it was just awful. This was a terrible experience and I am still sick.
