Okay, it's not inexpensive to shop here, but if you're serious about textiles, knitting, crocheting and the like, it is possibly yarn heaven. The colours and textures of the yarn make you want to build your yarn stash in a really intense way. They have a wonderful assortment of top end yarns (including local yarns), roving, needles, notions and patterns. The knowledgeable staff are very helpful to novice knitters (they really helped me a lot when I started knitting) and give great advice. They run a number of wokshops every month on different topics, and there's a weekly Knitting Afternoon on Tuesdays at 1:30 pm where you can chat, work on your projects and enjoy the company of fellow knitters.

There are lots of sheep outside that you can watch running around and some cutout sheep figures if you want to pretend that you're one for a photo. Inside the barn were two kinds of sheep that you could pet if they came to the fence, as well as a Scottish Highland calf. There's also a display that shows all the steps to process wool from right off a sheep until it's ready to sell. Inside the shop they sell all kinds of wonderful woolies! You can obviously buy a large variety of wool, but you can also get pillows, socks, hats, mitts, knitting kits, shoe insoles, blankets, sheepskins, roving, needle felting kits, and crafts made by other local artisans. This spot is worth the trip and is great for kids or adults!

I just happened to see this shop and stopped in while visiting Tatamagouche - great find!…read more The shop is in a gorgeous big building (looked like an old house) with a wrap around veranda. There are tables and chairs on the veranda so that you can sit out and knit or have a cup of tea while enjoying the breeze. While I was there a felting workshop being offered by a local artisan outside! Inside there were two big rooms full of yarn, patterns and cute little knitting accessories. (E.g. I got a cute small project bag to hold odds & ends.) At the back of one of the rooms is the cash and the counter to order tea. There is also a third room that had some tables and chairs as well as all of their needles and main knitting accessories. I think they might offer classes in that space too. The two ladies who were working while I was there were lovely and very helpful! They were happy to chat about some of the yarns that they were offering and asked if I had any specific needs. I was happy to see different local yarns available, including some from Give it a Whorl (Janine Guinan) from Truro! By the end of the day I had already recommended this place to two more crafters I ran into! This shop is definitely worth a visit! Drive up from Halifax and make a day of it!

For this reason, I was impressed to pop into 'L K Yarns' yesterday. This is the yarn shop your Grandma probably goes to. Aisles of variety depending on the type of yarn you want to use. A pleasant sales lady greeted me as soon as I entered willing to fill my order asap. Places like this really make me want to take up knitting (again...).

It's got a great location down town across from a new Starbucks and it's perfect for picking up some yarn grabbing some needles and going across the street for a coffee and curling up with knitting.

Several cars of school kids arrived at about the same time to get a close-up look at sheep farming. This is a working farm with lots of lambs having just made their appearance and a lot of mama sheep nursing. It was a delightful scene, and everyone was invited to pet the little ones. Next door is the wool shop, and we found there a lot of delightful wool items made at the farm. We wound up admiring a lot of the merchandise and buying two attractive wool hats to keep us warm in wintry Connecticut and a skein of wool, all of high quality and quite reasonably priced. They also provide useful easy-to-follow instructions on how to take care of your purchases. Lismore is hardly on a main route, but if you are in this area and in need of woolen supplies it's worth a visit. The kids should enjoy it, too.

Purchased some fabric the other day and realized that it was not what was needed. I have purchased…read moretens of thousands of dollars from this store over the past number of years for a business. Many times, it is easier and more efficient to buy a bolt from the store rather than wait for the suppliers in Canada and the US. Went to Dartmouth to return the fabric today and was told to take it back to the Halifax location, Was told that there was no problem returning the fabric, since we are well known customers and usually buy large quantities of material. Was told that it had to be remeasured, which is understandable, since I may have taken an inch of two, which was not the case. Generally try to avoid the Halifax location, although it is located nearby our costuming business. I would rather spend money on tolls and gas to go to Dartmouth rather than deal with the Halifax location. The fabric was accepted, begrudgingly, although I felt that I was seen as something less than a valued customer. I was told that they do not accept returned fabric, since they have done so in the past and there have been bugs. What I am to infer from this comment? We have a large warehouse for the fabric that is clean, humidity controlled and certainly free of pests and bugs. Should I worry about bugs being in the fabric when I am buying from Fabricville? There is no information stating that there are no returns on fabric, aside from no returns on cut fabric. Please make this clear to your customers. In the future, I will shop elsewhere. I will make a point to avoid the Halifax store and can shop for sundries on line and fabric as well. I have never had a bad thing to say about the delivery drivers who come regularly to my door with packages. I learned growing up in a business family that when someone is happy, they may tell one person. If they are unhappy with the service they received they will tell ten people and so on, You have lost of customer, of which you seemingly don't care. This is unfortunate, since retail can hardly afford to disconnect with the paying public.

I saw one bolt of ordinary woven black 100% polyester fabric for a whopping $13 per metre - pass! There were a few amazing embroidered chiffons, although I don't think I'd pay upwards of $40 per metre even for that. There was a reasonably sized discount section, a huge quilting section full of 100% cotton prints, and a fairly large home decor section. The notions section is small, and so is the button selection. I left this store without buying anything. I don't thing I'd go back there unless I was desperate and had a lot of spare cash lying around.

I am the buyer for a historic costuming company in Halifax. I have been to Atlantic Fabrics more…read moretimes than I can count and have always had great service and am met by a pleasant staff. I know that it is cheaper to buy from suppliers, yet many times I need a small amount and I know where to go, Today, we were served again by a former Dalhousie graduate from the costuming studies department. She was efficient, courteous and very informative. If they don't have what you are looking for, rest assured, they will go to great lengths to find it for you in one of their other stores or in the warehouse. Compared to their competition, which is not an equal by any means, they are far superior in customer service and customer satisfaction. We usually buy entire bolts, rather than small amounts, yet it is not a problem. There is always something to be found that is of interest and there are usually hidden treasures among the bolts. Wish that there was a store in Halifax, although I will happily go to Dartmouth or even Truro to experience excellent customer service and a great selection of products. Once a customer, always a customer. Here, the customer is Queen or king, which is an old philosophy, yet one that still rings true.
