An off-the-beaten track sushi place which produces wholesale sushi must be good right?
The premise of Shinsen sounded good but the food offering sadly felt flat. I came here on a Saturday evening after 8 pm, it is just a few streets away from Sihlcity but it is in a residential area where you typically wouldn't go so I wasn't too surprised that they only had three other tables since it was already on the later side. After a quick glance on the relatively long menu, I went for the Yamakake, the salmon sashimi and a Sapporo beer.
The Yamakake was listed under the warm dishes and described as a rice bowl with raw tuna cubes and a poached egg. I am not sure why it was listed as a warm dish because all elements were icy cold. Now I obviously understand that the raw tuna is cold but the rice and egg were fridge temperature. This dish would have been so much better if the rice and egg would have been at least luke warm.
The salmon sashimi was also a bit of a miss. The salmon tasted fresh and of decent quality but the slices were about 1/3 inch thick. Yup the slices were too thick for my taste. Overall, I would say that both dishes disappointed, they were not disgusting but overall missed the mark.
The price was ok for sushi in Zurich but I can find much better alternatives here at this price level. The service was quick and correct but nothing too special either so I won't be returning to Shinshen soon. read more
