I grew up regularly eating Korean food in Korea and in the States; Shin Jung's food and menu is comparable to Korean diner food, but priced & presented like gourmet. The sheer fact that bibimbap is around 30+ euro is mindblowing to me as Koreans barely even serve that at restaurants because it is simple home cooking. And by simple, I really mean that. The American equivalent might be making a quick sandwich or a burger. The exact same Bibimbap runs around 8-10 euros in the States, exchange rate considered. This is just one example of what I noticed to be a bad discrepancy on their menu.
Taste was fine, nothing out of the park though. Charging 6 euro for generic side dishes (banchan) was also almost offensive for some reasons-- the fact that they charge at all, then charge what I think to be way more than they should, for what I got, which was very run of the mill. They are really taking the Korean cuisine concept and milking as much as they can out of it because this is just the wrong way to present and eat Korean food.
Food taste was authentic albeit not more than mediocre and how they serve the cuisine is totally off. I don't have an issue with upscale Korean cuisine but then there should be proof that there has been more quality, care and thought put into the final concept, presentation & the food itself. Korean palace cuisine, for example, could absolutely be justified in this price range. But alas, given I did not see very many Korean restaurants in Paris, I can see how the novelty allows this type of place to thrive the way it seems to.
So, I wish I had alternatives to list in Paris but unfortunately, I don't. I considered for a moment that maybe I felt this way because I wasn't used to French inflation for food pricing compared to the States, but to be honest, I had no qualms about this at any other establishment I dined at in Paris and there were many, and others, much more expensive. I did think it was a lovely interior and the service was overall pleasant, so they have that going for them. I saw many people on romantic dates and seeming to enjoy the experience a lot, so if you're not exposed to Korean food much, this may be a good place to try. But in reality, I believe one is getting duped.
If you even got this far through the review, I will say that the seafood pancake appetizer was a hefty portion, although quite undercooked but enjoyable enough for a famished tummy. Spicy kimchi pork app was ok and slightly bland. I would consider seeking out other Korean restaurants in Paris before coming back here. read more
