Our family had such a great time, we rented a cottage (36 bucks a night off season.) hiked for a few hours, borrowed a fishing rod from the park rangers office and fished for a bit. Our cottage simply had two twin bunk beds, electric baseboard heater, a table and a covered porch with picnic table. Worth a visit if you're in the area.

I was in the area for a well needed "girls weekend". We are not a spa-and-champagne group, we are…read morea hiking and exploring group, so learning about nearby Montour Preserve was great. The group was drawn by the Fossil Pit. There are also hiking trails around the lake, picnic areas and a visitor center. The preserve has multiple entry points from the commercial road - most people drive down to the second entry for the Fossil Pit, for example. We went through the visitor center, which is unstaffed but has some interesting exhibits. We learned that the big feature of the preserve, Lake Chillisquaque, is a 165-acre reservoir on the middle branch of Chillisquaque Creek. It was built as a backup cooling water supply for the nearby Montour Power Plant. The name 'Chillisquaque' comes from the native American term meaning 'song of the wild goose'. The plant is currently being converted from coal firing to natural gas, and as part of that the dam will be de-commissioned and turned over to a local body for future maintenance, along with a financial grant to support that. The dam is in an environmentally sensitive area, making removal more damaging than maintaining, as the materials read. I am not an expert on this. The trails mostly surround the lake, and some parts of them are currently closed for maintenance and repair. This is clearly marked on maps and in signs, and it didn't negatively impact our visit. Some of us went to the fossil pit, where they hunted and found a few small treasures. It's not a pit, exactly, it's a huge slope of rocks that you can climb up, sit on and use your rock tool to tap on rocks to see if there are fossils. I and a few others elected to walk the open part of a short trail by the visitor center and do the "planet walk" along the main trail, which has different stations for the planets showing by scale how far apart they are. It was neat. Parking was easy and plentiful in lots, the trails were well maintained. The bathrooms in the visitor center were modern, clean and well-equipped. There was no functional water fountain in the visitor center so they had a sign on top of water bottles instructing people to take one for free, which was really nice. We all enjoyed the preserve and would definitely return should we be in the area again.

Came here on Sat 10/25 to hike with a couple gf's and brought my doggo, Linc, since it's a dog…read morefriendly trail. I work out but I wasn't ready for this trail as a first time hiker lol! I wore sneakers but would have greatly benefited from hiking boots for more ankle support after slipping and tripping my way along the dense leaf covered dirt trail that continued to get more rocky on the ascent. Also, you will need to climb some legit large rocks/boulders to reach the Pulpit Rock overlook but the challenge was well worth it for the views! My gf's & I chose the easy way down which was to take the gravel road alongside the observatory that eventually transitions to pavement. Even the decline of this road was steep in itself. No easy way up or down haha! I saw people of all ages and fitness levels along my hike and plenty of cute dogs! Bring snacks and water to re-energize during a rest break. My one friend packed some TP and I thought it was a great idea cuz you just never know when you might have to go! Parking lot is a joke with ~20-25 spots but many ppl, including us, parked along Reservoir Rd so make sure to get here early in the morning or expect to walk a couple extra miles just to reach the start of the trail.

Great spot for a day hike, with beautiful views at the two main lookouts - Pulpit Rock and the…read morePinnacle. The hardest part of the hike is getting to Pulpit Rock, as it starts with a fairly steep road to get to the trail, and then some more elevation climb as you get up to the lookout. From there, it's probably another 2.5 miles or so to get to the Pinnacle, but the elevation gain is minimal. Both of these stops provide great views, with lots of raptors flying around if you're lucky! Bring snacks and water, especially on a hot day, and cameras to take pictures!

This happened to me on Wednesday at the Little Pine Campground when I said to the receptionist Kate, "Hi , I'm Jim Hasson. I reserved a Yurt for the next few days!" That expression I mentioned above hit me immediately, telling me there was a problem...and there was. "Uh sir, those Yurts have been booked through the summer, " she explained, as a doctor would tell you that a loved one just died, " I believe I noticed that you rented a Pavilion for the next 3 days." Let me rewind to a few weeks earlier. My friend Steve and I decided to go on a mini camping trip. Since it was short noticed and we had little camping gear, I decided we should try and get some kind of cabin. Since I'm cheap I downloaded the PA State Park app and scoured it for something to reserve. It was hard to find a cabin, most required a week stay and were already booked. I then found something called a Yurt, it was like a little furnished Tee pee and it fit our needs. I booked it for the 2 nights immediately. Many will remember my post about wondering why it didn't include 2 nights and we had to check in at 8amWed and check out at 8pm Thurs. I won't rehash it here but consider this one of the red flags that led to our downfall. I even contacted a human to ask about it. Not someone at Little Pine (if only!) but just some operator in their data base. She had me book an extra night. But big deal, because my buddy Steve and I were going camping! Except maybe we weren't. We stood in the park office getting the bad news from Kate, with a car full of camping supplies (not a tent) and a load of recently purchased groceries, some of them perishable, in need of the mini fridge we thought we'd be getting with the Yurt. As I was being told we rented a Pavilion for 3 days- Kate: We were all wondering what kind of cult event was going on for 3 days at a pavilion! - I had images of Steve and I on sleeping bags on picnic tables or maybe building some kind of fort with them. But Kate, to her credit, sprung into action. (Glowing Yelp review to follow). She got on the phone and began calling around to anywhere local where we could find a tent or cottage. Unfortunately it was fruitless but I still love her for trying. Finally, she called park maintenance and had them set us up a tent, that they luckily had in storage. Between Kate, the maintenance guy (whose name I wish I had asked) and a Ranger named Jeb, we were well taken care of and our trip was not only saved but enhanced (now we were kind of really roughing it!). The error was chalked up to a crappy interface for their App, a faceless 1-888 number that knows nothing about the actual parks and my own stupidity and bad luck. We were refunded the yurt/pavilion fee and just paid for a campsite which was all considerably cheaper. I was so happy that I wouldn't be sleeping on a park bench that I happily exclaimed to Kate on my way out, "If anyone wants to use our Pavilion, they are more than welcome!" While in the car on the way to one of our many side trips that day, I was feeling a bit guilty that the one thing I was in charge of got ruined, I tried to apologize to Steve, "I'm sorry man, I don't know what happened. I guess it's because I'd never rented a Yurt before" Steve, in his infinite wisdom, simply replied, "Well, technically , you still haven't."

A beautiful scenic campground. We were in site 039 and were grateful there was nobody across from…read moreus when we arrived or when we left as it was very tight. It was very buggy when we arrived (late July) but the weather turned cooler and we had beautiful weather for our four night stay. There was no sewer or water hookup at our site but the bathhouse was close. We walked some of the trails and everything was beautiful. We brought kayaks but the water we paddled in by the dam was just ok. Lots of vegetation close to the surface, etc. We stayed to visit friends nearby. Dogs are welcome but they don't want you walking them by the no-pet sites, which is a little awkward.

Ricketts Glen is a very special place for me and my family, and we have been visiting annually for…read moremany years. Lodging: My family likes to stay in the little cabins in the park. They have two or three bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a fire ring. They are fully furnished and climate controlled, which is nice in the winter and summer. However, there is no WiFi or cell service (unless you have A T and T) so be mindful of that when you book. I have never stayed at the campsites, so I cant speak for accommodations there. Activities: There's so much to do around the park, including boating or swimming at Lake Jean, exploring the many miles of trails, or having a family barbecue. The most famous trail in the park, the Falls Trail, is a must-hike for visitors. The trail can be steep, rocky, and slippery, and the main loop (not including the bottom three falls) runs about 5 miles, which is longer than the advertised distance, so be prepared. Bring good shoes and lots of water and expect some amazing views of the falls. The other trails in the park are also beautiful, albeit far less traveled. I did the 13 mile loop from cherry run to mountain springs road to the mountain springs trail, and it was a great distance and not too steep. We went past the old Lake Leigh dam breast and an unnamed waterfall with a nice swimming hole. The cherry run and mountain springs trails have lots of tall grass, so make sure to wear long pants in case of ticks. Additionally, the spring runs right through portions of the mountain springs trail, so be prepared to get your feet a little wet. I look forward to each year I get to go to Ricketts and even though I am sad I'm home, I'm super excited for next year!

My birthday is the most important day of the year. This is a fact. I get very ornery if I don't…read morespend the day/week/month the way that I want. For 3 years running The Plan has been to go to Acadia. First year: someone went to an international wedding of 500 people and got the Rona Second year: someone bought a big rig and rates were in the toilet Third year: Someone was tired and the planing was overwhelming I just knew this would be The Year. Sike - Rain and thunderstorms forecasted from May 27-June 4 and we had a campsite lmaaoooooo But one thing about me - I'm gon pivot every time. So we booked a Hipcamp and headed to PA instead. I wanted open land, dark skies, and opportunities to hike. Ricketts was only 10 minutes away!! All I knew about this park beforehand was that it was a waterfall paradise. We had our dog with us and arrived at Ricketts around 4pm on a Sunday. We checked out some of the small falls at the trailhead then did the Evergreen Trail. Beautiful view of Adams Falls, a lovely wooded walk through an old growth forest, and some climbs here and there to keep your heart rate up. I love when Wesley goes out on the trails - he sniffs everything, bounds ahead to scout the path, and patiently waits until I can clear obstacles. Still, given the height and uneven terrain of even this shorter trail in the park, I would likely return without him to take on some of the more challenging routes. Making sure he didn't fly off the ledge and I didn't fall off the stone steps had my nervous system on fire lol. I'm also old now and believe feet should always stay rooted to the floor. So yeah. The park is very dog friendly and we love that. But for me and mine, maybe we'll come solo next time. Summed Up: Beautiful Ethereal Calming Steep Heights Dog-friendly Free Do it!

Covered concert stage & uncovered bench seating is ready for summer concert season. Center bridge could use new paint on rails. Picnic tables would be nice addition, but then it might require more maintenance to keep area trash-free. Street parking is available on either side of lake.
