Shiny new path from the Silo straight to the library.

Spent too much time here. It's a great resource for high schoolers but everything these days is online and more up to date than the stacks. One thing that this place has ALWAYS been good for in the summer is that air conditioning. The miserably warm three digit days of full sun would push me towards spending time either here or in the basement of Kemper Hall. Seems like most things are going digital though, so will the stacks be here much longer? As long as folks still love the nostalgia. As for borrowing: https://library.ucdavis.edu/library-accounts/ -Alumni Association (your basic blue check mark on Twitter) member? OK. You have to pay for it and it's a limited account. 4 week loan period. -Faculty and Staff account? A little better. Not sure why you'd want to borrow 300 items for up to a year, but you can. -Undergrad? 300 items, 4 weeks. Marry an employee and you get better than a paid alum assoc. account but for free...even if you're a UC alumnus yourself.

Basement doesn't have much room or outlets, but it's pretty quiet. A good place to come if you have only an hour or two between classes but aren't planning on really hunkering down. First floor is pretty noisy and doesn't have a lot of outlets. I usually don't study here unless I'm meeting with a group. Second floor has the main reading room. It can get noisy but it's pretty solid, usually, since it's got lots if seats and plenty of outlets. Third floor has some great tables with power strips attached to them, but you'll need to be early or lucky to grab one. Fourth floor is usually silent and has lots of tables and cubicles if you aren't using power. However, if you need an outlet, your best bet is always the main reading room. I'm actually writing this review right now to procrastinate studying.

Oh Shields. How I love you so. So much so that I'd rather come here to study than anywhere else. Especially at 9 in the morning after seeing Calvert. I usually have a two or three hour break before my next class so I try to get some alone time here as much as I can. My favorite spot is on the fourth floor. I love it! At 9 in the am, there are virtually zero people up there. I study in the back side of the library and I get really focused. The tables are humongous and have lots of space for all my stuff that I put on there. To get to the fourth floor, I always take the stairs. It's a workout! Elevators = laziness for me. I also love the window seats, not to study but for napping. haha The only problem perhaps is the lack of electrical outlets for the laptops. But I don't really mind it anymore since I am here so much early in the mornings, and I take a plug. If I am ever on campus during the day, and not in class or with a friend, it'll be right here.

    Group study time!

Best place to study midterms! Avoid the big reading room, sometimes it could become a bit chaos!

This is my go-to study place when I'm on campus. Little to no Internet connection in the basement, but that just means more study time lol.

The 2nd floor is great for group work while the third floor is great for a more silent environment. Large tables are everywhere and the chairs are slightly padded. I feel like bathrooms are something UC Davis always skimps on. Old buildings always seem to undergo some type of minor renovations but it always excludes the bathrooms. Consequently, the small tiles have gathered decades of grime and filth. It doesn't help that they only seem to be cleaned once a day. There's only a single occupancy restroom for men on the 2nd floor.

Even if it's busy everyone is very quiet, not like Shields with all the chatter. Just not a fan of the computers not being part of the normal page printing. They're a part of repro so you end up having to pay a minimum of $5 even if you want 1 page. They're also extremely extremely slow, I don't think they've updated the computers in over a decade. I just complain because they're the closest to Mondavi and I sometimes have to print and don't want to walk all the way to Olson, it's probably not a problem for most people. I've never used them, but they have legos to play with when you walk in, seems like fun :)

Vacaville just spent $2.6M I believe it is and it took over a year to upgrade the library here. It is just around the corner from me and I have dearly loved it for nearly 20 years. Once warm and inviting with a charming tree sculpture in the children's area it now seems rather unaesthetic and the materials came across as cheap-looking to me. I thought to myself that I could've done a better job with $680,000 on a Home Depot credit card! I mean for God's sake ~ $2.6.M!? Gimme a break. They could not even power wash the filthy bench area out front located as the last thing you see before you go through the new front doors? That wonderful wood tree sculpture that was always so wonderful to gaze at every time I ever went in there should at least be put in the large computer area or SOMEPLACE within the new library (they are apparently trying to "rehome it" elsewhere in town) So please~ power wash that entire cement area out front! And do whatever you can to warm it up. I will miss the comfy chairs near the entrance where people used to sit and read for hours ~ I don't recall seeing any place to do that anymore but admittedly I took a quickie tour. as there just wasn't much to see of interest. It just seemed to be so sterile! You can go outside where they have some type of patio area out back. But it's not the same that's for sure. I'm also concerned that when I double-checked my facts on the price I saw that it was actually over $24M! Heart attack time! When I first heard of $2.6M and then took the tour I thought we're looking at a lot of corruption here; there had to be a ton of kickbacks somewhere ~something is off. It simply doesn't look like a $2.6 mil upgrade! And if it's $24M then somebody needs to open up an investigation by midnight tonight! Everybody go see for yourselves. Is it just me? Am I off? In the meantime I'll post these two photos....

First thing I noticed that it is very clean, including the bathrooms! It is also very quiet, which is an excellent environment to study in, even without headphones! Each cubicle has their own outlets, so you don't have to worry about your MacBook/laptop battery dying. They also offer free wifi here! I did not have any trouble finding parking, thank God. There are several 2 hour guest parking, which is convenient and FREE! I'm definitely a fan of this library and I'll be utilizing it whenever I'm in the area.

I prefer this library because of its hours, in addition to it being quiet and clean. The only pitfall would be that you have to pay for parking if you intend on staying longer than two hours. The two hour parking is closer to the building, but if you're going to stay longer park in Lot 18 and pay $6 for an all day parking pass. DO NOT park in the parking structure, there's an hourly rate there. For $6, you can come and go as you please. It can get costly if you're going to study everyday, but think of it as an investment towards your future. Tip: The ticket booth is towards the back of the lot. I suggest driving to the booth, have your license plate readily at hand, pay for your ticket, and find a parking spot. Oh yeah, I didn't see any private rooms if you have a meeting of some sort.
