With butternut squash for $1 and acorn squash for $.75 each, I knew I was in my seasonal glory. The owners wife takes prize in her heirloom varieties and has a wall of each pumpkin variety with their unique name and suggested uses. Ranging from $6 for a large cinderella pumpkin to $3 turban, I filled my cart and headed back to Brooklyn to roast, can and preserve these beauties. I would say this is worth the country drive!

Yesterday and today are the soft openings for the store with the grand opening this weekend so I…read morestopped by to see what was going into the old Kmart building. With such a weird name I wasn't sure what to expect. It's a mix of a well organized Ollie's or Christmas Tree Hill, or what Big Lots used to be. Tons of items ranging from clothing, gardening, tools, pet supplies, cleaning supplies and shelf stable foods at discounted prices. Since it's still in preview stages, the store was clean and bright, most shelves well stocked and kinda felt like a warehouse. They do carry some name brand things but most of it is off brand so don't go in expecting to get a specific type of item. Most staff greeted us, asked if we needed anything and the registers got through the lines pretty fast. A few hiccups but that's to be expected since its so new. Overall nothing really stands out but its nice to have a large scale store again to get misc items from without having to drive all the way to Lancaster or Harrisburg.

Leabrook Farms is a place I could see from 283 but never really knew how to get there to access it. It's a few miles off State Rd., on Leabrook Rd, and you can't miss it. A storm was brewing that day when I arrived so I didn't spend as much time as I would have liked. Every plant was 50% off, even ones already on sale were not excluded from the sale. They had annuals, perennials, succulents, houseplants, and arrangements. I was in awe. Tables and tables of plants in good condition, small and large + a few greenhouses. I filled a wagon and had I had a larger vehicle would have gotten more. Some of my favorite scores were the succulents, a decent size, all $1 and some change after the discount. I also scored a massive mostera plant for less than $10 that at Lowes for that size sells for $64. In hindsight I wish I would have bought them all for resale and made a few bucks. While many of the plants were labeled, there were many more that were not. Since I'm looking more for low light houseplants, a label identifying the plant and care instructions would have been helpful for many of the items I bought. The plain (Mennonite) employee there said they came from an auction and she didn't have any information. Also some of the prearranged plants in ceramic containers had chips, and or appeared to be used, like they picked them up at a thrift store. Not that I'm opposed to that, but some weren't in the best of shape. I made it out right before the storm, barely, with a car full of plants in tow. I would visit them again even at full price, but most definitely at their 50% sale. Since they are plain owned and operated no Sunday hours.

The clock has never functioned correctly since. unable to wind more than a turn or 2 at best. and then it would stop after a very short period of time (just a few hours) this is an 8 day clock. after a few years of not knowing what to do or who to get to work on it I was able to local another clockmaker. He was more than willing to fix it. I have now been informed that the clock only had oil sprayed on everything and nothing else was done. I was sent pictures of the oil just smeared all over the gears. it is totally disgusting. for what I paid to have this work done I was totally ripped off. If I could put a minus score I would. I would never recommend this business to anyone. if you value your time piece please find another clock maker to do the work.

I brought 5 Seiko watches in for repair; none were running. Two of the watches had some corrosion…read morein the movements and he was unable to find replacements. He does not rebuild movements, which is certainly his choice. No biggie. The other 3 required batteries/capacitor and were repaired. One of the watches is 28 years old and has needed a battery for years but I neglected it. He got it working with some extra work for the simple cost of a new battery. The solar watch needed a battery and then needed the contacts cleaned. He kept it running to monitor its accuracy and called me when he was satisfied it worked correctly. Certainly, I was bummed to find out 2 watches couldn't be repaired here, but I'm the one who didn't maintain them properly. And I am thankful he got the other 3 watches working. Customer service I have to say was always prompt and courteous.
