There is also pretty limited cell phone service, from Verizon anyway, on the way out here so make sure you've got your maps downloaded. Clean restrooms are at the entrance to the trail as well

The campsites are either along the Trans Canada highway (not good) or in the trees along the glorious dunes (glorious) or nestled in between (pretty great). Either way, you are always steps from a pristine and incredible beach scene. Clear sparkling blue water, sharp cool and clean, a wide pancake arc of beach with maybe one other family in kayaks peacefully exploring the landscape that still looks and feels like the northern wilds of the Group of Seven painters. Heaven. This is a perfect long clean white sand beach like you'll find in only a couple other tourist-over-run places in the world, and the fact that it's under snow for 6 months, and eaten by monster mosquitoes for another 2, and pretty far from any major city, keeps it a treasure just for those sweet souls who live on the rim of the great lake, or those travelers like us who roll down the long ribbon of highway through the woods and are lucky enough to spend their nights in the hospitable wild wonderlands of Canada's parks.

We were looking for an adventure with our new-ish kayaks. We fortuitously read a Michigan tourism magazine tucked into the Chicago Tribune; the magazine featured a story about kayaking in Les Cheneaux with Woods & Waters. It sounded great! Though we are comfortable on the water, we thought it would be good to have a guide in an area new to us -- and Tim was a perfect guide for our half-day paddle! We learned so much about this beautiful and interesting area, saw an eagle and its nest, did a quick mid-paddle hike to get an amazing view to go with our rock skipping and gained a few kayaking skill tips that will make us better kayakers. It certainly was a bonus that the water and weather cooperated -- water like glass and just enough sun. Tim - thanks for the advice to do the Narnia hike - that was our afternoon adventure! We ended our day at Les Cheneaux Distillers. The day couldn't have been better. We loved our paddle so much and felt comfortable with our newfound knowledge from Tim that we went back for a quick paddle the next morning. We wish we could have stayed on the water all day! Thank you Sue and Tim. We will see you next time!

It was the most chaotic, stressful, dangerous thing we've done as a group. Do not do a rafting trip if you think you're going to have any time to enjoy the scenery, talk, or enjoy a family activity. The river was extra fast due to high water levels and there are constant obstacles to avoid. We are all lucky to have made it with only minor injuries. Way too many close calls. It was not just us that were not enjoying our time on the river. Every kayaker and tuber we encountered felt exactly the same way. Several said they'd been crying at times, it was so chaotic.
