This is actually probably the nearest fish and chip shop to where I live, however due to the excellence that Five Star (Station Road) and the good reputation of Top Gun, until recently I'd never even been to Victoria Fish Bar. The food in my opinion is pretty average, in particular I really wasn't that keen on the fish. The staff on the other hand were incredibly friendly and chatty and I almost come back purely due to them. What is special about this place though, is that it's one of the only Fish and Chip shops which is open on a Sunday. So whilst from Monday to Saturday I'd recommend going somewhere else, if you find yourself on a Sunday with a desperate craving for Fish and Chips, you know just where to go.

There is a casual single file queuing system that kind of snakes around the shop. You order and pay at the same time, then stand around for them to get through a bunch of orders at once. It does mean if you want something cooked special you will have to wait first in the queue and then wait again as they cook, so expect up to 10 minutes for things like haddock, chicken and some pies. The old favourite will set you back a touch more than a fiver (even more if you want mushy peas) but as we all know that's because we British went a tad bit berserk with the fishing in the 90s. Big fat steak and kidney pies, sausage rolls and bits of chicken are up for grabs should you want something else, all of which is, as with the fish and chips, very yummy indeed. Normally, they're very grimy but Castaways maintains a clean dining space with a chic looking counter as well. Customer Service: Nothing too exceptionally friendly, but they are efficient. The place was really busy when I came and I noticed the staff did a great job with speeding through orders to make sure a long queue didn't necessarily mean a long wait. Food: I opted for Cod & Chips with gravy as I always do. It came with a small side salad as well. The food was delicious! The chips were cooked beautifully and so was the fish. There wasn't too much batter on the fish (often times at different chippys the batter would completely overwhelm the fish) and it was very light. They even had a sign up on the wall telling you where the fish came from! I really liked their gravy as well. It didn't taste generic - in fact, it had a nice hint of beef flavour in the background. Just under £15 to feed 2 people is a little bit on the high end in terms of fish and chip prices, but with the quality I wouldn't be opposed to coming back. The food was delicious and the service was efficient, worth a go!

That's why I rarely go to a fish and chip shop I don't know - if i do it has to be highly recommended. Years ago - I'd just moved into my first flat in the Penylan area. It needed a lot of work and so I was painting it. I had no food in so I decided to get some chips. Not knowing the area I asked my new next door neighbour who recommended Penylan Fish Bar. He wasn't wrong - I can see why they have won awards - chips were perfect as was their golden battered cod. As I scoffed the lot i sat in my empty part decorated flat and thought to myself, "I am now living next door to an award winning chippy - result!"
