Brazos Animal Hospital - My fur baby getting worse after surgery...

    Brazos Animal Hospital

    (10 reviews)

I took my dog in for a scheduled spay after she got an infection from her last heat cycle a month…read moreearlier. Brazos Animal Hospital called five times within a two day period before the scheduled surgery. Two of the phone calls were to confirm that I was still coming and three of the phone calls were to make sure I was aware of the estimated cost of the expensive spay procedure. I also received one more phone call 40 minutes after I picked up my dog after the surgery letting me know that the correct meds were delivered to them 20 minutes after I left. This was a confusing phone call because Brazos Animal Hospital sent me home with the correct meds, but in a form that just needed to be doubled up to reach the original prescription. Evidently, they neglected to communicate with each other about the amended meds. Then...crickets. There was no follow up phone call to check on my fur baby's status after surgery. I just followed the instructions to keep her quiet and calm for the next two weeks until she healed. To be fair, an infection in the uterus was discovered during the surgery...which was an unexpected complication. However, the spay surgery was still treated like a normal surgery despite their findings to the contrary upon opening her up and discovering she had pyometra. My fur baby's health slowly deteriorated during her recovery at home over the next few days until I felt the need to take her to I-20 Animal Hospital as a precaution. After completing an ultrasound, they discovered she still had an infection in her abdomen that was not removed during the spay. The incision made during the initial spay surgery was not long enough to see or reach all of the infected areas. A small incision is fine for a routine spay, but not for a spay complicated by a pyometra infection. During the second emergency surgery it was discovered that my dog had multiple blood clots from internal bleeding from Brazos Animal Hospital not treating the pyometra and continuing the surgery like a regular spay. The type of sutures used for a regular spay were not adequate for her enlarged organs as a result of the pyometra infection, resulting in internal bleeding. I paid Brazos Animal Hospital over $600 to have my fur baby slowly suffer for four days and finally escalate to the point where an emergency vet was required. When Brazos Animal Hospital saw the enlarged organs and infection present during the procedure, the routine spay should have immediately changed to a pyometra surgery so that all of the infection could be located and removed. I know mistakes can happen, but I just feel like Brazos Animal Hospital cared more for the potential money to be earned than they did for my fur baby's health. Once they received their money, they were basically done with me and all communication stopped. I went back there in person to tell them everything that I am writing here so that they can (hopefully) make improvements in the future when dealing with the beloved pet of someone else. Honestly, I won't be back, though. Too many mistakes were made that could have easily been averted. The trust is gone as a result of this $600+ blunder. My beloved dog has now spent two days at I-20 Animal Hospital with a vet bill of $3,000+ (and climbing) and I still do not know if she will live through the experience as I-20 Animal Hospital tries to fix everything that went wrong at Brazos Animal Hospital. If my dog lives through this, I'll just make it a point to go to I-20 Animal Hospital where I have always received exceptional care...and a follow-up phone call to check on my fur baby. In my opinion, it is worth the drive to get professional expert care from a team of vets that I trust. Update: Thanks to I-20 Animal Hospital my fur baby will survive the experience of getting her spay done here. The vets there are still talking about the "stump" that they had to remove during the emergency surgery to save her life. My advice for anyone utilizing the services of Brazos Animal Hospital is to do your research and follow your heart.

Anyone who knows me, KNOWS I am a loyal customer and refuse to change my small business favorites. I was heart broken because we love our old groomer! So after several other failed attempts and my babies getting abused and hurt by other groomers I was desperate! I contacted her via Facebook messenger on a friend's recommendation to make an appointment. She was super sweet, very accommodating, nice and professional. The fact that my big stinkers Bucky didn't growl or bark like banshees was amazing! She was also super sweet with my baby. I was hopeful but still nervous because I am ALL about my dogs whenever I try new groomers or boarders. If my babies get hurt or mistreated I go Mama Bear mode on anyone and everyone. Just ask my husband lol. I even advised her that my baby Bucky has sensitive skin and needed hypoallergenic dog shampoo. I also showed her pictures of what my Bucky looked like after the last grooming appointment from my last groomer. She asked very great questions and I was very impressed with all her probing questions. I did ask how long the appointment would take because I either wanted to wait or go into own since I lived an hour away. She encouraged me to either wait or go enjoy the peach festival but it would be about a hour. I waited and she even recommended a brush for my big chocolate lab. I am not going to lie I was expecting a lot. I have high standards and want my monies worth. I even bought the recommended brush she uses in her dogs and OMG it is a life changer! I went ahead and book another appointment 6 weeks later. She is amazing and will recommend to any an all!
