I am so grateful for Ami Desai! I had been researching South Asian makeup artists in Southern…read moreCalifornia a year before my wedding date. It was really important that I find one person who could do it all--hair, makeup for Indian skin, and "proper" dressing/pinning, as you never know what you'll get with a random "aunty" from your family. I did a trial with her for my engagement session, loved the work, and my professional photos came out great! I did something very simple and natural, and I didn't have any idea of what I wanted, so I told her to do whatever she thought would look nice on me. I was really impressed with her knowledge and technique. She has an amazing make-up spread as well! There is definitely a certain style I was looking for in my wedding look. I wanted to look like an Indian bride, but a lot of the Indian makeup artists out there are very heavy on the color and are into the "matchy-matchy" eyeshadows. I wanted to look more fresh and modern and wanted my make-up to complement my clothes, not compete with. I didn't even have to explain, because as soon as I started talking she finished my sentence. She knew exactly what I wanted from the get-go, and this is what I think sets her apart. Some of the other elite artists/companies out there, who I thought also suited my style (I ended up booking one of them because Ami wasn't available for one of my events) were really overpriced and/or had terrible customer service due to their no shortage of clientele. Like some of the other reviewers mention, Ami is very quick in responding to email/following up with you, being up front about costs, etc. She listens to you, and really makes every effort to accommodate her client's needs. Her price is competitive with other services out there, but you get exactly what you pay for--quality work and quality service. She had the added task of trying to conceal my puffy crying eyes on the day of (as I had some drama earlier in the day), but she did a great job and helped me ice my under eyes while she was setting my hair. Additionally, my community has a unique dupatta pinning style and with some pictures and the guidance of one of my friends, she was able to get it right on the first try. She also has some cool tricks to make the dupatta stay on your head! I highly recommend Makeup By Ami and follow her make-up blog as well! She really knows her stuff--you can tell from her own flawless style and make-up job! You won't be disappointed at all! Take it from me--a picky, perfectionist bride.

Before the big day she touch bases with me a few times, which I barely got with other vendors for the wedding. She was very organized, prompt, and easy to get along with. She made everything less stressful and she made me feel so beautiful. She's definitely the type of person that will listen to you and give you her professional advice. And trust me, she's a PRO. I tried to spend my money wisely for the wedding; the choice to get Mili was one of the best decisions I made for my bridal party and myself. I guess this may be another review on yelp, but the pictures from my wedding day will be proof enough. Also, just had to add that I have really really oily skin and somehow I lasted the whole night with just one touch up mid-celebration by Mili herself; that is unheard of with my skin type. I got to focus on celebrating with my friends and family then worrying about my makeup slipping off. Thanks Mili for making me feel comfortable in my own skin and making me look my best on my wedding day!

I can't say enough about the amazing job Mili Simon did for me and my wedding party or put into…read morewords how big her talent is. Like the reviewer before me, I also feel like hiring Mili was one of the best wedding planning decisions that I made for my day. I was a very, very particular bride, and although I'd been to many of the top salons in the Sacramento area, I didn't feel like anyone that I'd worked with in the past could cut it for my special day. So I went online and did extensive research into the top stylists in the area, and I stumbled upon Mili's website and portfolio and was floored! Her talent is utterly amazing. I knew that someone with her skill and extensive background in the editorial world who also happened to have a background in the bridal world was the one for me. Our first meeting started off with a haircut and wedding day consultation. She not only gave me an amazing cut and style, but she was planning for the future by preserving certain areas of my hair that she knew she'd need for hiding extensions later on. Her knowledge and eye for all things beauty is insane. We then planned a hair and makeup trial a couple months before my wedding, which went phenomenally. She took pictures at every angle, which she then sent to me with notes so that she could get my feedback on anything that I wanted to tweak. Her attention to detail and perfectionism is what truly made me feel like I had absolutely nothing to worry about on my wedding day. A week before the wedding, Mili gave me a final cut and color. She brought me back to my natural dark color, which I hadn't been for a while, and I loved it. When my wedding day came, Mili was the very first person to arrive at my venue, literally. She showed up early and went right to work on making my bridesmaids, mom, and MIL look the most beautiful I have ever seen or could imagine them. All the while, Mili was doing everything she could to help with the flow of the other vendors and to keep me as stress-free as possible. Since I had a few wardrobe and hairstyle changes throughout the day, Mili stayed all day to not only style me, but to touch up my bridesmaids all day long. I think she actually became an honorary bridesmaid, because all of my girls absolutely adored her! She was my right-hand woman and my saving grace that day! Her calming and uplifting demeanor made me feel like all the little things that went wrong didn't even happen. I was also lucky enough to have Mili style me for my day-after shoot with my photography team, and they couldn't say enough nice things about her either. With her experience working in TV, print, and photo shoots (and working with tons of celebrities, I might add!), she knew exactly what shots the photographer needed and put every strand of hair and every fold of wedding dress and veil fabric in its proper place. When I changed into a different outfit, she whipped my hair from being down into a beautiful up-do in less than 5 minutes. She is a magician with hair. My now husband's hair is getting a bit thin on top, and she has this stuff that she uses to make it seem like he has the thickest hair, and it stays put all day--even through the 100 degree heat and sweat! I recommend asking about it if someone in your wedding party is self conscious about their thinning hair. I'm blessed to have gotten to know Mili and to have been able to use her enormous talent on one of the biggest days of my life. Since I knew right away from my first meeting with Mili that I would hire her, I didn't get a chance to shop around much so I can't speak to how her rates compare to other hair and makeup artists. What I can tell you is that she's worth every penny. And that hiring her will be one of the best decisions you'll make for your wedding or special event. Just take a look at her portfolio :)

My skin tone requires specialized knowledge when it comes to color balance, and I rarely wear make-up, so was nervous initially. Maria vanquished my fears immediately by working with me to convey her abilities through a selection of products, color palettes, and application ideas to highlight, not overpower my natural look. And she was generous with expert suggestions when I found myself at a loss. She was very friendly and conversational, while never losing sight of the primary goal for the shoot. Maria also collaborated with the professional photographer, to make sure her plan made sense for each intended shot. For example, at one point she recommended a shift in lip color in order to further compliment the photographers use of natural light on a segment of the shoot. The color impact was stunning. I highly recommend Maria for her expertise in make-up artistry, the strong quality of her products, and overall knowledge of make-up as applies to photography. Tatiana listened to me and made my look better than the photos I provided! I asked for a natural, glowing skin look with beach wave hair. My face was glowing and at the last minute we decided to add a braid to my hair to see if I liked. And I LOVED it!!! And she told me that I could take out the braid at the end of the shoot and I could have a messy wavy look so I'd have 2 hair looks instead of one! You definitely know she has a lot of experience with photoshoots, commercial, weddings etc because she knows how to do your makeup and hair to get the most out of it. I didn't even think I could have two different looks if I took down the braid. Her studio is in Santa Monica but since I was very close to it, she came to my house without an additional cost. She's also very prompt with her communication. Since my shoot was very far away (in Laguna Beach), I was afraid my makeup and hair wouldn't last because I wouldn't have Tatiana with me on location.
