We had Sunday lunch in the panelled room, whose walls are lined with stunning period carved oak wood panels, featuring various classical figures and contemporary Jacobean motifs. The menu is very swish, featuring dishes such as seared scallops, petit sale, smoked roe and salmon blini, with horseradish cream and gressingham duck breast, caramelised red chicory, with hazelnut dressing, but considering how good it is, it is extremely reasonably priced - only £15.50 for two courses, £19.50 for three. I had hamhock and pickled walnut terrine to start, followed by guineafowl and dumplings, and finished with a salt caramel chocolate pudding which was damn good. The service was attentive, and the presentation of the food was great, my terrine came attractively arranged on a slate platter. I didn't see any of the rooms, but if you are looking for a place to go for a special meal I would strongly recommend Pelham House. The garden has a slightly Mediterranean feel with lots of sculptures and some palms, and a dovecot adds charm to the courtyard car park, although it seems to house a rather lonely solitary dove.

Our room (no. 40) was beautifully decorated - recently too and was very clean (no view though, overlooked the roof). Comfy bed. Dinner was excellent and great value at £25 for 3 courses. Bar staff attentive and friendly. Would stay again for sure. Only 2 niggles which are small - first being they could use frosted lower windows in the room we stayed in - no net curtains, therefore people in corridor opposite could see straight in, also, no breakfast menu in room even though they gladly provide breakfast in room - resulted in amusing 10 minute phone call to reception re what we could order. I would definitely stay again, short walk from station too.

So my first priority was just simply to sit by a radiator, which was quite hard to do apparently, until they found what looked like something straight from my grandpa's house/the seventies. A little beige number whirring, like a washing machine was all the radiators they had in this room, and the young porter thankfully wacked it up to 7 (which was the highest gauge...?) I ordered just a cup of tea, and was ready for them to charge me over £3, to which I was already becoming indignant about (in my head), but in fact it was only £1.40, so that was fair. There was nothing special about it, but it did the job well enough. So i sat there in the Hart's bar, all alone, in the slightly faded grandeur, and above the glass dome which rises above the inside swimming pool, and I thought to myself, "well isn't this weird, but nice." And I think that would be about my assessment of the Hotel as a whole. I haven't stayed here, and I haven't eaten here, but I have drunk here before, so that's the best of the three in so many ways. Back to what I was saying...The White Hart is a really nice, because it is genuinely old (16th century) and it is a proper hotel, so you feel snug and comfortable, yet it's also weird because you sense it's not as good as you could imagine it being, and perhaps it's a little faulty towers (e.g. the weird little radiator). It's a mix between Agatha Christie novels, and faulty towers, if you could imagine such a thing. But I like it.

It was here that he thrashed out the ideas that would later be put into stunning practise in the establishment of a democratic federation across the atlantic: The building deserves the blue plaque on its front identifying it as a seat of modern democracy. A tragedy then, that it has fallen into the hands of the very worst sort of parochial english bad-management. Indifferent, unloved staff. Limp, lampwarmed carvery. Imaginationless, depressingly dated menus... On one occasion - it's second chance - we were discourteously deposited in the main restaurant - the delightful view serving largely to accentuate the grimness of the chintzy conservatory and sub bernie inn dining room - where we attempted (eventually) to order from both the Carvery and Bar menus (both contained, incidentally, in the same padded leather folder). We were told in the textbook haut-french-accent of a seventies sitcom maitre d' that, in order to do so, we would have to move from our table in the empty restaurant to another in the empty bar. We moved to a table in another restaurant. There is so much that could be done here. A permanent exhibition on its history? A new 'colonial american' menu? Monthly 'revolutionary feast' evenings? A kitchen capable of meeting the expectations of its prices? Anything? It should be saved, someone should commandeer it and insist that it is.

They have rooms, and the only reason I could think that anyone would knowingly stay at a roadside hotel when so close to either Brighton or Lewes would be the price. I always assumed I would never end up in there, until the other day when an accident on the A27 had me sitting in stationary traffic right outside the Newmarket Inn. I decided to take the opportunity to see what it was actually like. Inside it is exactly as you would expect from the outside - it looks like a Harvester - with the the same sort of busy carpet and dark wood upholstered chairs, added decorative interest comes from a racing theme. There are racing jerseys depicted in coloured glass panels, and 'humorous' horse racing related quotes about the place written in a handwriting font. The menu has dishes such as gammon and chips, and steak for about £8. The lady who served me was very sweet, she must have had more customers that day than an entire regular weeks worth, as the only people in there were people nipping in off the road to use the loo and get a coke. It was a reasonably warm day so we sat in the garden, which is slightly ruined by the enormous calor gas tanks fenced round with wire, but it was better than baking in the car. Going in still hasn't solved the mystery for me as to who actually uses the place normally, and I shouldn't think I will ever go back unless a similar event drives me off the road, but it wasn't an unpleasant experience.

The surroundings of the hotel are fantastic, just near the beautiful village of Rottingdean and not too far at all from the seafront with fantastic views of the South Downs. The Hotel offers some really good rates and the rooms are extremely clean, tidy and comfortable. A single room with shared facilities are £30 but I'd go for the four-poster en-suite for £80 if you want to impress your fellow guest!

I haven't eaten anything here (although you can enjoy a cooked meal for around £6 and up) but it's not a bad place to look out over the downs and sup your wine or cask ale on a summer's afternoon. Nothing out of the ordinary, and the staff could be a little cheerier, but the building itself is beautiful.

My ploughman's was well done for £7 plenty of cheese and bread, a nice salad, including a clutch of pickled onions. I was told a story that the local church had a harvest festival meal there, but were told off for being too noisy. That sounds a bit harsh to me, but perhaps the parishioners were celebrating in unrestrained 18th century style?!
