Petro Canada - Lineup at the car wash

    Petro Canada

Noticed over the past few weeks this is one of the Petro Canada locations participating in nightly…read moreprice competition, selling between 4 & 7 cents bellow the going GTA rate. Night time price drops are becoming increasingly common in areas of Thornhill & Richmond Hill between Yonge & Leslie. Other recent hotspots include the corners Bayview/16th, Bayview/Major Mac, Shell on 16th/Leslie the areas of Yonge/Steeles & Yonge/Weldrick (most dependable). This particular station has a large capacity so you're almost never likely to wait for a pump, it has a good deal of driveway space around the pumps, and people going to the store have places to park with sufficient space away from entering/exiting traffic (unlike the poorly designed sibling on the Bayview/Hitech side). The vast majority of operators in the GTA hold the line of the same price so I think it's worthwhile for the consumer to keep a list of locations who offer small discounts from their own margins and reward them with increased sale volume whenever it practical to do so. It may be only $7-$9 a month but it's money I'd rather spend on some coffees or waffles.

On Saturday, I was running errands and noticed that the low fuel warning was lit on my dashboard. I was driving along highway 7 and recalled this station. I pulled in. I have visited this gas station a number of times over the years, but well before my time on Yelp. This place is just in front of a bunch of box stores, such as Winners and Staples. The downside is going eastbound along highway 7 and making a left turn to get to this Petro-Canada. There is a ton of traffic approaching in the opposite direction that it is a wait before you can carefully turn to pull into the station. I like that the bays are wide and that there are many. I had no problem finding an available pump. I filled up and paid at the pump. It was uneventful, but smooth. This station is clean. I was happy that my car's gas tank was full again. (89)

What is cool about this Esso gas station is that gas prices are decent. I'm guessing that it's mainly due to competition. There's a Petro-Canada that I have frequented a number of times across the street. It felt like a gas war happening at Bayview and 16th avenues. There were plenty of available gas pumps when I was here. I had no problem entering my phone number associated with my PC Optimum card, followed by paying with a credit card. Pumping gas was smooth. This gas station was clean and cheerful for a gloomy, rainy afternoon. This gas station has a car wash. It was doing swift business while it was spitting rain. It was nice to finally drop by this Esso. I've got some decent gas station options at this intersection. (133)

Heads up to drivers, Bayview & 16th is now the top hotspot for nightly gasoline price drops but…read morethis Esso and the Petro Canada across the street have gone a few cents bellow the others. I got $1.044/L when it was $1.104 at my other go-to stations and $1.159 everywhere in the 416. Since Thursday's 4c across the board price drop, they have maintained a -10c difference. Not sure how long this will last but if your business, leisure or Yelpwork will be taking you past the Bayview & 16th area I recommend trying to time your fill up to take advantage of the price difference and encourage the franchise operator to continue competing on price. (will post an update if I notice them fall back in line with the going rates.) Note that there is no proper access from the Bayview northbound lanes and access from westbound 16th requires a left very close to the intersection or a U turn to approach from the east, so those who are uncomfortable with abrupt & assertive turns may want to plan going past it and coming back around to approach form the east or the north.

Tips: - Collect PC Optimum points when you fuel your car…read more - This gas station has a Circle K with a built-in Tim Hortons. I commute to work between Mississauga and Markham. This distance is roughly 50 km. It's a good thing that I like to drive. The problem can be how horrific the congestion is to get to and from destinations. One positive is that when I need to fuel my car, I get a cross-section of gas prices as I cut through the greater Toronto area. Naturally, some areas have prices that are cheaper than others. A weird phenomenon is that as the day progresses, gas prices fall until midnight. When it's a new day, prices go up. I had dinner in Vaughan, which tends to have the best gas prices. Gas was going for 120.9 cents a litre, which was a lot better than when I commuted to work earlier in the day at 130.9 cents a litre. I was heading home. As I left Vaughan, gas prices started to creep up. 122.4. 124.3. 129.5. Ugh! I was in the left lane heading eastbound on Highway 7. I was stopped at a light and noticed this Esso station. Gas was at 120.9. It was time to fuel my car. I looked and it was safe to pull into the left turn lane and turn onto Thornhill Woods Drive. I then made a right turn into this gas station. I'd say that half the pumps had customers fuelling their vehicles. I parked next to an available gas pump and got out of the car. The forecast called for wind gusts. I felt them as approached the gas pump. I had a hoodie on. Thank goodness for the hood part that kept me warm! I entered my phone number associated with my PC Optimum card on the screen. You get a point for each dollar that you spend on gas. I then tapped my credit card to pay for the gas in advance. I then selected the gas that I wanted and had the pump do its thing. It was nice to have hands-free fuelling on such a windy evening. This gas station was clean and bright. I had some garbage to dispose of and found the garbage receptacle. This Esso has a Circle K convenience store with a Tim Hortons store inside. The former was nice. I went to check it out and bought a couple of drinks. I saw the donuts at Timmy's, but I didn't get anything. It was fairly dark by the time that I had completed fuelling my car. In front of me looked like an air pump that had a garbage bag over it. Behind it was a vacuum that looked like it was functional. I liked fuelling my car here for the first time. When I'm in the area and need gas for my car at a decent price, this gas station is a good one. (400)
