Instead, I was essentially told, "That's what they told me when I started working here." When I asked the manager for clarification, the response was essentially, "Because I said so." I even contacted corporate, and they gave me a different answer--that alcohol could be returned and literally did a Google search to tell me it could not be returned. However, my understanding is that California law does not categorically prohibit a retailer from accepting a return of unopened alcohol. I also contacted the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), which confirmed that licensed businesses can return alcoholic beverages to distributors under certain circumstances, such as when a business closes. At the end of the day, if the company has a policy prohibiting returns of unopened alcohol, that's their choice. But customers should be able to see or be directed to an actual written policy rather than being given "they told me" or "because I said so" as the explanation. The issue isn't necessarily the refusal to accept the return--it's the lack of transparency, knowledge, and professionalism when a reasonable customer asks a straightforward question. That experience told me quite a bit about the level of customer service and management at this location.
