What was once the Sanitorium is now a Shell gas station, and some small buildings behind the gas station. I have been told by a local resident that the houses behind the gas station were houses for attendents at the Sanitorium. She also said that the Sanitorium's main building was located behind the current location of the Shell gas station. As a kid, I had passed by this place several times, and never knew its significance. There is not much to see. There isn't even a historical marker. (I'm sure that in 500 years, just as today we would love to know where the exact death place of Ovid was, people will want to know where Faulkner died.) In the Shell Gas Station, there are some tables, where truckers on Highway 78 can eat a quick lunch of BBQ or fried chicken from the Chester's Fried in the store. It tastes pretty stale. But hopefully, you'll get a chance to sit at the tables there while you silently read Absalom, Absalom! or The Sound and the Fury or The Unvanquished in the Shell gas station called the Byhalia Gas Mart.

I saw the sign for Hickory Flat and thought we'd need to keep driving. I was thrilled to see Exxon listed on the last exit sign. The restroom was first on my list and it was very clean. Yay! When I first walked into the truck stop, I noticed there were a lot of people having breakfast or just coffee and hanging out with their retired friends. Assuming this is the only place in town. As always, I walked up and down the few aisles to see if there was anything I couldn't live without. I found my husband staring at the hot food display. So glad he was. They had what appeared to be blueberry biscuits. Just like Bojangles used to have. There are still Bojangles restaurants but not in our area. We bought one for each of us and after the first bite I knew that was a good call. If I'd have bought more, we would have polished off as many as there were. Good grief they were gooooood! So, if you are ever passing through Hickory Flat in the morning hours, stop and pick up a blueberry-honey biscuit. You won't be disappointed.
