So, sometimes you have an exceptional experience in an ultra-ordinary place.
I'm on a super long drive and staying in a crappy hotel off of I-75 and I just walked to this Shell Station to get some snacks. I was greeted by the presumed owner like I was a long lost relative with a hearty "Welcome!" and when I checked out, he cracked a little joke, asked me politely about my day, and said "please" and "thank you" at every possible turn. And then he asked if he could help carry my bag to my car (which held a 6-pack and two big waters, and I had other stuff in hand, so it was a totally appropriate but unexpected offer).
That is an extremely sharp contrast to the general disdain and annoyance I've encountered at the gas stations and convenience stores on my long route- about 20 hours at this point. And while I hold no grudges, and would, surely, be super annoyed myself in that job, that only supports my point of exceptionalism in the mundane. And if I someone else stops here, instead of across the street, as a result... then let's score one for kindness and good graces. read more
