Gas is usually higher here. And now they have TVs at the pump that play commercials non-stop.

Am I really giving a convenience store five stars??? Well, yes, I am. Why??? Because it's much more…read morethan a podunk convenience store with limited selection, high prices and lotto. Nope, the owners are friendly, the store is very clean, well-organized, and incredibly well-stocked. Seriously, it is more like a small neighborhood specialty grocery shop or market and calling it a convenience store is a tad bit an insult. Besides, it's the only game in town for a few miles unless you're willing to enter the crap store they have in downtown Gaines that supposedly passes for a grocery store or the old 7-11 in Swartz Creek. The food selection is pretty good here, the prices are competitive and the liquor and wine selection seems to be outstanding, including some of the more top shelf brands. It's great for filling out the bar for a party or weekend barbecue. As for the food, I've actually found a nice mixture of fresh snacks, light groceries, and health food. Nothing is expired, out of date, or caked in dust, unlike a few stores in the area that I could mention, but won't. There really aren't a lot of decent fast food spots nearby, which makes this place a great idea if you want to grab a quick sandwich, snack or salad while running errands or going back to the office. If you need to grab a lunch on the go or a few groceries for the weekend or some top shelf booze for a get-together, this is the place. Oh, and the staff is super nice and friendly!

Quite the displeasure…read more If I could actually get away with giving this place zero stars, (hello, I hate that phrase, but in this case, it rings true) then I would, because that's precisely what it deserves. This so-called local "food market" is not worth my time or money. Sorry, but I call it like I see it- disgusting, highly overpriced, poor/inadequate selection, and to top it off, all credit card transactions must be over $5! Over $5??? Whoa, did I suddenly transport myself back in time to 1984? I wasn't sure. Heck, even art vendors and guys selling duct tape wallets on the street let you pay with a credit card through their smartphone or Ipod touch with an Intuit card reader without a minimum tramsaction fee. Geez, get with the times. It's 2014, not 1984. To be specific, I had a horrible experience here. I walked in to pick up a few snacks because I happened to be in the Gaines area that day and noticed the place was rather dirty, with dust bunnies everywhere and items shelved haphazardly. Prices on the most banal of items were highly inflated, far and above traditional grocery store pricing. Honestly, the prices were so high they could have made a convenience store blush with embarrassment. I know that I sure as heck wasn't in Walmart. Man, never have I wanted to see a Walmart so bad in all my life (and I don't actually like Walmart!) After finding a few overpriced treats for my road trip, including the most expensive bottle of Starbucks frapuccino ever, I proceeded to the cash register to pay when suddenly the POS "owner" went off on my friend, Rick, and I for no reason. He treated me VERY rudely and then went on a tirade about God only knows what. He ranted about politics, local government affairs, his general opinion of society, the overly-entitled, etc. Hello, did he even notice that he was in his store, in front of paying customers? I suppose not. Maybe he does this a lot? It was beyond weird and completely classless. He also felt it necessary to respond to my private comment to Rick about the minimum credit card transaction fee. Oh yes, he went there! Was he polite about it (never mind that he wasn't minding his own business, which would have been the appropriate thing to do) when he chose to respond? Are you kidding me? No! This store is a dive and you should definitely avoid it at all costs! I wish I had. In short, there's nothing "super" about the Gaines Superette. I hope that a decent grocery store takes its place for the sake of the community. Unfortunately, there is nary another grocery store in sight.
