Every time I come here, the food is phenomenal. I especially love the cheese steak sandwich. I enjoy supporting a local business and have never had bad service while here. I rarely leave a negative review. In this case the 2 stars I have given were for the lovely decor of this beautiful building, and it's exterior, and excellent service from our server. I really cannot offer any stars at all based on the food we received. I had been looking forward to visiting Sheep's Creek Lodge for a while, based on the many excellent reviews I've read. We were on our way back from Talkeetna, and it happened to be lunchtime, so we stopped in. I was excited we were getting to eat here finally! I ordered a half Caesar Salad with Blackened Chicken, (It's a favourite of mine at the Beartooth Grill - theirs is out of this world yummy) husband ordered the Clam Chowder soup of the day (as it's Friday) and some Potstickers. The food came out fairly quickly. The chowder looked ok, but my salad looked unappetizing right from the outset. The Potstickers could have been Ling Ling for all i know. Upon digging into the salad, the situation got worse - the chicken was overcooked, dry, not at all juicy, and any Blackening Spices were almost undetectable - no real spice to it all. It was a pale orange in appearance, and not at all tasty. There were no knives in the cutlery pot on the table, so i had nothing to cut it with either. It was just really not pleasant. And my salad leaves - Romaine should be crispy, fresh and a bright green, these were limp, soggy, dark green, and well past their best. Not at all fresh to be honest, and when i lifted a leaf out of my salad, laid it on my finger, it draped limply like a wet green cloth. Very disappointing, and i left most of it. I can't digest salad leaves unless they're fresh. These did not look at all fresh, so i didn't take the chance. I said to my husband "Let me taste your chowder" expecting it to taste better than my salad. Unfortunately it was lukewarm, and lacking in seasoning. Lukewarm, tepid food makes me angry. I want it hot. He only ate half of it. The Potstickers were the nicest part of the meal, but based on my experience here today, i really don't know if they were the microwaveable variety. I don't know the reason why our experience differs so much from the reviews I've read, nor do i wish to speculate. But it was a very disappointing experience, that i don't want to repeat. read more

Almost 3 stars. Difficult to rate this place as it had both pros and cons. Pros: Full bar, friendly waitresses, clean bathroom (although it was out of hand towels). Specials board. Good sounding assortment of things on the menu. Cons: the food (I'll explain), cheap feeling tables, chairs and silverware. The silverware and napkins are already at the table in cups (sanitation issue). My dinner: I chose the penne pasta with parmesan sauce and blackened chicken. I liked that there were 3 freshly cooked chicken tenders atop the pasta. However the sauce tasted like warm plain heavy whipping cream. No parmesan taste, and the sauce was *wildly* under seasoned (it had no seasoning at all, not even salt or pepper). Atmosphere: No frills. Filled with taxidermy animal busts and pelts. Felt a little dive-y. Felt *very* local. This could be good or bad depending on your preference. This place has potential. Loved that there were fresh ingredients, just didn't like my dish. read more

The staff was friendly and attentive. The lodge atmosphere is super inviting, with animal heads and fur everywhere. The fireplace at the entrance is a nice touch. I like to judge new places on their burgers. I mean, burgers aren't hard to make well... if a kitchen can't put together a good burger, then it shouldn't be on the menu, right? I wasn't asked how I wanted the burger cooked, which is fine, as long as the burger doesn't come out cooked to hell and dry. Ordered mushrooms and blue cheese on it. Came out well done but still piping hot and moist. Bun appeared to be made in house. Nice and light but held up to the burger. Toppings provided were lettuce, pickle, and onion. I hate tomato on a burger, so that immediately made me happy. Potato salad for the side was delicious. Decent beer selection and a full bar. I'll be back. read more

Sheep Creek Lodge is one of the best things about this area close to Sheep Creek Landing . I always look forward to dining here .I highly recommend the Alaska cod sandwich and hand cut sweet potato fries . I had my sandwich grilled but they also have a deep fried option. Everything about this sandwich is good including the bun . They serve breakfast all day long and it's always good . There are a lot of different and very good items on the menu . I shared the homemade cobbler ( rhubarb and blueberry ) and the serving was large and delicious . I was impressed with the foot stomping live music and completely decked out for fun lawn area . How. How have I not reviewed this place? This is one of the many "locals" bars you pass if you explore the state of Alaska. They are a watering hole for locals, but they're much more than that. It's where the community hosts get togethers, fundraisers, contest, festivals, etc. (The odds are good they probably do something for Thanksgiving) The location of Sheep Creek is great. There's almost nowhere decent to eat between Talkeetna and Wasilla, except here. I like to stop by after a weekend up north, as I'm heading back south towards Anchorage. They have good food, a surprising tap selection, and friendly service. Stop on in next time you're blazing back towards town! read more

Well worth a stop if you are passing by. This was my lunch stop once a month when I was working in the area. I never had a bad meal, lots of times when menu items aren't available. A surprisingly delicious spot off the road near Talkeetna! Our waitress was entirely on top of things despite our huge party of 14 and kept all our coffees topped off. The fried cod sandwich is FANTASTIC with a perfect batter surrounding juicy fish. The jojos (potato wedges) were fried to perfection! Stopped here on our way back from up North. We had heard good things about it and decided to stop in. Waitress was very nice and prompt. Drinks stayed topped off while we waited for our food...for an hour and a half. Yes, it took an hour and a half to get our food. The food finally started arriving and one of the first dishes placed was a sandwich with onion rings. Sandwich was fine, onion rings were burnt black. And yet they still tried to serve them. Eventually got his onion rings and mine after they recooked them. The fish and chips, was almost burnt, extremely dark dark brown, not quite burnt but waaaay past when it should have been pulled from the oil. It also smelled extremely fishy. Tasted ok, but we had leftovers, and tossed them as soon as we got home because the entire truck smelled horribly fishy. Food is a -1 star, service was a 3. She was polite and prompt and the food wasn't her fault, trying to serve us burnt black food was her fault. She should have made them recook it the first time. We won't be back. Also they were out of all steaks, and halibut and cheese sticks. read more

Food and customer service are terrific. Alaska ambiance (BIG TIME) with a variety of well made American staple foods for those with a fishing/hiking/exploring inspired appetite. Appetizers, soup and salad, hearty and delicious lunches and full dinners are available, as well as delectable classic desserts. An impressive variety of spirits, beer and some wines are featured at the full service bar in addition to live entertainment when available. Though we live rather close (for this area I reckon) we have made Sheep Creek Lodge our personal favorite. P.S.: The Mushroom Burger with Swiss is my favorite! Chicken Fried Steak can't be beat, either! I have been going to this lodge since I can remember and now it has morphed into an AMAZING place to come and hang out when you are in the area...or even if you are not. The atmosphere is quite nice, cozy stove in the dining/bar area so you can warm right up in the winter after a snowmachine ride and freshly picked flowers in the summer!! The real gem here is actually the food!! The menu is pretty basic but they do all the items that are on it really well and the prices are FANTASTIC!! They have catered to the locals and I love that, so often lodges will out price the locals by charging an arm and a leg but not here!! And they have live music on some weekends. Okay so this place is phenomenal. Def worth a stop in leaving or coming from Talkeetna. Got the beer battered fish - super amazing and juicy! Love the crisp batter. The sauce they had with it was divine as well full of flavor. I still asked for malt because I love mixing as usual haha my husband and daughter got hamburgers and not a bite was left out of either. forewarning: they have a lot of mosquitos that come in & are by your food etc. They keep the doors open & all of the windows, which don't have screens. Management: we've never had an issue with mosquitos all in an establishment & the servers were not happy when we asked if we could shut the door/windows. only one other couple was in it. the food was very good...I just put 3 stars for the service. Traveling by in the middle of winter on snow covered roads and 5 degree temps made this beautiful lodge just that much more appealing. Needed lunch before dog sledding tour. Grand interior with a warmth of a log lodge. Great lunch of patty melt and a Reuben sandwich. Fantastic thick marble rye bread. Soup of the day was spicy Italian sausage, which warmed the soul on a day like today. A definite stop on the less travelled road. Highly recommended! read more

Recently stayed in an Air BnB near Sheep Creek Lodge and stopped in for a drink. Kyle the bartender was amazing and served delicious drinks. We came kinda late right before the kitchen closed at 9pm so we didn't eat but saw other really delicious looking plates or other patrons. So we went for dinner the next night and Kyle wasn't there but we had another very friendly waitress. She informed us because they are gonna be closed the next couple of days, and that it is Alaska, they were out of A LOT. No fish, steaks, or dessert. Sadly, that didn't leave too much left on the menu besides burgers and sandwiches or breakfast which we weren't feeling. We ordered the smoked brisket potato skins and although the brisket was alright the potato skins were over cooked and there was no real flavor so salt and pepper needed to be added to make it edible. Husband ordered the soup of the day, tortilla soup- no tortilla in the soup and was very watered down and just spicy but again SUPER bland. I ordered the kids chicken teriyaki which was 2 chicken tenders with a tiny bit of sauce and a cup of rice. It was edible but again so bland. Overall- I would probably only come back for the drinks and not the food. read more

My husband and i went here for a little snowy get away with our dog, what a treat. we stayed in one of the cabins in the dead of winter. -37 to be exact.. and had the best time! the people at the restaurant were just wonderful. the food was really good.. and the other customers there were a lot of fun. i highly recommend this place. it will always hold a special place in my heart. :) read more

Post-COVID: Decided to stop into a restaurant to eat (dine in) for the first time since AK really started allowing businesses and restaurants to reopen. I've been passing by Sheep Creek Lodge for years and always wanted to stop in for a bite to eat, so we decided one day to just run up the road for dinner. There were only a handful of patrons at the restaurant when we dropped by - likely because of COVID and the associated wariness the pandemic has generated with public places. Still, the staff at SCL were busy. It took quite some time to get our food, but it certainly was delicious. The apologetic waitress did a great job despite being the only server in SCL at this particular time. I don't think I would drive an hour and a half next time to patronize SCL, but would certainly drop in on my way north or south along the Parks Hwy. read more

We were on our way from Anchorage to Fairbanks. We left ANC at 1130am on a sunday with our 2 kids ages 19months and 8 years. The kids got hungry so we decided to make a stop. Tons of parking outside. Upon entering, they have a bar on the immediate left, a fireplace straight ahead, and an open restaurant on the right with an open seating bar. They also have an open deck with seating and some heaters but 30 degrees, Id rather sit inside. Lol. Bathrooms were clean. 2 stalls in each mens and womens. Water is cold! We ordered 2 kids meals: hot dogs with fries and a drink for $3.00 each I had a half caesar salad for $6.00 and 3bean soup cup for $3.50. Caesar salad was good. I love tons of dressing! 3 bean soup was okay. Bacon was burnt! Kids meals was great for the price. Staff service seemed a bit slow. Then again only 1 person was waiting and I saw 2 chefs in the back. All in all. Id come back again. Btw they have mini cabins in the back to sleep but I didnt ask the price. Great pit stop! The food was fantastic, service great and atmosphere warm and friendly. We were on a tour to Willow, where we were going to go on a dog sled ride and passing this restaurant, I couldn't help but hope we could stop here for lunch, which luckily we did. It was freezing out (around zero), so the toasty warm wood stove was just what I needed for a few minutes. After that, I was in need of a beer. My brother and I got some seasonal ambers then took a seat to order something fattening and hearty. Unable to make up our minds, we ordered a reuben and a chicken sandwich. One with a salad and one with fries. Both were very good and really hit the spot! Our bartender was very nice (from Portland, Oregon where we are from, which could be why conversation was so friendly) and our server was quick to take our order and bring us our food. I'm always impressed by a clean restaurant bathroom and this one was one of the cleanest I've seen in a while. Weird, but it sticks out as memorable. That may be because the men to women ratio is 5 to 1 so maybe a woman hadn't used it since it'd been cleaned. lol The stuffed animal heads (elk, deer, moose etc) aren't for everyone (ie Peta), but I think it adds a very woodsy, cabin-ish feel. As do the locals (who you can tell call this place their 'Cheers') and the giant carved brown bear out front. This is definitely the place to stop and eat when you are driving through. read more

Between Denali and Wasilla, there are limited sit-down dining options on the Parks Highway; we have found this to be a reliable stop when you need a break and a meal.
