I've been here a couple times and have always had a great experience! They have always answered the phone when I call, the person on the phone is always super helpful and sweet, and the stylists have been awesome. This is a small studio in Berry Hill that feels very cozy and home-y. It has a nice relaxing vibe to it--not a loud, stressful place where someone is trying to talk you into buying a bunch of products or services. It's quite literally a little neighborhood salon and I love it. Levi did my hair most recently. He is a doll and he did a great job! Highly recommend! read more

Hairwash DREAMS come true here! After my previous experience and review, the owner reached out with hopes that I could give them another shot. I am so happy that I did. Though Shay herself was not available, her associate Shelby Kay stepped in. Shelby Kay was such a delight to work with. I was immediately greeted with a welcoming smile and worked on right away. I had her full undivided attention during my entire service. The wash was thorough and relaxing. Shelby Kay provided me with the best hair wash EVER! Ugh, I can't even explain it, but I'll try. My scalp got the much-needed attention with the shampoo, conditioner, and the massage (not to mention my neck too!). As I lifted my head out from the sink, I felt lighter as if my tense muscles had washed down the drain with the shampoo. My goodness! You just have to go in and try it for yourself. My hair was clean, refreshed, and styled. I was super relaxed when I left and it was from the massage/wash and the ease of conversation. The environment and Shelby Kay herself had such a chill vibe. I had an appointment with a stylist who had a family emergency, they tried to call me to reschedule, but I'd mistyped my phone number and showed up at the salon anyway. They still welcomed me with a smile, offered me something to drink, and after a few minutes had rearranged their schedules to allow me to keep my original appointment time! I really enjoyed getting to know Shay and some of the other stylists. This salon has a great vibe. My experience was one of the best I've ever had. But that's not even the best part. The next day at work I got amazing reactions. This was just a haircut, but one guy even started calling me 'Milan' because my haircut suddenly made me look so 'hip and fashionable', no joke haha! I bought a groupon in hopes of finding a great hairstylist for a great price (at least for the first time) since I recently moved here and was in desperate need of a highlight and hair cut. I've been getting my hair cut and colored (blonde) for the last 12 years consistently and know what a great color and cut job look like on my head. I had a great experience with Jody (I think that's her name?) on the phone when booking my appointment and was excited because she was SO NICE! She booked me with Savita. From the moment I walked in, I felt like an inconvenience on this hairdressers day. She never even welcomed me to the establishment. Instead, she ranted about her life the entire time and made it clear that she was broke so I would make sure to tip her (which I was planning on already depending on service quality). Note to salon- Don't run groupons if your stylists are going to treat the Groupon holders like lower class inconveniences. This would have been a great opportunity to gain a client and referrals. I purchased the "full highlight" .. assuming that a full highlight meant my full head of hair would get highlighted.. apparently that means "30 foils" needless to say, not a FULL highlight because I have a FULL HEAD OF HAIR. My experience/service was unpleasant and the haircut and color mediocre. Will not be back and I wouldn't recommend it. read more

Two Groupons have inspired me to visit Shay's on two different occasions. The first appointment I was randomly scheduled with Carla, and the second I made sure to have Carla work on my hair again. The cuts she's given me have been great, and she helped pick out a great color for a one process dye job. The color's held up, and still looks great. I also really like how Carla has styled my hair upon leaving Shay's - she hasn't used an iron yet, just a round brush and blow dryer. The old fashioned way! If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And I've always walked out with beautiful looking hair. I feel that Shay's prices in general are a little steep. I think I can get a less expensive haircut somewhere like Elan in Green Hills, which I perceive as being a generally ritzier place (maybe because of location??). Anyhow, I plan on seeing Carla at Shay's when I can. FYI - There's at least one house dog at Shay's. The first time I visited, the dog was pink... seriously, pink. read more

I will only go to Shay's Studio Yesterday, I went to a hair appointment with my downstairs neighbor (to save a little bit of money) who does hair at an educational salon--Long story short, my neighbor is in beauty school, and my hair was orange! So I called my regular hairdresser, Shannon Brooks, immediately after getting my hair "done" at another salon where my hair turned out ORANGE. I told the receptionist, Lacey, I had a hair emergency and that "I [NEEDED] to talk to Shannon ASAP"--it was dire! Shannon was completely booked up, but she had asked me to go ahead and come in so she could assess the damage. After assessing the damage, she told me she probably wouldn't be able to get all the orange out this time. I had to do toner, a conditioning treatment (to save the integrity of my hair), and then high and low lights to blend the damage. I got there at 6:30pm and Shannon stayed until 10pm to work on (and fix) my hair. (That's three and a half hours she worked on my hair). She got so much of the orange out and blended my hair color that no one could notice except us. She literally worked a miracle; I thought for Christmas 2011 pictures I was going to have to dress up as BigBird. I still have another treatment to go on my hair before we can completely get out the last little tinge of orange; but for the most part, it is GONE!! Thank the Lord! --Err, Thank Shannon! If I would have just gone to Shay's Studio in the first place, I would have saved myself the money AND a whole lot of heartache. Carla cut my hair, so that was good. I left with less hair than I started with, and I suppose that was the ultimate goal. However, it only looked good for about a week, then it started getting kinda wonky. My bangs were uneven with several random thin clusters of curls poppin' out, and the sides of the bangs were trimmed in such a way as to cause a widow's peak look. The back was also uneven with random longer strands. Since I had a Groupon, it was totally worth it (cheap), but I won't be going back. Maybe Carla just had a bad day, so definitely go in and try one of the other ladies (the other reviews are positive about them). read more

Been going to Shay's for years to get hair cut and colored by Shannon who is the BEST in Nashville! Will never go anywhere else. Best at getting hair color perfect and looking totally natural! GOOD NEWS EVERYONE: she now has a stylist named Chantal who just put on eye lash extensions for me that are FABULOUS! She is so professional and very concerned with meeting the clients expectations. The space is cute - located in a converted house, much like the majority of businesses in the Berry Hill area. The salon itself is well-appointed and serene. I was taken back immediately, offered a glass of wine, and was treated to a scalp massage as my hair was washed. I asked Carla to clean up my layers and bring some life back into my hair, which hadn't been touched by a professional in six months. I was very happy with my cut and style but I didn't realize until long after I'd left that I never got the oil treatment, despite having mentioned during my booking and at my appointment that I had purchased the Groupon. I can't say enough good things about Shay's Studio and Shelby Kay, but I'm going to try. I moved to Nashville in 2015 and explored a few other salons before I discovered this gem. I was like Goldie Locks but in Music City. The first place was too hipster, the second was too "fresh outta hair school." The third was just right. (The third was Shay's Studio.) I went to see Shelby Kay with a legit halo of color around my head. It was bad. I wish I had a picture, but I avoided cameras at the time. So, Shelby listened to everything I had to say. I probably almost cried. I just knew I was unsatisfied, but Shelby took it like a champ. She talked me through what she was going to do, and she was honest with me about what to expect because I'd probably need a couple of appointments to correct the halo and maintain the integrity of my hair. Well, going on almost a year later, I LOVE MY HAIR. I would never consider going anywhere else. Shelby is a like my hair guardian angel - making me my best self. Sometimes I feel like she's looking at my head and envisioning protractors and angles and chemical compositions, but, really, isn't that exactly what we want? Someone who knows her stuff. Shelby knows her stuff! I'd trust her with everyone from my nana to my nieces. Honest to goodness, at my last appointment, Shelby showed me my hair after she was done, and I honestly couldn't believe it was me. I mean, look at those pictures. Wow. That hair looks perfect. The studio is nice and so are the stylists. However, coming out of my appointment today, I'm a little confused about what I paid for. I went in for a balayage color. Having never done balayage before, I didn't know what to expect, but I did my research and was expecting not to have any foils. I brought a lot of pictures with me to show what I wanted. I got about 20 foils put throughout my hair, and I think 2 different colors. However, it really doesn't look any different than when I went in. I didn't have bad color before necessarily, but I just don't see a difference that would warrant paying $85 (which includes a tip). Kind of disappointed. read more

I don't really do this sort of thing, but it is something that is really unbelievable to me. I have been getting my hair cut at Shay's Studios in Nashville now for about 2 yrs. It's a very clean, professional and family chic feeling salon when you walk in. All are friendly and professional. But I'm writing this because of a stylist there that has a record with me that I have never thought possible. What is is it you say? Well, and I know you will think I'm making this up, but not. I have been seeing Savita Michael now for almost 10 tears this coming Feb of 15, and she has YET to NOT, give me a perfect haircut and style!!! You gotta be thinking this can't be right, right?? Well, if you know me, and any of my friends, I'm pretty particular and demanding on my hair. Always have been, and always will be. I'm in professional sales with a large company and I need to have the right look. And, I have certain quirks about my hair, ie; how it grows out of my head, the cowlicks and such. So I like it nice and even, with the proper rounding on the head so I don't look odd. Savita has absolutely been able to figure my hair out, give me all those things needed to get it right, and she is batting 1000%!! I have never been to anyone in my life that has done this well! I truly TRY, to find a flaw in her cut so she can come down to earth with a reality check, but I can't!! She spends about an hour with me every visit, takes her time, and does just the best job of cutting and styling my hair I have ever had done in my life. I've followed her from three previous locations over the years and will be with her until she retires. I'm in my 50's so I've had a few haircuts in my life and all I can say is, if you want to have a fantastic cut, by a professional that KNOWS what she is doing and takes her time, please, please go see Savita Michael at Shay's Studio. New to Nashville and looking for a hairstylist, I found a GroupOn for Shay's Studio, read the reviews, and decided to give it a try. Upon arriving, people were friendly and welcoming. However, I ended up waiting 45 minutes! I had plans for my 1 day off work and felt that it was disrespectful of my time to keep me waiting that long. During that 45 minutes no one came to explain my wait or introduce themselves. Someone finally offered me a drink 45 minutes into my wait, yes I would like a cup of coffee to keep my impatience at ease. The hairdresser was apologetic for my wait and friendly while working in my hair. The atmosphere was nice. But my hair color faded after a month. read more

I should start by saying that I have NEVER posted a negative review (or any review for that matter) on a business before, but after this morning, I absolutely have to. I'm also posting anonymously because I'm actually afraid of what type of retaliation may come from this salon and stylist. I'm SHOCKED by the lack of respect and professionalism this salon and it's stylists (one in particular) have. Shocked is actually an understatement. We'll go with TERRIFIED instead. The extremely shady business practices going on here have not only put my personal information in jeopardy, but also the information of every single client at the salon I actually go to and am EXTREMELY loyal to. I have NEVER been to Shay's and I have NEVER met the stylist there named Chantel. Apparently, Chantel used to be employed by the salon I will always go to. This is where it gets scary- Somehow, either the salon or Chantel herself was able to access my email (at least), which is securely stored in my current salon's database. Somehow, they were able to breach the security and access emails of every client at the salon, (this is technically a FEDERAL crime!). This morning I was part of a MASS email, to what looks like every client of my current salon. Now, not only is it completely unprofessional and ILLEGAL, but it's simply bad business. Shay's claims (in the email I received this morning) to be rated Nashville's #1 salon for 2 years. In my opinion, Nashville's "#1 salon" should have no issues getting their own clients, however they need to randomly solicit clients from other salons? Very odd. I am very curious to know if this is just the act of Chantel, or if the salon management and owner know this is going on. BEWARE! Who knows what other salons this business solicits clients from. More importantly, this is the lack of respect they have for the PRIVACY of the general public, who knows what they do with their own clients' information. SO SCARY!! read more

I took a chance and went to Shay"s studio as a walk in. Savita has done my hair twice now. I can not give her enough stars. Both times I have been greeted promptly and was offered something to drink and a magazine. Savita takes her time and gives the best head massages when she washes your hair. I have never been so happy with my cut and color. She goes out of her way to make sure I am happy with her work. read more

I go to Kathleen at Shay's and I love her. I trust her completely and she understands that I want low maintenance color and style. If I come in with an idea for something new she'll tell me if it will work for me or not and not just give me what I think I want. I'm definitely a one stylist girl and Kathleen is it. Shannon is amazing!! I have blonde hair and had a bad highlight job that left my hair darker instead of lighter. I went to Shannon and she was able to make me blonde and happy again! She also updated my haircut and was very detail oriented. She even stayed late to make sure it was done right and that I left with a smile. She also did a great job waxing my brows. She truly knows her stuff, and is super sweet on top of it! I'm so glad I found her and this adorable salon. read more

I never have left a yelp review before. This will be my first. I got a keratherapy treatment and the website claimed it's anti-frizz and shine for 4-6 weeks. After I got the treatment and washed my hair it was literally still the same hair I went to the salon with. My frizz was still intact and nothing about my hair changed. I paid $65 for it and I called and asked if I could do another treatment since this one didn't do anything it claimed to do. I was told I couldn't not do a treatment of the SAME price and that if I did the treatment I was only allowed to do the Brazilian blow out for $120. They told me the $65 would go towards that and I would pay the remainder. That's ridiculous. I shouldn't be forced to buy a more expensive treatment if the treatment I paid for didn't do what it claimed to do. I should've been able to get another treatment at the same price not be forced to pay more and get a higher end treatment. They have a keratin express treatment for $65 so I asked for that as a replacement. I was still denied. I have been calling for 2 weeks back and forth to find a solution for this and they keep telling me to either call back or buy the Brazilian treatment for $120. That's unacceptable service. I would never recommend a place that values money over their customers satisfaction. read more

I sent in an email asking if there was any available times and was very happy with how quickly Shay responded and how accommodating she was! Everyone was super friendly, the salon was well-kept and there was even a boutique area where you could shop around! I bought a Groupon to get my hair cut, colored, and styled. I liked the atmosphere of Shay's, but unfortunately, I had a really bad experience. I left early so I would get there on time as I had never been before and wound up getting there 15 minutes early. I figured I would just read until my appointment, but the stylist came out and said we could go ahead and get started. She made a couple of unnecessarily rude comments about me being early that upset me a little bit, but I tried not to dwell on them so I just shrugged them off. I told her I wanted my hair colored a really bright, vibrant red. I showed her pictures of really coppery red hair and told her that I was ok with (and would almost prefer) a red that looked unnatural. She seemed to really get what I said, and I trusted her. While she was cutting my hair and putting the color in, she spent the entire time complaining. First she complained about how I had bought the Groupon. She said it lost her a lot of money and it really irritated me because I was planning on leaving a good tip. She went on and on about how much she hated the Groupon and said that next time I should just call and ask for a deal. Next she complained about her life. She complained about her money problems, she complained about her family, her friends, how much sleep she was getting. Then she turned it on me. She complained about my generation (I was 21 at the time). She complained about how lazy we are, about how all we do is text. I was pretty upset at this point because I have been working since I could and I've worked the entire time that I've been in college. I live on my own and I get very little financial help. But that is beside the point. The point is that she made a lot of rude comments and made a lot of assumptions about me and barely let me talk at all to defend myself. I told her a little story about my dad and she said, "No offense but your dad sounds really lazy." At this point, I was really annoyed but there wasn't a lot I could do with dye in my hair. By the time she started blowing my hair out, it had been about an hour and a half to two hours. The color was not what I asked for at all. It was a very dull brown/red. She looked at the clock while most of my hair was still wet and said she had another appointment so she would have to finish in the next five minutes. I was extremely frustrated by this point because I had an appointment to get my hair cut, colored, and styled. She finished blowing out my hair, straightened it a little bit, and sent me to the front desk. I've heard good things about Shay's, but I won't be going again because not only was the stylist rude, but she didn't do anything I asked her to. read more

I was booked with Carla in the salon over the weekend, and had a great experience. The location is very convenient in Berry Hill by 100 Oaks, in a sweet cottage made into a salon. There was plenty of parking. Carla was a sensitive stylist, describing what she recommended while listening to my input, as well as making conversation without being overbearing, and allowing me to go to la-la land as the cut progressed. I found out about Shay's Studio from a co-worker this past year when she bought a Groupon and made an appointment with Savita. She bragged on her every time she went and her hair looked amazing! Since we have the same type of hair, thick and natural curls and I have 2 cowlicks that has aways been a problem for me to style my hair, I finally went. I've always had trouble finding a stylist who didn't complain about my thick hair. Now my hair is easier to style because she has taken the time to find the best look for me, and I have forgotten I have cowlicks, their gone! Savita always greets me with a warm smile and a hug , her customer service is professional as well as the others in the salon.
