Comparing it to other local places, you can really get some good stuff at an affordable rate. Pizza starting at $10 for a cheese 18" pie cannot be beat anywhere. Originally it was Sal's but now it's just a spinoff. But quality is amazing. Third coffee counter is also something to check out. Smoothies, shakes, energy drinks, and of course coffee is a great value. Nice dining area also. The only downside is their restrooms are a total disaster. Nastiest place to go. I don't know why they don't teach people how to clean the restrooms. They have so much staff there it's insane. I've never seen any other chain grocery store with that many people on staff at one time. Train them to take a turn to get that restroom in shape. Management should be totally embarrassed.

He said nothing, stopped stocking, crossed his arms, and left his cart right where it was forcing me to reach over and in to get what I needed. If had rolled the cart about 6 inches or even offered to get what I needed, he would have done a great service. Unfortunately, he opted for acting all bothered and disgruntled. This is not the first time I've encountered extreme rudeness from employees while stocking shelves, and I'm sick of it. Market Basket, wake up and pay attention to your employees' attitudes. Do they not get paid enough to care?

Staff always call out and the managers solution is to make other staff work 6 days a week. The staff seem miserable, nobody knows where anything is when you ask for help, they act offended like you don't at them. It's not very clean, products are often not stocked properly so you have to ask to check the back. The people running the front where the registers are act extremely unprofessional, there have been times they've been throwing things back and forth while customers were around. All the decent staff seem to have left, now all that's left are people who can't communicate properly or do a poor job at what they're supposed to be doing. More times than I can count, my bags have ripped because the baggers don't pay attention to what they're doing and I've lost stuff from breaking when the bags rip open. The produce is hit or miss, often going bad or covered in mold, like the strawberries. One time I went through six containers trying to find one that wasn't covered in white fuzzy mold, and eventually gave up. The company slogan used to be ", focusing on friendly" when you looked at the name tags, but it feels very very far from that nowadays. If I wanted miserable workers and a sub-par experience, I could just drive down the street to the dollar store. Overall, negative 3 stars out of 10. Not sure who runs it, but it's a far cry from functional.

Even when the staff bags my groceries they are so nice. Yeah, maybe Market Basket has wider variety and cheaper items but if you don't want to be fighting a madhouse on a busy day, and appreciate a more small-town, personal touch , definitely I would recommend coming in here. The meat dept has set aside things for me if I call ahead for an urgent need, the seafood dept has pointed me to items in their frozen case if they think I could get a better economical deal. I recently used their catering over the holidays and they couldn't be nicer - got a personal call to go through the order instead of someone telling "just fill it out online" (Whole Foods). An earlier review asked why would people come here if it's usually more expensive, my answer is: if you have the ability to support businesses like this where there is heart in customer service - that adds to the sense of a small town community and makes you feel good about living nearby. Donelans also is a big supporter of school children including Girl Scouts - which is another great thing about them. It is usually not crazy busy and a more peaceful experience (not noisy like other stores). I am 100% okay with spending more money if it goes to a local business and thus gets invested back into our local community, but the products need to at least be up to par and that's not the case here, unfortunately. I know from experience they have low quality and expiring items on the shelves. I can't say I've ever experienced any containers having been opened after buying them, but other reviews saying that here is incredibly disturbing to me if they are being truthful. I've just never personally seen it, but then again, I don't make a habit of going here. I know there are expired products, I've seen them, and a little birdie told me that the counter that serves up fresh meat had chicken in stock that was 2 weeks out of date and had turned green. Among the people I know, I call this "the green chicken story." The employees are nice or at least do their jobs properly. Some people on here complained about cashiers not being friendly or talkative, but I've not experienced that first of all, and second of all, cashiers and service workers aren't there to be your friends. They are there to pack your bags and tell you the price. You want friends? Find a hobby group or see what the local library has to offer, instead of complaining about how the cashiers didn't become your instant best friend. Stop acting so entitled, I hate that attitude. Though the business owners are nice people from everything I've heard about them, being nice doesn't mean you know how to run a business, and it also clearly doesn't mean you replace expired products fast enough, either. I get running a store or a small business is hard, but this place needs vast improvements. I don't take any pleasure in writing a negative review for a small business of any kind, let alone a small business in my local community. But the truth is the truth and being a small business in my local community doesn't make you immune to criticism when your products are not only subpar but sometimes dangerous.

However, what shouldn't be sacrificed is the quality of goods sold. That should always be maintained for health and safety reasons. Since this location has last sold, everything has gone downhill fast. They were sold an old building, sure repairs were in order, large systems to repair-but I'm still seeing carpets to cover the floor where tile have been missing for 6+ years. The "curb appeal" is getting to be that of a city liquor store in a quant country town. It appears the shift to sell liquor is more profitable than maintaining the market portion of the business that's been there forever
