I rather give no stars for customer service in deli. if a customer says what they would like to buy in a friendly tone and pointing to the meat to slice and associate look at you and answer with a attitude then I'm not waiting. The associate needs a retrain in customer service to greet people or help. Discriminatory practices in Burlington, Vermont? After a hike with my friend, we stopped to pick up some groceries at our local Shaw's here in Burlington Vermont (store #7517). I purchased my items first and stepped aside so she could make her purchase in private. A few minutes later, my friend walked away from the register without her groceries. I could immediately tell that something was wrong and said to her "I got this." I paid for the groceries and she started to explain what happened as we walked away from the register. She was denied her groceries due to, according to the cashier, not providing ID with her personal check. That being said, she has used checks at this outlet before; she is in their "system." Accordingly, the bagger had intimated to the cashier that an ID is not required for a customer already in the system; the bagger indicated to the cashier how to bypass that step of the purchasing process. The cashier refused to do this and the bagger walked away in apparent frustration. My friend also stated that she had never been required to produce an ID with a check payment under $20. After hearing my friend's account, I went to customer service to inquire about Shaw's policy as it pertains to purchase with check. I was told by managers (plural) that "random ID checks are OK." I've shopped at Shaw's umpteen times and have never once seen a customer paying with personal check asked to produce an ID. I relayed this and that I knew that customers, once registered, were not required to produce ID with every purchase. To this, the managers had little to say. I followed this with a request that they cite the specific policy, but they were unwilling to do so. At that point, we left the store. Oh, did I mention that my friend's black? Even if what transpired does not amount to a willful act of discrimination -- which I doubt -- it would still not be a minor transgression. Racial prejudice must be called out immediately and stamped out before it grows. It is my sincere hope that Shaw's or their parent company gets wind of this review and decides to research how they might prevent these embarrassing and discriminatory encounters. read more

I have been coming to Shaw's a lot lately since I work close by. I typically come for the hot or salad bar but often stop in after work to pick up ingredients for dinner. I've been enjoying their wild caught salmon (especially the mango marinated ones) and browsing the BOGO meat section. The only down side is the check out lines are always long and if I come in a little late for lunch, their salad bar isn't always replenished. I'm scrapping my former review and starting over. I shopped at Shaw's routinely for the last 4 plus years. Little things about the store bothered me but overall, I had a nice routine there. I knew where things were, the store was generally quiet, and the staff was nice. I was willing to overlook a few things as nothing is perfect. I've done my weekly shopping there for the last time. They've redone the store and it has become a disaster. See below. 1. The deli is awful. The deli workers move in slow motion and generally seem inept. My meat is always sliced thick and I always have to wait longer than I should for service regardless of how many people are in front of me. I don't mind waiting my turn but when I ask for turkey I expect you to know what it is and not search around for it as if I just ordered ostrich. 2. I haven't figured out the bakery yet. I think they stock the bakery with models of what the bagels, muffins, and cakes are supposed to look like and I have no idea how to get these items fresh. The bagels, for example, are always hard no matter what time I visit the store to buy them. 3. The produce is embarrassingly bad. I don't see how Shaw's even has the gumption to put some of this out. More often than not, the produce's expiration date is happening right in front of my eyes. I've seen actual rotten food on the shelves of the produce department. I challenge anyone to find a decent green pepper at Shaw's. 4. They pulled the best feature of Shaw's, namely the self-check lane. I sort of get this even though I love the self-check lane. I often run in here to get something quickly and the self-check lane gets me out the door in a blink. I understand that people are always jamming up these machines but the one person assigned to watch the four registers usually did a good job of unjamming them. Now, they have four express lanes and the same one person attending them. I actually got out of the store more quickly by going through the regular lines behind people doing full-fledged shopping than I would have if I had gone through the express. If you are going to make the staff check out express shoppers at least make sure there is enough staff to do so. 5. All of the corporate changes seemed to chase the nice staff out the door minus one or two people. I am glad there is an effort to get the staff to interact with the customers more but the obligatory and monotone, "did you find everything you need" followed by silence does not put me at ease. I'm actually thankful to bag my own groceries at this point so that I have something to do to pass the time while my groceries are being rung. Recent trips to Shaw's has seen me buy food that did not make it home thanks to these employees who clearly dislike their jobs. I could go on but then my review would be too long. Besides, I now have to use my time to find another grocery store to use. read more

Gave them a fair shot now for the two years I've lived here. Today was the last straw. Both of the Shaw's are absolutely terrible. Employees range from indifferent to rude. For too many of them, customer service and a smile appears impossible. The one exception is at the Osco pharmacies at the stores. On more than one occasion stockers have given me and on separate occasions my significant other grief for trying to access items that they or their carts were blocking. I have walked past a pallet of unattended thawing frozen goods on more than one occasion and have had bad experiences with frozen produce from these stores. Things that were obviously melted and refrozen. The clerks are also rude and indifferent. Today a clerk started with a DMV style mono-tone: "Did you find everything ok?" I smiled anyway and exclaimed that I had. Thirty seconds later, I saw the groceries getting crushed at the end of the pipeline there and intervened to save my soft produce and bags of chips from popping and squishing from the boxes of soda and seltzer she shoved to the end. I proceeded to finish all of the bagging. While bagging, she shouted the price "$78.41 sir!" and I hopped to her implied order to swipe my card. When I finished, paying and bagging, she droned, while looking off into space "Have a nice day" not acknowledge or thanking me for bagging my 5 bags of groceries myself. I asked if I had earned any of the little green stamps so that I could give them to the customer behind me, an elderly lady who I'd asked if she collected them and said she'd gladly take mine. The cashier didn't give me my stamps but acted like she already had which was very strange. In the end she reluctantly re-opened her drawer and counted out the 5 stamps and handed them to me. At best Shaw's employee culture is inept, lazy and grouchy at worst they are deceitful and hateful. So disappointed in these stores. We're sticking to City Market, TJs and Amazon.com for the things the other two don't have. This sort of issue usually starts with management when it is this widespread. read more

Shaw's is my go-to supermarket because it's the best of both worlds. Instead of having to choose between a supermarket that sells the healthy/organic type stuff or one that sells the normal/cheap stuff, you can go to Shaw's and get great selection and decent prices on both. Make sure to sign up for the free Shaw's card and get tons of deals on all sorts of stuff all the time. My favorite is that there's almost always some sweet deals on fish, which can get pretty expensive in other parts of our landlocked state :) read more

I used to shop there, and their food variety is greater than other supermarkets in the area. I stopped shopping there once they removed the self check out lanes. I don't know why they did it, maybe loss prevention, but whatever, all the other supermarkets have self check out, so I shop at those places read more

This grocery store is near my workplace and I often stop here on my way home. Recently I've been frequenting other grocery chains instead of Shaw's, because: 1. A few times when I've shopped here recently an employee has insisted that I need to show my driver's license in order to use a credit card. I'm concerned that the employees might be collecting information to use for identity theft purposes. I've shopped at this store for years, have never had to show an ID until recently, and there's no reason this should be necessary. Other stores don't do this. 2. The restrooms are literally falling apart. I don't mean minor, temporary maintenance issues. I mean one of the toilets is falling off the wall, some of the floor tiles are completely loose, to the point that they're not connected at all to anything, and just lying on the floor, so you trip over them, and one of the faucets is completely disconnected from the sink and just lying on top of it. 3. If you go through the checkouts during the evening hours when the sun is going down, the sun is directly in your eyes and you can't see anything - and neither can any of the cashiers. They scan things wrong, push the wrong cash register icons, and read the instructions and totals wrong, because they can't see. This store needs to invest in some black-out shades that they can pull down over the high windows when the sun is going down. Blinding their staff and customers for an hour every day is not an acceptable practice. read more

If I could give NEGATIVE stars I would. They put EXPIRED food on sale for people to buy and eat. I bought cookies because they were on sale and they were expired by TWO months! Absolutely DISGUSTING. They take WEEKS to restock items, I've gone in every week for a few weeks to check if they restocked the item and they didn't. WORST grocery store ever! Seems like there's only 3 people who work there. And they're rude! DO NOT GO HERE! This store should be shut down. read more

Though not as flashy as the "newly Renovated Price Chopper" or Market 32 or whatever absurd attempt at rebranding they are making, Shaw's is a fabulous grocery store. They have everything organized in a way that makes sense. They are not slowed by dumb self-checkout lines. Their wine section RULES with choices galore. They do not lie about having cannolis. I have had so much more success with this store than Price Chopper, which is a massive disappointment time and time again. They also have a great gluten-free and all natural section! read more

Big store with wide isles, pretty much every brand you can think of is in this store. The beer selection is good and they even have singles in the chilled section. Most of the time the deals are pretty good, the prices i find overall are cheaper than the store across the street, the deli has loads of salads to choose from, and you can get a foot long sandwich made for 5.00 from the deli. read more

This Shaw's has the worst customer service of any grocery store around here. The staff are all miserable and rude, the produce consistently has empty spots, and the hot bar is a joke. The only good things here are that the sales are good, the location is convenient to my house, and the pharmacy staff are super friendly. I don't know why I went back to Shaw's. Every time I get mad about the lack oF registers open. 5:45pm on Wed. November 20; 5 people with small baskets looking for an express lane. None. We all get on lines behind people with large orders and wait. Then a staff person comes along all chipper and asks if we're shopping for dinner and wants to chat with the people waiting. The people at the deli, for the most part, are inept. It usually takes a long time to get service and I always come away with thick slices of meat despite ordering #1 thickness. The produce is even worse. Food is literally rotting on the shelves. I've seen produce with rotten spots that have been turned over to hide the defect. The fresh bakery is anything but, unless, I'm assuming, one visits first thing in the morning. By noon, the rolls and bagels are hard enough to damage a window. read more

What happened to my neighborhood grocer? The lines are so long, now that they've gotten rid of self-check out registers. But mainly what it seems to be is staff. It feels like everyone is moving in slow motion! And the baskets are always piled up at the registers instead of being brought back to the entrances. There's an obvious lack of management it seems. This store is insanely huge. I don't shop here often. It's typically more of a stop over for specific items if I'm in the area. The size of the place is a bit intimidating as finding things can be a bit of a chore. You'll get a good workout wheeling a cart from one end to the other. Selection is good, as you'd imagine. The staff isn't all that friendly, they seem just as tired of the place as I am. Don't expect to see many baggers at checkout (this seems to be a Shaws thing, do more with less people). Yes that is a good grocery store, I usually buy my meat there and some fish. By far I prefer Shaw's fish food department. Today they had fresh King Salmon from Alaska. I must be a glutton for punishment. I am not sure why I keep returning and thinking it will get better. After today, I realize I need to find a new grocery store to LOVE. As I entered the store at 9:00 a.m. 9/3/18 on a Sunday morning, there wasn't one single grocery cart (except the powered handicap) in the entryway. Where the carts would be was so much trash, paper cups, cans, bags. It was just gross! I had to walk to the other side of the store at the exit and obtain a cart there where they were almost depleted as well. On my way back in, I told the cashier that the entrance had no carts. She snubbed me and walked away. The store has taken a dirty turn, I mean as far as cleanliness. Items on the shelf are so dusty, the floors need serious mopping. I was over in the meat seafood section and grabbed some Louis Kemps Chunk Crab Delight. There was about 30 packages and 95% of them had expired on August 13th!!!!! Today is September 2nd!!!! I brought it to someone's attention and nicely told her that should someone not be checking the dates, they are going to eat expired seafood and that I just wanted to let her know. She copped an attitude and said, "I'll let someone know". I headed to get some coffee creamer and I couldn't find one with a date that didn't expire in two days. I had enough and was tempted to leave my cart there but I didn't. Today was my last visit EVER!!!! read more

I just purchased rancid chicken at shares and it was the 3rd tome in the last two months. While the store manager was indifferent, the very disturbing issue was that he did not think the chicken was rancid. If the management of the store does not have the simple ability to spot spoiled food, they will sicken many people. Everything is overpriced and the employees are stuck up. Normally I shop at Price Chopper, but one day I thought that I'd check out Shaw's seeing as I drive by a lot and never once went in. I bought a few things, along with a case of PBR and a 12 pack of some craft beer (of which was marked up a good amount) and the cashier kept me there for 10 minutes because they had to "photocopy my ID in case any parties get busted" - exact quote from the cashier. I don't understand how my ID along with the beer I can legally purchase and drink has anything to do with parties getting busted. I don't want to be associated with that either. Many people along with myself line up at Pearl Street Liquors and Price Chopper with carts full of beer and liquor on a Saturday night, never once were my or any of their ID's photocopied. Last time I checked, it's not illegal to stock up on alcohol for the weekend if you're of legal drinking age. If anything it's smart and will save you money. Not only was I held up, but other people in the line were as well. The stuck up 17-year old cashier then proceeded give me an attitude the whole time like I was doing something wrong and he was going to save the day by "catching me". Horrible customer service. Store manager wasn't on duty at the time I was there, definitely paying a visit later this week. I want the photocopy of my ID destroyed. Last thing I need is some fabricated underage drinking charge courtesy of Shaw's Grocery. Long story short - if you want the best prices and don't want to be harassed when buying alcohol, head across the street to Price Chopper. Nothing but good experiences there. read more

The salad bar gets full points: the greens look (and taste) fresh and crisp (bonus: sprouted beans and peas!), the berries are probably thawed--they're tellingly squishy--but there's a good assortment, and the tuna was as tasty as the canned wild caught; for $5.99/lb., it was a bargain of a lunch. Hot bar items were fine, and prices seemed reasonable throughout. A nice, unexceptional supermarket with an unusually well-stocked and invitingly priced salad bar. read more

Shaws isnt always the worst when it comes to customer experience, but theyre most certainly not the best. Most days the staff on register are friendly enough to ask how youre doing and maybe make a little small talk, but i was surprised that on a busy New Years Day the CSR (customer service rep) running the express lane register was terribly unwelcoming. On top of not receiving and greeting when coming through the line, the CSR moved very slow and seemed incredibly unenthused. It just felt very awkward and uncomfortable as my groceries were rung up. Also there were so few registers open with long lines on a busy day and when i got home i realized that the bread that i purchased had a sell by date of the 31st (the day before) and was incredibly soft and gross. When i returned later that day to exchange the bread i was allowed to do so without an issue but i found two more bags of the same bread with the same expiration date and brought the fact to the attention of the two staff members at the customer service desk. Just an overall crappy experience in general. Its not always that bad at this particular Shaws store but it was bad enough this time to make me want to write a review because i was pretty frustrated.
