Antiques on High has the proper smell of old things and has an interesting range of antiques. Rather than focusing on big pieces of furniture, which so many antique shops do, it uses its space wisely to host: Jewellery, books, records, clothes, ornaments, pictures, maps and various collectables. The condition of the goods varies, but they're priced fairly reasonably. I find it's best to go in without the aim of buying something in particular, but just to browse. I can't say anything has ever caught my eye enough to want to buy it, but I've seen plenty of other people who have found the perfect addition to their home or the ideal gift. The best bit is the craft section, where there's a gallery of jewellery, leather, pottery, glass and art in general, all produced locally and all promising to be valuable antiques in the future. There's a great range in here and you can get something for less than a pound or spend hundreds of pounds. Equally, you can pop in for a few minutes or spend hours browsing - it's almost like a mini museum. If you like antique shops, this won't disappoint; if you've never been in one, try approaching it. Don't be put off by the prison-like bars in the windows; the staff are friendly and it's a different world inside.

The shop pieces are mostly better for women than men, unless you're looking for nice blazer, jacket, or costume. There are quite a few nice menswear pieces in there. And if you have a specific style in mind, for example, a nice tweed, the the owner lady definitely has some kind of mental catalog of her stock. So if you feel overwhelmed, she can pick some stuff out for you if she has an idea of what you're looking for. Prices aren't the cheapest, but this place is a treasure trove of vintage one-offs if that means any added value to you. Also, no price tags. She prices items as you ask her. Tucked away down Green Street, it often goes unnoticed by the general throng of shoppers but make sure you pay it a visit. The volunteers are friendly and helpful, and always up for a chinwag. Not only is there a great range of clothes and accessories on sale here, but also a good selection of books and music too. Don't forget - whatever you buy here will go to a superb cause. Their window displays are always well thought out and attractive. My favourite time of year to walk past BHF is Valentine's Day, when people have paid to put their declarations of love in the window. We went to get a 70s shirt for my husband for our wedding, and came out with three! I thought I would be horrendously expensive, and it isn't. The range of clothes is simply wonderful. It's everything you ever remember, and quite a bit you don't (dare I say that it even includes some stuff you'd wish to forget, lol!). Browsing here is uplifting. I just have to lose some weight so I can buy some of the best stuff. I could even have got my wedding dress here - would have been 'different' anyway. I disagree with Alice, one of the things that makes this shop so special is that they don't seem to have experts who evaluate the clothes. Everything you see (and I must admit, there is a lot of rubbish) will only set you back two quid, and that includes the odd designer item which occasionally finds its way onto the clothes rack. They are very dog-friendly too. I sometimes feel a bit embarassed if I walk out without having bought anything, knowing that my furry friend has just been fed a whole week's worth of treats! :)

But for the dedicatedly thrifty amongst us the prices are dirt cheap - all books are 50p for example and clothes much the same. Make a few trips, have a good rummage, and you're sure to find a bargain you'll be proud of. Well, eventually. One of Brighton's hot spots it may not be, but I feel strangely fond of The Friends Shop. It recalls those days of yesteryear before charity shops were popularized by magazines and celebrities, and thus anything vaguely nice always ransacked by an earlier bargain hunter. The shop has the most colourful display window I have ever seen and a mountain of cuddly toys at the front of the shop ensures that mothers will be dragged in by their children. Most charity shops have racks of clothes to browse but this charity shop makes the whole process so much easier. The shop is divided into colours -an orange rack, a green rack, a yellow rack etc. Shirts, trousers, skirts and dresses of the same colour are held together which is extremely useful, especially if looking for a particular colour for fancy dress or for a top to match your new shoes. I definitely recommend this brilliant rainbow shop!
