My first contact with them was over the phone - they were very "can-do", positive and professional so I took one seat cushion and one back cushion in for their thoughts, cost and timeline. Their place of business is a workshop with lots of jobs in progress. Although they seemed incredibly busy the turnaround time for ordering the leather and cutting/sewing all 10 cushions was super-fast (under 3 weeks). Their cost was quite reasonable and the quality of their work was 100%. Bonus points: the employees all wear their masks, and wear them properly. We went to the Wardell showroom and something immediately stuck me. In the work area were several…read morepeople working on furniture. What struck me is - these people are artisans. They were focused, applying fine details, and invested in their work. It was really beautiful to see. However, that beauty broke down fast. My wife and I had made an appointment to select fabric for our sofas. We got there and met with Kenny. Kenny showed us how to use the fabric books and told us to begin reviewing. I ask if this he was going to assist us - we had sent him photos of our sofas, he had provided a detailed bid, this is not our craft, we desired assistance. Kenny said, no. He told us to go through the books, if we find something we like, bring it to his attention. The reason we had to bring it to his attention, he had to make a call to see if the fabric was still being made. You see, some of these books were old, very old. So, not have any clue what we were doing, we started looking through books of fabric. I saw one fabric type I liked but it was more expensive than the cost Kenny used in our bid. My wife was concerned about the price increase, so I asked Kenny if he could recalculate the bid cost based upon the price of the fabric. Kenny told me no; he told me to finish selecting our fabrics and then he will come to our house to provide a final detailed bid. Frankly, I was shocked. I was ready to walk out the door, but my wife found a fabric she liked. So, we asked Kenny about the fabric she liked. He found out the fabric is not made anymore. Regardless, my wife was inspired, so we went through every book in there. It was disgusting. They hadn't cleaned this area in who knows how long. Dust was everywhere; dust was in my nose, on my skin, on my clothes - thick nasty dust, it was horrible. Regardless, there were a couple fabrics my wife liked so we brought a couple books home with us. The first thing I did when we got home was to clean those books, take a shower, and put my clothes in the wash. We took a couple days looking at the fabrics at home, but I had scheduled time with a competitor because of the unsavory experience at Wardell. Some of the materials Wardell sent us home with were not too bad, but I wanted to see what Markell could do. We visited Markell and Angela greeted us. She had the images of our sofas we sent her, she asked us a few questions, sat us down at a table, and began retrieving fabric books with us. The books were organized, everything was clean, and the books were not old as dirt. Angela showed us options, asked our opinions, and helped us narrow in on the types of fabrics to match our vision. She offered ideas and backed that up by grabbing more fabric samples. Within a couple hours, we had a very clear vision of how we want to proceed. We still were not 100% sure of the direction we were going to proceed, but about a week or so after having visited Wardell, I received a voice message from Kenny. He basically said he hadn't heard from us and wants the sample books back "ASAP". Well, that was enough for me. This man doesn't care about us or our business. I did exactly what he asked, I returned those sample books ASAP and walked away thrilled I would never have to deal with that unkempt museum of forgotten fabric ever again. Wardell made us feel as if they don't care about our business. I am not 100% sure the reason I feel it important to say, "shame on you". I am not sure I should say it because they think it is OK that clients should rummage through a fabric book room that they obviously haven't bothered cleaning in years, maybe decades, or because their completely unprofessional front-office demeanor potentially risks the livelihood of those amazing artisans working in the back. Either way, I am glad we found Markell, I am glad there is a viable alternative to Wardell. There is an old saying in retail, which I think applies here very well - "Business would be great, if it weren't for those pesky customers."

Tom, that's what I want! Tom got his feelings hurt when Walden asked for their sample books to be returned... after a week. Of course they want them back, and a week is too long to retain their sales materials. No, they likely don't have enough catalogs for everyone to keep as long as they want. Tom became critical, even nasty in his review. If the front office had been so unprofessional, why did you take the catalogs home? Your superficial harsh review reveals your entitled, spiteful character. Shame on you Tom for trying to hurt a business with which you have never even done business. Most businesses would be pleased to know they dodged a "pesky customer" like you. I'll take "...these people are artisans. They were focused, applying fine details, and invested in their work. It was really beautiful to see", along with a little dust any day of the week. I'm going to check them out and I'll update my review.
