    Hy-Vee - Outside of Hy-Vee

    Hy-Vee

I'm a little surprised to find myself giving a Hy-Vee a four star rating in 2025 to be honest. Over…read morethe years my opinion on Hy-Vee in general has gone somewhat downhill for a variety of reasons, but my biggest quip is that it's just super expensive for no reason. That is actually still the case at this location in Manhattan, KS, but it's still an above average Hy-Vee, and I'll get to that soon. The first thing you'll notice at this Hy-Vee is that it's large, it appears to be fairly new, or at least very well maintained, but it looks like any old Hy-Vee from the outside. We stopped here as my mother in law lives in Manhattan and we were on the hunt for a veggie tray to take to our family Christmas. We walked in and despite living near a big modern Hy-Vee in Overland Park, this one really puts ours to shame in terms of feeling updated and fresh. We found the veggie trays and they were all beautifully put together and fresh. The thing that was terribly upsetting? They were also $25. With no other options we purchased it at that price. I was wondering if veggie trays are just this expensive now, and for the record, I went grocery shopping at Costco and Whole Foods in the KC metro the next week and found veggie trays at Costco to be around $10 and believe it or not veggie trays at WHOLE FOODS to be around $12 - so less than half their counterpart at a central Kansas Hy-Vee. Honestly stunning. Aside from the prices this is an excellent grocery store. If I lived here I'd likely return as they had way more prepared foods than ours does, and it seemed well stocked with fresh produce. They also still had self checkout which I love.

Sue is the best florist I've ever met, also amazing Chinese food. Major thanks and sorry for saying…read morethe flowers were too expensive!

Ray's Apple Market - My favorite is usually found here

    Ray's Apple Market

One star because working at rays apple Market in cg used to be a blessing. I used to thoroughly…read moreenjoy working there and meeting customers and coworkers. But as time went on and management changed lots of other behaviors either got worse or didn't change at all. Being upset about being short staffed is understandable but what I will never understand is grown adults being completely irrationally rude to minors or young adults or anyone else that were too call in or want to have a set schedule. The gm will over the intercom embarrass employees that call in that day(the ones he doesnt like). He will be rude and all over you for not following a simple rule like looking normal for customers. But yet let other rule breakers slide, like actually filthy, smelly, fat, people that pick their noses and then touch groceries. He'll let them work there with no problem but someone has to hide her face over small pieces of jewelry. Part of working there is being respectful, professional, clean, happy and whatnot. But majority of workers sit there and talk badly on people, they don't care who it's in front of either! They have no respect, and they are not happy, at least a good amount of them arent. Imagine, a grown man, special needs or not, a grown man threatened the life of a minor but only got sent home after being mad for being talked to about the situation. He didn't get fired! Instead sent home so that the next day he can continue the same behavior to other coworkers. Sexual harassment has been a thing, those workers have gotten warnings but really, how many do you need before it becomes a real problem. If having piercings is not "well groomed" I would prefer not to see the gms chest hair, I'd prefer not to see people pick their nose, butt, and bellybutton before touching my groceries. Rays apple Market loses decent to good employees because they can't get rid of the problem employees. I will be doing my best to shop elsewhere until the gm and the rest of the staff are retrained or replaced. A thank you to those employees that are real humans with understanding of problems and made it easier to work through that mess. I appreciate all those who are good. You know who you are

Stays well stocked & even has my Toasted Almond Milk (that I cant find anywhere). And we found the most amazing healthy bread (since i know they have it, I make my way through here since we have moved locations)- The prices aren't extremely higher than larger grocery stores & we even find some fun things to try. VERY clean / SUPER nice people. All smiles & helpful! OH- and the most AMAZING ready to eat ribs (if you get there early enough)
