If you're looking for an endocrinologist who is direct, old-school and will give you the facts…read moreabout what's what with your endocrinology issue, Dr. Smilo's your doctor. She's from a different time so her approach is very no-frills. What you hear and see is what you get., which can be quite blunt at times. I strongly recommend Dr. Smilo for the following: *Regular, 3-6 month check-ups if you have diabetes *You're seeking an advocate who actually cares about you and wants you to improve. *You'll actually get an appointment sometime this lifetime as opposed to waiting months on end with every other endocrinologist's office in the bay area. BE ADVISED if you go to see Dr. Smilo remember you're seeing an endocrinologist with over 30-40 years of experience. She's curt, to the point, yes, but very empathetic as well. Check your insurance plan because she may or may not accept your insurance at this point. Call ahead and ask the receptionist to check for you. I LOVE DR. RENATA SMILO!

I have actually accompanied my sister-in-law to her appointments with Dr. Smilo. As more of an…read moreobserver, but can attest to a very positive experience. The doctor is truly a specialist in her field of endocrinology. She has years of experience and knows her field well. She has worked so closely with my sister-in-law to monitor and track her diabetic condition, made recommendations, modified prescriptions and adjusted amounts; really tailored the specific needs of my sister-in-law. Dr. Smilo knows how to work with patients one-on-one with their specific diabetic condition. Folks with diabetes are at different stages. And even different needs at the same stages. The bottom line, my sister-in-law first went to Dr. Smilo last year, very concerned and stressed with her health. All her related levels were high and she was at Type II diabetes. Dr. Smilo has worked so closely with her, recently brought down my sister-in-law to PRE-DIABETIC condition. Dr. Smilo is a miracle worker. She's patient, understanding, listens well, but drills you to follow her guidelines to accomplish the goals; the end results to achieve a healthy patient to better deal with or eliminate the critical stages of diabetes. She might be old-school in some ways. I would like to see some methods and patient tasks more automated like patient/doctor tracking of readings/recordings to a spreadsheet, visually graph data/results, more allowance for comments, with options to print. Same with medications to track; old, new, changes in amounts or types, reasons, dates. Spreadsheet graphs would visually track the progress and any noticeable changes, also reflecting modifications in meds. Can result in less hard copy paperwork/paper files and faxing. And can be emailed and saved to personal e-files. Including references and handouts. But still have the hard copy option for those without or not familiar with automated tools. Dr. Smilo has quite an extensive background and years of practice. Her professional accomplishments, evident, on the wall in her office. She is a specialist in internal medicine, endocrinology, diabetes and metaboism. Her office summary of services mentioned includes diabetes management, abnormal lipids, high blood pressure and heart disease, treatment of acute illness for adults, weight management, and preventive medicine. Dr. Smilo was an associate Clinical Director at UCSF. And she was honored in 2011, being awarded TopDoc in San Francisco. If you want a thorough doctor who will achieve the results you want, Dr. Smilo is your endocrinologist or specialist, as mentioned, in other areas. My sister-in-law is happy with her first-hand experience and results. I can tell and am happy for her and my brother.

Best decision you'll ever make…read more Feeling good on a core level because the actual issue was addressed. The direction of medicine is really exciting and so grateful brilliant cutting edge Drs are bravely reframing the perception and actually looking at the whole body and how one system affects another. I was desperate to sort out what was affecting my mood. She did labs and assessed which vitamins I was low in, hormones that were off, and assigned protocols that alleviate the pain. SO grateful and in awe of how her mind works. Dr. Steph looks at the whole body and pours over labs looking at biomarker levels that most Drs don't even test for. I will not go to Drs in the future that don't have a functional medicine specialty. This exceeded expectations. She writes a superbill that you submit to your insurance so some parts of it will be covered. Insurance companies will pay for bandaids to cover symptoms but sometimes won't pay for solutions that actually fix the problem. Baffling.
