Used to have a great indoor pool but it has been broken for some time and will remain so for another year I think. Lots of average joes there too, but mostly a bunch of gym rat types. This is not a sauna and spa gym. This is a weights, chalk, squat rack and Dumbbells that go up much higher than I can lift (120+). I am a physique competitor so I enjoy the atmosphere, but it is definitely not for everyone and those who prefer a more relaxed comfortable gym will probably not feel quite at home though everyone is very friendly. Hope you like heavy metal hardcore music like korn, godsmack, disturbed, chevelle, alien ant farm, saliva because that is what will be playing during your workout. It wasn't too loud though so didn't mind. Even through I prefer EDM to workout. My friend Jimmy felt it was a pretty hardcore gym and while it wasn't exactly his cup of tea he had a good workout. They have a nice supplement cooler as well with protein, pre workouts, and other supplements. Prices are fair $3-4 for a protein drink, $4 for a pre workout, $2 power bars etc. It was pretty empty in there, it was a bit hot though -- fan cooled on a hot Virginia day is bound to make you sweat. They did have air conditioning though but it was definitely not on full blast. In summary: great no frills gym for serious lifters, and guys who want the "muscle" vibe. I did see on the wall an ad for Zumba and it looked like there was a group exercise studio in the back. So some fit moms may like it here too.

Great Staff!!!! Though a small gym there is never a huge crowd and I have almost always had instant access to the equipment I needed to use on any given day. The staff maintains the gym very well and there has been no issues in regards to faulty equipment and/or gym facilities. I also used my two free personal training sessions since joining..... my goal was to remind myself how to safely do dead lifts and squats as I had not done them in 15 years and seemed to forget how to do the exercises without killing my lower back...... the personal trainer easily accommodated my request and answered all of my questions as well as introducing me to some good ways to stretch and prepare my legs to to squats and dead lifts. All in all a good gym well worth the monthly fee........ I highly recommend it.

I used to work out there during my lunch hour. Alas, it didn't make sense any more to belong to a gym so far from my house. I've since joined a corporate gym (I won't say which one) for convenience sake and the difference is like night and day. The Gym Downtown is certainly not the fanciest gym around, but it's independently owned and has a great family feel. The people that work there learn your name and seem not only excited to see you every time you come in but ready and willing to go above and beyond in motivating you to meet your fitness goals. They have a good varied group fitness class schedule, including lunch time classes during the week for people who work downtown. I like the way it's laid out on two floors and the way you can look out onto Granby Street through the huge windows. The bathrooms and showers are very nice. My Medigap supplement policy offers a free gym membership and this AF location is about a mile from my house, so I decided to give them a shot. She then gave me a tour of the gym which was larger than I expected, nicely organized, and very clean. At my age, I will probably be focused mostly on cardio (treadmill and cycle), but the gym was well equipped with various machines and free weights.
