This was our first foray into Tibetan food. Mainly we were looking for something to eat close by, and this restaurant was only a block away. The restaurant was packed a few days before, which made it even more attractive. Coming in with pretty high expectations given the rave reviews on Yelp, the meal was satisfying and met them all. Well, all except for the homemade rice wine. I did not have a taste for it - but if you like sake, you may have a differing opinon.
The atmosphere was nice - the evening air crisp, and the outdoor seating was perfect to enjoy the lovely night. Our server, very attentive, came with German menus... which were intimating, given this was my first time eating Tibetan food (and I was not familar with the menu), and everything was in written in German. Doubly difficult to follow. Regardless, there were lovely photos of the food, which is really all you need.
We ordered the momos, which were recommended on Yelp, and we split the order - half meat and half veggie (6 and 6). The veggie momos (momos are a type of dumpling native to Nepal), very similar to a Chinese dumpling, except slightly bigger in size and with thicker dumpling skin. The veggie momos were filled with a type of chive and potatoes (I think), pan fried to a beautiful golden brown. Delicious! Think if a Chinese dumpling and an Indian samosa had a love child. The dips they brought out were equally yummy. It came with a soy sauce, a hot chili oil and a spicy vinegar dressing. There was also a spicy cream (mayonnaise) dip, but we didnt use that one as much. The meat dumplings were also delicious. Highly recommend them if you come here.
We also shared the Shethug Trumkhu Klare Nudelsuppe mit Rindfleisch und Gemüse. Clear noodle soup with minced beef and veggies. Reminded me of a dumpling noodle soup I used to get in Taiwan. The broth was full of umami boldness, and I finished the broth before I even began eating the noodles and meat. Very tasty. Highly recommend.
All in all, this is a great neighborhood restaurant. Although it's the first time trying Tibetan, I know it won't be the last. read more
