I met Joe Gallagher with Oasis when my husband, Gregg, suffered a seizure related to his malignant…read morebrain tumor and was to be released from the hospital because there was nothing more they could do for his care. I had no idea where to go. Joe helped me review options around the Richmond, VA area for nursing care/rehab sites with physical, occupational and speech therapy. Gregg was able to receive excellent rehab for 3 weeks before we again were denied continued nursing care and had to move to our final option, assisted living. Joe joined me during the interview process at multiple facilities in the area to seek a good fit for Gregg regarding both nursing care and rehab care. Although Gregg had made strides in his rehab, his level of nursing care was deemed too involved for two of the more "prestigious" assisted living facilities in the area. I was very discouraged by this setback, but Joe and his wife, Judy, were exceptional in their emotional and spiritual support and kept me moving forward. Our third search was fruitful and Gregg received the best care I could have imagined for the next 10 months of his life. Through all of this journey, the Gallaghers kept in touch with us--they were never more than a phone call, text or email away and Joe visited Gregg at his new residence several times a month and even more during his last few weeks. Joe and Gregg shared a bond of faith, tears and hope that lifted both of them. Although Gregg was at peace with the treatments and outcomes he faced, he was even more so after spending time with Joe. Through our relationship with the Gallaghers, Gregg was able to receive therapy and hospice care at the assisted living facility. Joe's knowledge of Gregg as a person helped us find all the best support we needed. Even after his passing, the Gallaghers have kept touch with me and our two sons. Our family has been blessed to have had the Gallaghers by Gregg's side through his disease. We have met two new friends and grateful for their outreach even after Gregg's death.

Kathy DeStories responded to my inquiry & I went into detail telling her what happened, what I currently pay per month, and what my budget was. She scheduled me for a tour. When I went into the main location (they have several buildings), the receptionist was not friendly. After signing in/temperature check, I was told where to find Kathy. I went to her office & we talked and talked and talked. Then she showed me the pricing sheet which was way over my budget!!!! Why would you have me drive all this way and then show me something almost $2k over what I'm paying??? Ugh!!! She apologized and then said she forgot that sometimes they have companion rooms...???? Not sure how she forgot, but ok. That price was closer to what I paid, so she took me for a tour in their Parkside building (memory care unit). It wasn't as updated as I expected especially for what they are charging but anyway. We walked around & there was a resident walking around and he popped Kathy's butt a few times. Ummm, if that happened to MY granny, she's gonna hit him with the uppercut. I promise him that. Anyway, we kept walking around and as we did, some parts of the unit wreaked of urine and feces. They need to clean and keep the residents clean/dry. Come on now!! We went back to her office & she gave me all the paperwork. I was shocked that before you complete the normal application, you have to complete a financial one which includes giving them copies of your bank statements and whatnot. They are nosier than Social Services. I don't know many people who can financially afford these places but need them to take care of their family member. No matter what a bank account shows, they still have to pay it. So, I decided to continue looking. I want to make sure she is in a place I can trust to keep her safe and protected as well as clean/dry. I also want her somewhere that doesn't have memory care residents looking like zombies (drugged up) with no kind of fun activities. My search continues...

As an out of town family member of a long term resident (15 yr.) I can no longer recommend Lakewood…read moredue to what I have observed this past year. At the time my parents made the decision and sizeable investment required to enter independent living (Villas) assurances were made LW provided a full continuum of care available to residents and implied staff would periodically assess any changes in resident medical status, including cognitive, to transition to differing levels of care, including assisted living. Our mother has long experienced and is treated for various underlying medical conditions which are now more complex due to additional factors including inconsistent cognition, seriously deteriorating vision and balance issues. Several months ago she fell at night in her unit and failed to activate either of the 2 emergency call devices provided, further evidence of cognition, balance and vision issues. She spent the night on the floor however LW became involved the following morning. After a hospital stay and followup stay in LW Healthcare Unit, rather than transitioning her to assisted living (where she could receive closer supervision including administration of the numerous daily medications she receives during the day) she was instructed to hire private duty nurses and to return to independent living. She has since fallen again. It appears LW is financially motivated to shift nursing care expenses to residents rather than properly transitioning medically compromised long term residents to assisted living or other advanced care options outlined at the time my parents became residents. The question becomes, is LW incapable of properly assessing the ongoing health status of long term residents? Or do they prefer to shift the increased cost of nursing care to the individual residents rather than transitioning them to assisted living? I could provide additional examples of reductions in service to residents over the years in spite of ever increasing fees. One such was the drastic reduction of on property shuttles which are critical to residents who no longer can drive yet are allowed to live in remote buildings and rely on shuttles to participate in on property meals, exercise and recreational activities. After much outcry from affected residents, it seems shuttle services have since been restored. That reduction in service should have never occurred, feels like it was financially motivated. My advice is to think long and hard and ask a lot of questions as you evaluate such a major decision and significant investment for your loved one..

She gave us a tour & was very sweet. When it came time to sign the lease, I met with Lauren. She seemed nice too. I didn't have a problem with her until my family member had to abruptly move out. My family member came straight from rehab to this place. We had her apartment all decorated and everything. I truly felt like it was the perfect place for her. She moved in & she was welcomed with a sign on the front desk and her front door. The staff was so nice. Her apartment was very spacious & it had a small fridge. It isn't very diverse, but that is how it seems to be at these places. They are just too expensive for a lot of us to afford. 2 days after moving in, their staff wasn't able to notice that something was medically wrong with her. Luckily my child was there & she knew what it was. They took too long to call 911, so my child did. They came, took her to the hospital, and she ended up being there for months. I had to move all of her things out the next week because I didn't feel comfortable with bringing her back. If they didn't know there was a medical issue, I can't trust that they will make sure she's ok. I was sad about it honestly. It took a lot to find this place. I truly loved it for her. The only other issue I had with them is that I received a ridiculous bill for medications that she didn't take. She was there for 2 days only!!! There's no reason why I should have to pay for 30 & 60 day supplies that I didn't take with us. The pharmacy said they were supposed to send the meds back & Lauren and the head of nursing, Tracy, ignored my emails. That put a sour taste in my mouth, so now I don't care for the way they handle business. I still love Elaina though. She was truly a joy!!

He was very nice and patient. I was able to explain her situation & he seemed empathetic. He worked out a deal with me, which I didn't know involved her having a roommate. Although I was concerned about that, I still entertained him and was ready to move forward with the process. It wasn't until I started completing the paperwork that I got turned off. They require that YOU be the guarantor and put YOUR CREDIT on the line for your family member. Even if you're the POA, YOU have to give them your SSN & assume full responsibility. Umm, NO SIR!! I have never had to do that as POA anywhere else. She is responsible for her own debt. I just pay it. I'm not allowing them to put an unnecessary inquiry on my credit. So, I immediately left and went to a different facility that I was looking at for her and signed the lease there. It's bad enough that this facility is outrageous in cost, but to also handle business like this is just too much. On top of that, the room that wanted to offer wreaked of urine and the roommate's family had control of the SHARED closet. I don't want her sharing a closet. Period. And the bathroom was on the roommate's side of the room & it clearly isn't cleaned much due to the strong Stench in the room that fills the room from the hvac system that also blew from that side of the room. It wasn't a good fit for us, but I did enjoy speaking to Reuben.

The staff at this assisted living facility could not care less about the residents. They ignore most of them each day and do what ever they can to avoid any level of care - even minimal. If you do, you will realize what we learned too late - that there are other, better, caring facilities who actually treat residents with respect, provide basic care, and actually give the support necessary.

I have and would highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a peaceful, caring, and stress free place to live. Some of the reasons for my love of SMW are: 1. It is owned and managed by the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, which gives me a great deal of comfort knowing that they will never take advantage of me in any way, and they truly have MY best interests in mind always. 2. It is open to all, with no restrictions. In fact, many residents are not Catholic and are of many diverse backgrounds. 3. The staff at all levels are incredible. They are super qualified, helpful, and friendly at all times. I've never heard an unfriendly comment from anyone. 4. There are many different activities available and never any pressure to participate or not. Musical concerts of many kinds by outside professionals are a frequent and very pleasant activity. 5. Several different apartment floorplans are available. Mine fits me to a T! 6. Dinners are included in all plans and they provide a great opportunity to mingle with other residents and share some great stories and experiences. A great group of people. Please forgive the verbosity, but I want to convey what a great place this really is. If you're considering a retirement community, without a doubt, this is the place you want to be. I highly recommend it.
