Great buffet with some sushi and everything was fresh and not too expensive. This will be my go to when I want Chinese.

Zeng's Garden Chinese Restaurant - Family platter!

Ok, so we were in Shallotte, we were hungry, and we were not looking for fast food. Yelp to the…read morerescue-we were near Zeng's, hidden in an unassuming building behind the Zaxby's, and decided to check it out. They didn't have the buffet going on a quiet Sunday afternoon (we got there between lunch and dinner, around 4), so we ordered off the menu. While they had the usual American Chinese options, we were tempted by the family platter-lo mein, fried rice, and your choice of two chicken options. We went for General Tso's and chicken wings, because, well, how can you go wrong with fried chicken two ways? The platter was huge! A whole casserole pan full, in fact! It was a great deal for under $35-definitely enough food for a family of four (or more, if you're less piggy than we are) The quantity was impressive but honestly the quality was surprisingly good-the general tso's was lightly breaded and perfectly crispy as were the wings. I don't usually go for either fried rice or lo mein but they were both pretty tasty too. Atmosphere was not fancy, but it was clean, and nice and quiet and cool on a hot day with old school decor. The folks running the place were super nice as well. Is it Michelin star material? No. But for a straightforward Chinese American spot in the middle of southern coastal NC, it was an amazing deal and quite a delicious and enjoyable experience. If we ever find ourselves in Shallotte, we'll be heading back here for sure.

Very disappointing experience. After church on a Sunday is normally a busy time for restaurants…read more For a buffet, this normally means that the food is being emptied and replenished continuously. Not so with this buffet. I saw only two items refilled during the complete time I was there. Entrees were down to peppers and onions without the meats. The wonton soup had no wontons, only broth. It didn't matter, though, as there were no soup bowls available either. I will not be returning. The Shallotte Hibachi is further down on the right and has a much larger selection of food items and is well maintained.

This used to be a great local take out restaurant when it was the previous owners. We had many…read morerandom fails under new ownership and continued to give them time to get it together while continuing to support a local business but tonight was my final straw. First off the BBQ SPARE ribs are deep fried for reheating opposed to how they should be done under the salamander. But what really pulled on my last nerve was I ordered the happy family which I've had many times before here a great dish. Lobster, shrimp, chicken, beef and pork with Chinese vegetables. $19 and change with tax ( that's not my complaint I get this economy). Ok no lobster they use Langston lobster which is crawfish not lobster and imitation crab meat which has never been in this dish. Called after about 10 minutes said dive back for refund( explained it's a 30 minute round trip in this rural area asked him to look up my number that's on file to verify that I've been a good loyal customer. Wouldn't do anything else, said ok so you'll loose a very good customer exact words that's okay. Very shady representing things that are not what is being paid for

Located in the Lowe's Foods shopping center, there is plenty of parking available. There are spots…read moreright in front of the restaurant, although they can get filled quickly as there are several other businesses on either side. There are also handicapped places right in front, but those are often filled as well. Inside is a small seating area for maybe 15 people. This is mostly a take out/ delivery place. I tried to use their online ordering through the web site, but couldn't get past the part where I did not want to create an account. I called in, and the person taking the order repeated everything at the end, which is a nice touch. I was told it would be ready in 15 minutes. Everything was ready and waiting at the counter when I arrived 15 minutes later. Each entre was packaged in a sealed plastic container. The soups were in Styrofoam cups with lids. The egg rolls and shrimp toast were in waxed paper bags. All this was in a paper bag, which was inside a plastic bag. Everything was well packaged and nothing leaked on the way home. The shrimp toast initially looked burnt, but it was fried in very hot oil, so only the outside was crispy. Inside was a warm and delicious mix with a lot of shrimp. This was some of the better shrimp toast I have had. The egg rolls were slightly soft and not as crispy as I would expect, but I think this was more due to the time spent in the waxed paper bag. Any moisture from the hot egg roll could not escape. The egg roll was stuffed full and tasted quite good. The hot and sour soup was also good. It was a bit thicker than I prefer, although the added thickener was well mixed. The soup was not particularly spicy, but it did have a nice sour flavor. The pork fried rice was pretty good as well. There was a good amount of pork included along with carrots, peas, and onions. One person in our party had a crunch while chewing. It appeared to be pork gristle, but that was the only problem noted. The vegetable delight combination was well cooked. It was more bland than I expected, but this was due to the sauce used. The vegetables all tasted fresh. The General Tso's chicken was prepared properly. It was not spicy, although I assume you could ask for increased heat level. The chicken was tender and flavorful. The Moo Shu vegetables didn't necessarily look appetizing, but it tasted very good. Moo Shu results in a brown sauce which mutes the colors of the vegetables, but the flavors all can come through. The "pancakes" are regular tortillas, but they are great for making moo shu burritos. The steak teriyaki was very good. You get four decent strips of beef on skewers, marinated in teriyaki sauce. the meat was tender and very flavorful. I think this was my favorite dish, with the moo shu coming in a close second. I will definitely come back the next time I am here. They have a very large menu, and I am interested in trying many of the items.

Come on over for a late-night meal! I decided to go with dinner combo #13, boneless ribs with pork…read morefried rice and an egg roll. It was quite a generous portion for the price, although the egg roll was a bit disappointing. Overall, the meal was tasty. Would I make a special trip to dine here again? Probably not, but if I happen to be in the area, I wouldn't mind stopping by.
