Outstanding charter. You can stop reading now, book, and I guarantee you'll have the time of your life. I truly can't imagine anyone doing it more right than Mike and Clark. They make a great team, provide the very best equipment, and do everything to ensure you have a whale (tuna?) of a time. We departed the port very early in the morning and proceeded to blast by all the other charters (including ones that started hours earlier) en route to the fishing. Nobody digs taking your time over the bar and their boat guarantees you don't. Upon hitting the fishing "grounds" (why do they call it that!?), we trolled around for about an hour, had a hit or two to tell us we were getting to the right area, and then suddenly all hell broke loose. The next hour or two was nonstop action with a fresh 25-35lb fish entering the boat every couple of minutes. All hands were tied up as we filled the boat in very little time. Based on radio communication, I believe that not only were we one of the first boats to the target water, but we were the first to find the fish, and I'm pretty certain the first to return to port. As much as I like boat rides, charter fishing is not about the ride, and both me and my body were happy to be back on land in the shortest amount of time. By 5pm our fish had been cleaned, packed, and we were on our way home. Everyone left with a filled cooler and a beaming smile on their face. Let me first talk about the fact that the crew of the shake and bake capt mike and Clark are the best team in the sea. I went out two days with them and I still on cloud 9. I have been sport fishing for over 20 years and this was the best day of my life. They out is on the fish and stayed there till be plugged the boat. 38 albacore tuna for 6 of us at a average of 25 pounds each. They are very patient and very helpful. Where to begin? If you've never fished for tuna before and haven't fished much in general, Shake N Bake is the boat for you. If you fish a lot--maybe even have your own boat--but haven't gone out for Tuna yet (this was me), book with these guys ASAP (they fill up fast!) If you're already into tuna fishing, you probably already know these guys, and also know that a lot of Tuna fisherman will leave their own boats in the slip on certain days with rougher conditions and head out with Shake and Bake if there's an open seat. Point being: the boat itself can handle more than the crew would ever want to (incidentally, this means lower risk of your trip being scrubbed due to weather). But Shake N Bake is about so much more than an awesome boat. Mike and Clark are second to none and they make a great team. I'd apologized in advance because I anticipated being pretty excited and asking a lot of questions. Mike laughed and said he and Clark get as excited for every Tuna as they did for the first one. He said if I had time and energy to ask questions, he'd be happy to answer. I'm thinking he knew something I didn't know, because there wasn't time or energy to ask questions once the frenzy began. To learn more about said frenzy, check out the "live bait 101" section of the Shake N Bake website. Just be aware that reading about it can't prepare you for how crazy it is. Fortunately, Mike and Clark have your back. I believe Clark has 6 or 7 arms that he uses to simultaneously throw anchovies, bait hooks, direct clients over and under each others' lines to avoid tangles, lean over the boat and untangle lines when it inevitably happens, and be on the lookout for questions or potential issues while all of this is happening. By the time fish are coming to the surface, Mike is there, ready to gaff and bleed the fish, answer questions, and direct traffic. It's controlled chaos of the highest and most enjoyable order. A quick note here since I mention gaffing and bleeding. Fisherman already know this, but if you haven't killed fish before, be aware that fish will likely be killed on this trip. If you don't want to see lots of blood, this is not the trip for you. If you've ever had a tuna fish sandwich or a nice piece of seared ahi though, despite the blood, this is a more humane precursor to your dining experience, not to mention the end result is infinitely fresher. You're also supporting local businesses if you utilize dockside services for cleaning and canning your catch, not to mention Shake N Bake itself! One final note on the PEOPLE involved. These gentlemen are true class acts. I've rarely met a guy with the combination of confidence, competence, humor, AND humility that Mike has. I tried to give him a tip, and he said give it to Clark. I told him I had a tip for him and Clark and he said "give mine to Clark then too." And what to say about Clark?! Wow, this guy is impressive. I doubt he sleeps or eats. I believe he catches fish 24/7, and he can't get enough! This guy so much as looks over the side of the boat and fish just start jumping right onto the deck. They fear to speak his name! Shake N Bake has another captain at times, and although I haven't had a chance to fish with him, I understand he's awesome too. Finally, Jenn (Mike's wife) was a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. Having a dedicated team member to handle booking, scheduling, questions, etc. is really helpful and Jenn does a great job. The whole experience with Shake N Bake was too awesome to try to reduce to a google/yelp review (though I've tried my best). If I didn't already have my next trip booked, I'd say it was a once in a lifetime experience. And who knows... I may never see a day that good again, but with these guys, I know I have the best shot. read more

Captain Mike and the Shake N Bake crew run a tight, top-notch and fun operation. We got a very early start in order to cross the bar at the right tide and the trip out was smooth and easy. It's a beautiful vessel and Mike ran it perfectly, deftly in close quarters in the harbor and powered up and over and in between the swells to make the riding easy. (Although I would definitely recommend getting a patch prescription - regardless of the quality of the ride, you're still on the open ocean and those swells will get to you after a time.) Tuna! Mike and Clark worked hard to get us on fish for about an hour. The bite was slow to come, but once it did - man, oh man! We had fish on almost every few minutes for over two hours. We loaded up the holds by 11:00am (30 fish at 30-40 pounds each). Mike and Clark made it super easy for newbies like us to hook up, stay hooked, and land these beauties. The highest possible quality rods and reels were all available to us and there was plenty of bait. Mike and Clark are experts at tuna fishing and are a great team. So much enthusiasm, confidence, patience, humor and competence. This is a rare and valuable combination. We were provided with delicious boxed sandwiches for the ride back to Ilwaco - which is super fast. This boat flies! The benefit of that is more time fishing and back to port first so you can get your tuna to the processors before everyone else arrives. Went out with Captain Mike and his deckhand Clark on August 3rd and had the time of our life. The boat and the fishing equipment are the best you can get. Even the experienced fisherman will appreciate the rods, reels and "gut busters" used on the Shake n Bake. The boat handles the rough seas better than any boat I have been on, and when over the bar, gets on plane and runs smoothly at 26 knots getting us to the fishing grounds really fast. Clark has a way of communicating to the novice fisherman like nobody else. By the end of the day he had rookies feeling like champions. Long story short, we put over 40 tuna on board and were headed back to the dock by 1:00. What an experience! Only 5 of those 40 were caught trolling and the rest using light tackle and live bait. A true sporting adventure that was as good as it could possibly be. Me and my pals were dog tired from fighting these bullets of the sea and could not give these two who run the Shake n Bake higher praise. They were fantastic. Complete service including lunch and drinks. Who does that in the U.S.? It costs more to run with these guys, but if you want an adventure and not just a boat ride, go with team Shake n Bake. You will not be disappointed in anyway. The boat is extremely comfortable, XM tunes, ultra clean environment, (until tuna blood happens), and top shelf gear.
