When you pick up the salami, check to see if there's a skinny plastic sleeve on it. For some reason, the manufacturers seem to double-cover these things; that's something I've seen even at the grocery chains. Most of these places will allow you to try a slice before purchasing it. The clerks here are pretty good about this. It's not that humongous of a store, and no seating is provided inside, but they do offer a sandwich bar, where you can order specialties to go. You're not required to pick a number to get service, but it does get busy in here. The shop has a cement floor, with display cases laid out in front of you as you walk in. It's really a shame they cannot come to la belle province, Mais c'est ca! Back 10 years ago I got my wife hooked on the lemon garlic salad dressing! To this day it's her favourite salad dressing and we try to buy a case (of 12) twice a year! They have an excellent produce selection, seafood, cold cuts, and cool sauces and house brand Farm Boy brand + and excellent bakery! I've noticed they have boned up on prepared foods and have one of the biggest selection I have seen on K-cups for Keurig! It's really a shame we couldn't have FB in Montreal as it excels at providing a different yet fresh and cool selection of different products! Go on a Saturday and you'll hear lots of Polish spoken. Apparently a lot of embassies' staffs visit there. The staff is always friendly and helpful, and you notice the positive atmosphere upon entering the shop. But it's the meat, and Lavergne's meat probably makes them the best butcher shop in Ottawa (at least that I've visited). I've been going for over 10 years and they never disappoint, with reasonable prices to boot. In particular, their sausages, pepperettes and BACON are fantastic, as are their various other cuts of fresh meat. Their store-made pork schnitzels are a favourite at home and much better than Metro (which has good meat), and Farm Boy (which dropped "normal" pork schnitzels many years ago in favour of that lime-cilantro aberration). Oh, and don't forget to try their cretons! Anyhoo, Lavergnes is a local treasure and I hope they're around for decades to come.

The owner who is the butcher herself and her Mom are always welcoming and helpful. You can really tell that they take pride in their business and for good reason! The butcher shop is filled with so many things to drool over and the aromas from Fiora Bread, located inside North Station, are tantalizing. It's so hard not to buy everything in sight! The prices are reasonable given the high quality of the products and they have an expansive freezer section with pre-made homemade meals (so quick and easy!). We appreciate all the different cuts of meat they have as well as variety. They do dry aged meats, too, which is worth mentioning. Definitely stop in for a visit when you're in the area or we even recommend making a little day trip out to Manotick and including this local gem on your itinerary!

I bought a marinated flank steak that was amazing on the BBQ tonight. They also carry some great sauces, including my favourite Rufus and Teague Blazing Hot sauce. You can buy frozen pies from The Big Apple, which are the best pies around. They have a burger shack inside....sadly I was too early. Some other time. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the boss a really good man. This was a great discovery and I will happily drive the 25 km to get there. Very highly recommended.

I was blown away by all the meat, the prepared goods. Burger counter. Some seating. Freezer choices. Some dried goods, bread. I got away with Chorizo, some lean ground beef and some beautiful olive oil. Is this place cheap? No! But, I pay for quality without batting an eye. Especially foodie stuff. Next round was a Tuesday aft. Ahhh. Better. I could see everything, not so packed. It was just after a long weekend so some things were sold out but I grabbed more lean beef, a chicken parm portion, a beef Jamaican patty and a stuffed potato. All were good! The chicken portion from the fresh cabinet was $11.50! More than my lb of ground beef! But it was a filling piece and fed me x 2. I love this place.
