Goat karahi
Sho R.

I stopped by for lunch on a weekend. The place was not busy. Goat karahi was tender and flavorful. I took it with a plain naan. Tandoori chicken leg and chicken biryani were good as well. I also had a Mango lassi. Complimentary Tea was ok. Owner seems to be in business for a long time, and is the second generation.

I've been going to the Sunnyvale location for years ever since Shalimar closed down. The owner (the brother of the San Mateo location) told me about the newly opened San Mateo location I decided to give it a try. The location is convenient for those taking Caltrain because it's within walking distance from the Hillsdale Caltrain station. The restaurant is on El Camino next to many small businesses so parking is mostly street parking. It's close to the 25th Ave business/restaurant district so it's got competitions. The location is not large so I think the ideal number of people is a party of 1-6. The ordering is efficient and there is free tea. I'm sure there is free water but the water flasks are not in the frig. Note that this is Northern Indian/Pakistani food so order meat as this is not some southern vegetarian place. When I go by myself I usually order the signature tandoori chicken legs with a butter naan. I believe those are my favorite and the flavors are not what you can get from other Indian restaurants. This location today has too much spice on the chicken but it's still delicious. The legs are tender and extremely juicy unlike most other Indian tandoori chicken places. Order legs if you are a chicken connoisseur. Service is friendly and approachable.

The owner was there taking orders, and he was friendly and helpful. We told him we don't like food coloring, and so he was able to make menu suggestions and accommodated our request. We ordered Samosa Chaat, Garlic Naan, Chicken Biryani, Chicken Kebob, and Chicken Palak. The dishes were made of fresh ingredients and with good recipes. The portion sizes were generous and so it was a good value. The restaurant is casual. We got our own napkins and utensils. There was also a set-up for free chai tea.

Tandori Chicken & Naan...

Fabulous Tandori chicken & roti!!! Been to Packwan & Shalimar and this is tops for me. It's a real treat to have an authentic restaurant like this in San Mateo. Free chai too like old times! Note: Parallel parking on El Camino is limited during lunch, but better in evening.

Plain Naan

Excellent place. I go all the way down to Sunnyvale branch from but glad it's closer. This one is all brand new and brighter than the other location.

Would always go to the location in Sunnyvale so happy that they added a location closer to home, real good food.

The Good We shared a patty melt with onion rings. The burger was cooked to perfection. It was juicy and flavorful. The grilled onions were perfect, the bread was toasted exactly right, and the grilled onions made it exceptional. The onion rings were crispy and flavorful. The ranch dressing for dipping was yummy. My wife is a Diet Coke aficionado, but they don't carry it. She gave the Salaam Cola a try and was blown away, saying it was better than Diet Coke. I tried it and don't think I could distinguish it from Diet Coke in a blind taste test. I got the berry hibiscus tea which was exactly what I needed on a warm day. The Bad The juicy, saucy burger was so good that we each needed more than one napkin each. It was that good. Total minor point. Summary You need to get in here to try them out. It was our first visit and will definitely not be our last. Support this local business because these are the kind, passionate, life giving business owners that put out exceptional products all of us should support.

Maybe the squirrels will like it. They used to have better fries like the ones they feature in their pictures on Doordash. I have tried their burgers and other items in the past and it was about 3/5. So today's 1/5, leaves me to give a 2/5 overall.

Ox 9 Lanzhou Hand-Pulled Noodles -- A Must-Try for Noodle Lovers!…read moreWe're back again, and Ox 9 continues to impress! Their new clip of the hand-pulled noodle master showcasing his incredible skills makes the dining experience even more exciting. Watching the noodles being freshly stretched and crafted by hand is truly a treat. The noodles are still delicious, flavorful, and satisfying. Service remains friendly and efficient, and the ambiance continues to be welcoming and comfortable. For anyone who loves authentic hand-pulled noodles, Ox 9 delivers great quality at a great value. It's definitely a place where you get a big bang for your buck! Highly recommended!

I only tried a little of this (it was my daughter's order), and it seemed pretty good, but maybe nothing special. I'd have to try more of it to get a better idea of how it is. 2. pork ribs noodle (soup), $15.48. Good! 3. stewed lamb noodle (soup), $16.98. I didn't try this, but the others said it was good. 4. chili oil noodles, $13.98. Very good! There was some bok choy (maybe blanched), shredded carrot, and soy bean bean sprouts, and a very tasty spicy chili oil. This comes with wide, flat noodles that are nicely chewy and bouncy. The noodles are very long, so you'll have to bite them off or cut them with your chopsticks. 5. Thai tea, $4.50. Good, I only had a couple sips, but it seemed good. 6. sweet pear drink, $3.50. My daughter ordered this. Not bad, but too sweet for my taste. Wouldn't get it again. Portions are generous. We each took enough home for another small or medium-sized meal. There is an automated waitlist where you sign in at a kiosk and get a number. At the table, you can order through the QR code, but our waitress came over to take our order since we'd never been there before and had some questions. Service was fairly quick and efficient. There are lots of graphics on the walls explaining the history of the restaurant, how the noodles are made, and the history of Lanzhou noodles.

I didn't expect this restaurant to be almost full especially when it's a cafe. It can be too loud for me to study and work here despite having WiFi. I didn't really feel like eating too much because of yesterday. So I decided to get one of the pastries as well as a cappuccino. Almost most of them look too sweet and I decided to get the Ube Puff since it's between the sweet and savory side. They did put a lot of Ube cream which made me surprised. Also the cappuccino is like any cappuccino I had from most restaurants. Hopefully, it's less crowded and I probably will get one of the sandwiches or other larger items the next time I return here.

The eggs were perfectly poached, the Hollandaise was tasty (but not overwhelming), and the biscuits they come in were really tasty. I also appreciated the lightly dressed salad that came as a side: the greens were very fresh. I also got the Cuban Cortadito, and I was pumped to have a non-dairy coffee drink. It was very well made: the slight hint of condensed milk was a nice touch. It was a nice sweet drink without being cloyingly sweet. But they have so many tasty coffee drinks that it was hard to choose, so I'll def be back to try more of them!

We shared the 20-pack family meal, which came with 20 wings, 3 flavors, 1 large fries, and 2 dips. We added some mozzarella sticks and fountain drinks. Ordered on the kiosk and the food was ready in about 15 minutes. For the wing flavors, we got the salt and pepper bone-in, regular buffalo boneless and mango habanero boneless. My favorite of them all was easily the salt and pepper. The jalapeno and onion garnish just takes it over the top for me. 10/10 would order every time. The fries and mozzarella sticks were just alright though. While the wings came out hot, the mozz sticks and fries were room temperature, with the fries being a bit floppy. Overall, still a really solid spot to grab wings. Definitely a place I wouldn't hesitate coming back to when I'm craving wings.

To say my…read morewife was elated tp see them open up in Redwood City close to her workplace, is an understatement. She has since brought numerous people tp this location. I also love coming here everytime I'm in town and need to finally revisit the original location since their renovation. On our most current visit, everything wasn't flawless like it usually is, but let me tell you why it didn't hinder our night, nor our reason to constantly come back. As creatures of habit, we humans tend to stick to what we know. I know especially at my age, I know what I want, and don't you dare make me change my order, dang nabbit. So, one of our go to dishes everytime we visit, is their roast chicken. This particular night, they didn't have any available, I believe the rotisserie was being serviced. Though we were a bit disappointed, our server Ben, made everything better. He took care of us, not only in conversation, but with a suggestion of trying the cauliflower. Cauliflower instead of chicken, how does that work? Well for us, it did. Never thought I'd sub cauliflower for chicken, but it was more than satisfying. Though we will always get the chicken, we more than likely will have to add the cauliflower along with it. We also ordered the Arugula Fennel Salad, which was light, and the crisp of the apples gives it a nice crunch. A side of chicken kabob to go with the salad. Fried cheese, it was good, especially drizzling the honey on it. Double kebab plate of chicken and filet mignon. Which I devoured. A refreshing raspberry lemonade. Just tart and sweet enough. If you're lucky to get Ben as your server, you won't regret it and if the server suggests a dish, give it a try, it make change things up for the better.

You can't make reservations in the evening, but we were able to get a seat after waiting for 20 or so minutes on a Friday evening. We had a dog with us, and they were able to find us a table in the patio out back. They have patio seating in the front, seating in the restaurant proper, and then more seating in the back patio. The ambiance inside looked really nice, but they didn't want our dog (we don't claim ESA) in the main restaurant. The patio out back was also nice, with a water fountain. Our dog was able to sit under the table and take a nap. The restaurant is BUSY, so the crowd volume was loud, but we could still have a conversation. Behind me was another table and I could hear pretty much their whole conversation. The food was all very good. We did family-style, where we shared all the dishes amongst us. I think the roast chicken might be harder to share, because you have to carve it.
