I've been going to the Sunnyvale location for years ever since Shalimar closed down. The owner (the brother of the San Mateo location) told me about the newly opened San Mateo location I decided to give it a try. The location is convenient for those taking Caltrain because it's within walking distance from the Hillsdale Caltrain station. The restaurant is on El Camino next to many small businesses so parking is mostly street parking. It's close to the 25th Ave business/restaurant district so it's got competitions. The location is not large so I think the ideal number of people is a party of 1-6. The ordering is efficient and there is free tea. I'm sure there is free water but the water flasks are not in the frig. Note that this is Northern Indian/Pakistani food so order meat as this is not some southern vegetarian place. When I go by myself I usually order the signature tandoori chicken legs with a butter naan. I believe those are my favorite and the flavors are not what you can get from other Indian restaurants. This location today has too much spice on the chicken but it's still delicious. The legs are tender and extremely juicy unlike most other Indian tandoori chicken places. Order legs if you are a chicken connoisseur. Service is friendly and approachable.

Excellent place. I go all the way down to Sunnyvale branch from but glad it's closer. This one is all brand new and brighter than the other location.

Would always go to the location in Sunnyvale so happy that they added a location closer to home, real good food.

    4. Chicken Tandoori Breast, 30. Basmati Rice, 14. Chicken Tikka, 28. Garlic Naan

the food was so good! got the tandoori chicken breast which was very juicy and not dry at all. the basmati rice was really fragrant and tasty. the chicken tikka masala was so so good, and you could tell the chicken was cooked either on the grill or in the tandoori oven because it had the skewer marks on it. Lastly the garlic naan was awesome, crispy around the edges and ton of garlic on it! service was very attentive and the ambiance is super chill. and i love eating onion and peppers on the side, which they had TONS of!

Shared the beef kebab entree with the pumpkin, yogurt and meat sauce dish and a side of spinach. I like how the restaurant is tucked in the corner of a strip mall and non descript from the outside. I came in this past Saturday (in the rain and recovering from surgery) because I just needed to be at my favorite restaurant. The moment we walked in, they greeted us warmly and still remembered us, even though we hadn't been in for about three years. That kind of care means everything. The food is unmatched. The lamb is incredible. The potato appetizer with the meat sauce is our all-time favorite. The shrimp on the combination skewers are huge and full of flavor. The warm bread and perfectly cooked rice make every meal feel comforting and special. The service is amazing, the family who owns it is so kind, and the whole place has a welcoming, homey vibe. There is no Afghan food around here that compares. This will always be our favorite spot for special occasions. If you haven't been here yet, you're missing out.

San Mateo, in my opinion, is one of the most perfect places to live when it comes to weather. Always sunny, usually hovering around that sweet spot of 74 or 75 degrees, safe, walkable, and right in between Burlingame and the rest of the Peninsula. Everything felt easy to get to, and downtown San Mateo really came alive over the years. Maybe it grew a little too fast toward the end, but there's no denying they did an incredible job building up that area. Curry Up Now started as a food truck, and I'll admit--I was one of those people chasing food trucks on Twitter back in the day. So when they opened their brick-and-mortar in downtown San Mateo, I was thrilled. They picked the perfect location. You can hop off the Caltrain, grab a bite, meet friends, catch an Uber, or head back to the garage and be on your way. It's lively, walkable, and always has something going on. My go-to was usually the thali plate. I know they have a lot of creative and innovative items on the menu, but I tend to stick with the tried and true. The thali lets you sample a little bit of everything, and it always felt like a solid, satisfying meal. The chutneys alone were worth the visit--tamarind, garlic, and that bright green one with a real kick. I love spicy food, so I never held back. Another bonus at this location was the full bar, which made it a fun place to meet friends and hang out for a bit. The outdoor seating was also a big plus--very much that California lifestyle where you can sit outside almost year-round and just enjoy the day. It's especially great with a group because you can order a bunch of dishes and share. Prices were reasonable, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the whole place had a casual, welcoming energy. Nothing pretentious--just good food, good service, and a steady flow of people coming and going. I moved away in 2023, and this is definitely one of those spots I miss. If you're passing through on Caltrain or spending time in downtown San Mateo, it's absolutely worth stopping by. Curry up, eat well, travel safe--and don't skip the chutneys.

It was the last event in a weekend celebrating a family birthday, and Broadway Masala offered the perfect balance of special occasion without being too formal. I realize many restaurants don't like to deal with such large groups, but everyone at Broadway Masala was welcoming and friendly. We ordered double servings of every vegan main dish, and the non-vegans among us ordered a few additional dishes. Everything I tried was excellent, and service was also efficient. The price was ridiculously reasonable, all things considered, and overall, the experience could not have been better.
