Goat karahi
Sho R.

I stopped by for lunch on a weekend. The place was not busy. Goat karahi was tender and flavorful. I took it with a plain naan. Tandoori chicken leg and chicken biryani were good as well. I also had a Mango lassi. Complimentary Tea was ok. Owner seems to be in business for a long time, and is the second generation.

I've been going to the Sunnyvale location for years ever since Shalimar closed down. The owner (the brother of the San Mateo location) told me about the newly opened San Mateo location I decided to give it a try. The location is convenient for those taking Caltrain because it's within walking distance from the Hillsdale Caltrain station. The restaurant is on El Camino next to many small businesses so parking is mostly street parking. It's close to the 25th Ave business/restaurant district so it's got competitions. The location is not large so I think the ideal number of people is a party of 1-6. The ordering is efficient and there is free tea. I'm sure there is free water but the water flasks are not in the frig. Note that this is Northern Indian/Pakistani food so order meat as this is not some southern vegetarian place. When I go by myself I usually order the signature tandoori chicken legs with a butter naan. I believe those are my favorite and the flavors are not what you can get from other Indian restaurants. This location today has too much spice on the chicken but it's still delicious. The legs are tender and extremely juicy unlike most other Indian tandoori chicken places. Order legs if you are a chicken connoisseur. Service is friendly and approachable.

The owner was there taking orders, and he was friendly and helpful. We told him we don't like food coloring, and so he was able to make menu suggestions and accommodated our request. We ordered Samosa Chaat, Garlic Naan, Chicken Biryani, Chicken Kebob, and Chicken Palak. The dishes were made of fresh ingredients and with good recipes. The portion sizes were generous and so it was a good value. The restaurant is casual. We got our own napkins and utensils. There was also a set-up for free chai tea.

Tandori Chicken & Naan...

Fabulous Tandori chicken & roti!!! Been to Packwan & Shalimar and this is tops for me. It's a real treat to have an authentic restaurant like this in San Mateo. Free chai too like old times! Note: Parallel parking on El Camino is limited during lunch, but better in evening.

Plain Naan

Excellent place. I go all the way down to Sunnyvale branch from but glad it's closer. This one is all brand new and brighter than the other location.

Would always go to the location in Sunnyvale so happy that they added a location closer to home, real good food.

Last night, my sister, daughter and I were looking for a halal place to eat when we coincidentally passed by this place. The service was excellent and staff were super friendly. We ordered a lamb biryani, chicken biryani, chicken masala and naan. Everything was delicious. We had some yummy, complimentary chai as we waited and agreed that the next time we're in the area we would have to go back God willing.

You cannot go wrong with ANY of those. I'm not a vodka drinker and all of their HH drinks are pretty much vodka based, but they're delicious! We have had chicken madras, chicken biryani, and garlic/regular Naan and it was all delicious. You can choose your spicy level. Come in during the week for their HH which ends at 6:30pm and you cannot go wrong. My husband and I share with our toddler daughter and we all leave very satisfied. The service is also superb. We everyone is nice and welcoming and you are taken care of. The atmosphere is kid friendly and quiet enough to talk with each other but not super quiet that it is awkward. You cannot go wrong with a meal here. Ohhh and we happens to try the rice pudding one day and that was delicious! Although I was skeptical at first.

Very flavorful and creamy. The chicken was tender. Overall, Rasoi is a good restaurant for some delicious Indian food. The food is good and the ambiance is quiet. They also have a good seating arrangement.

I came in this past Saturday (in the rain and recovering from surgery) because I just needed to be at my favorite restaurant. The moment we walked in, they greeted us warmly and still remembered us, even though we hadn't been in for about three years. That kind of care means everything. The food is unmatched. The lamb is incredible. The potato appetizer with the meat sauce is our all-time favorite. The shrimp on the combination skewers are huge and full of flavor. The warm bread and perfectly cooked rice make every meal feel comforting and special. The service is amazing, the family who owns it is so kind, and the whole place has a welcoming, homey vibe. There is no Afghan food around here that compares. This will always be our favorite spot for special occasions. If you haven't been here yet, you're missing out.

Aside from a bit of cumin, I really can't even distinguish the various spices they used. Deep fried salt and pepper cauliflowers were very crispy and came with some kind of white sauce, maybe ranch? Opens until late so it's a good choice for those nights when you want something to eat after most restaurants close for the night and you don't want fast food. I'll gladly come back, even if it's just for those dishes. Other items also look good so I'm sure I'll be back to sample more goodies in time.

The space is pretty small and casual with an extensive menu of Indo-Asian, Indian, Nepalese and Chinese food. I like the Gobi (cauliflower). It's breaded and sauced up Manchurian style. I've also had the lamb curry which had nuances of exotic spices and was great with basmati rice and roti. They also had a mushroom soup on the menu. It had good taste, but the viscosity was more like a gravy than a soup. I couldn't bring myself to finish it-too much cream and flour or whatever thickening ingredient was used. We wanted to get a bottle of rose which they did not have. They also did not have a bottle of savignon blanc on the menu. So we just enjoyed a couple glasses. The people here are super nice and attentive. The food is exotic with lots of east Asian Indian flavors. This is not a dinner spot for me though. It's too "carby" with thick sauces, fried dishes, rice and noodles. You might stroll into Urban Momo late night or ordering delivery though!

We were a group of eight, which gave us the perfect excuse to try a wide variety of dishes. The customer service was outstanding, our server was very attentive, gave great recommendations, and even helped us avoid over-ordering by letting us know when we had enough food. They also suggested the right number of naans for our group, and they were spot on. One of the highlights was trying Rumali Roti for the first time. It paired beautifully with the curries, and I am officially a fan! It's such a unique type of roti that not many Indian restaurants offer. For appetizers, we enjoyed the Gobi Manchurian, Lamb Kebabs, and Bhatti Ka Paneer. For entrées, we tried the Goat Curry, Eggplant dish, Fig & Walnut Koftas, Butter Chicken, and Wok-Fried Shrimp. Every dish was flavorful, beautifully prepared, and had the perfect balance of spices, not too spicy and not too mild. The desserts were soo good ! The Jalebi with Rabri (most restaurants only offer Jalebi but this pair was delicious), Thandai Tres Leches Cake, and Chocolate Molten Cake were absolutely incredible, easily a 10/10 (or more!). The seating was a little tight for eight people, but it was still comfortable and didn't affect our overall experience. Great food, excellent service, and a wonderful place to celebrate special occasions. We will definitely be coming back!

It comes with several traditional sides. I really liked that they offer pappad as I am gluten free. The lamb was boneless and tender. The butter chicken was juicy and well flavored. The dal was on the creamier side and the saag was flavorful. So overall, the food was great. As there is always room for improvement, I wish they would offer an option that you could have meat and paneer, rather than two meats. Also, I wish they offered a gluten free option for dessert as gulab jamun contained flour. Service was great, parking is based on luck, and prices are very reasonable!
