I've been a customer for years and really appreciate the caring and competent service. I got a lot of support through the last golden years of my border collie, who needed help with arthritis pain. Also great support through knee surgeries and the tragic early loss of our latest dog. This is a busy clinic but they have never not been available for minor emergencies. Once my dogs nail fell clean off and I sent photos and got advice just 15 mins before close on a Friday. They genuinely care and are very attentive. I used to live in MN a few years ago, and this was the vet I chose to take my dog to. Absolutely loved the service, & care. My dog, Atlas had dental cleaning, and work / tooth extractions. Everything was extremely affordable, and vet was informative. I've taken my dogs there for a couple of times over the years. I suppose this clinic is OK if you have a dog with low needs and just need to do regular check ups and vaccinations. However, if your dog were to become sick or has a more immediate medical need, be prepared to wait at least two months for an appointment. read more

I wasn't happy with the service at Shady Oak Vet. I had one bad experience with a rude woman at the front desk as well as one of the vet techs. I had always gone to Nokomis Vet because we lived close and then moved. (Nokomis Vet is amazing, btw). The receptionist and vet tech at Shady Oak were not warm and welcoming at all. I think that hit harder too because we were brining in our new rescue and had lost our previous fur baby in 2021. It can be an emotional experience going to the vet. The staff definitely did their jobs treating my dog but I think it's also important to be personable with customers. read more

I have been going to this clinic for 9 years and have NEVER had a problem with staff, vets, managers...etc....Until Now....I have an older French Bulldog named Melvin and I received an email asking if I would be interested in purchasing heartworm / flea meds and I would receive a discount if I purchased a year. I called and spoke to Maggie A who I guess is their office manager. Before I start to write what happened I can say that the phone call started off with her being somewhat rude, short and uninviting. I asked Maggie for pricing and she asked for my last name which I gave to her. She said Melvin has not had a heartworm test, which he has. Maggie looked further in his chart and said "I see that he did have one" but back in 2021" I then asked her if he needs to have a heartworm test every single year. She said 'Yes'. I am sorry but this doesn't make sense. I told her that Melvin lives in an Apartment building and only goes for short walks. I said he is rarely outside around mosquitoes. I then went on asking why this clinic requires a heartworm test every single year when some other clinics do not. Remember I cannot purchase meds unless Melvin had a $75 dollar test every year. I then went on to explain to Maggie that I have another Frenchie and that I take her to another clinic and they do not require a heartworm test if you signed a waiver. Maggie said "I doubt there are any clinics that do not require this test".. I told Maggie that Inver Grove Heights Animal Hospital doesn't require one. Maggie then extremely rudely said rushing the conversation..."Well we can certainly transfer Melvin's records to Inver Grove Heights Animal Hospital and you can get your meds there then". I couldn't believe the rudeness for a manager at a fairly well known Vet clinic would say something like that knowing that was not my point in explaining this. I am sorry but that was unacceptable to be treated that way. I then said regretfully, "That you don't have to be a bitxch" She hung up on me. I immediately called back to speak to the manager who I didn't know it was her at the time and after being put on hold for 5 minutes, Maggie answers and practically screaming at me..'You are done here, we are transferring Melvins records to Inver Grove Heights Animal Hospital" and hung up again. I called back and someone else answered and I asked if I could speak to the owner or someone above Maggie. I was put on hold for another 5 minutes. I reviewed their website and found out that Barb L is the owner and head vet. I called back and asked for her but she apparently was not in and supposedly didn't have a private email nor would they give me hers. I do regret calling her this but Maggie was out of line and completely unprofessional and rude to begin the conversation. I guess we will see what response Barb will give me but I don't think I will go back because I refuse to be treated in this matter because I asked a simple question. Buyer Beware I guess. EDIT Response to Barb below. Barb you know that is an absolute LIE. I have NEVER treated your staff, your front end staff, your vets, your techs EVER in a disrespectful manner. Large clinic with multiple doctors. Big open exam rooms. Huge waiting area to keep dogs and cats separate while waiting for appointments. Very reasonable pricing, the best in the area. Easy to get it for tech appointments like nail trims, anal glands, etc. Shady Oak offers some urgent care appointments daily, but not an emergency clinic, which is fine with all the other emergency clinics in the area. read more

This would be a 5 if we were only rating the vet techs, and it would be a 1 if we were only rating the front desk. The front desk has maybe one nice person, and the rest are super rude, and act like they are the only vet in town. As far as the vets themselves: The middle aged white woman vet is super nice, but she seems to have a possible undiagnosed attention deficit, and also judged our family for cooking chicken, and brown rice for our dog rather than serving him processed food. First she said our dog looked absolutely amazing, and asked what we feed him. Then when she found out it was not part of the processed pet food cult, she chastised us. Her lack of an open mind in this regard didn't seem to be in a the best interest of our dog's overall health. The older white haired gentleman vet was amazing - like dog whisperer amazing - but you can no longer book with him. As I said, the vet techs are amazing, and I know they are overworked. I hope they all find love, and peace with better employers, but honestly the best day at this vet was the day we transferred over to another vet who actually cares about our pet, and our business. I hope they can one day get their act together, but for now, there are much better places to have your pet cared for, and the new vet we now go to is even less expensive. I have lived in New York City for six years with my dog, and twice a year I take a trip to Minnesota to go to Shady Oak Vet for all my dog's medical needs, because having tried over twenty vets in four different states, I have yet to find one as good as Dr. Barb Leppke and her team at Shady Oak Vet Clinic. My family has been taking our pets to Dr. Barb for as long as she has been in practice. We followed Dr. Barb from a clinic in South Mpls to the Shady Oak Road location to the Minnetonka Blvd. location. I can not say enough good things about this clinic, the vets, vet techs and everyone who works there. The level of care that Dr. Barb provides each and every one of her patients in unsurpassed. The team at Shady Oak has treated our dogs, cats, gerbils, parakeets and pet mouse. We have gone to them for everything from routine visits to dental treatments, TPLO surgery, acupuncture and cancer treatments and many, many more health issues and concerns. They have been the gentle hands to help guide our beloved animals across the rainbow bridge and have been equally attentive and caring to their human clients too. Dr. Barb never rushes through a visit (sometimes even running over your scheduled time - but she does this for each and every client!) answers every question you have, and I know that every recommendation she makes is in the best interest of my animal, with consideration to cost and the overall well-being of my animal. The rest of the folks at the clinic, specifically Tyler, Maggi, Chelsea, Dr. Sharon, Dr. Molly, Dr. Chris, Susan, and Marlo are unsurpassed in their knowledge and care for animals and clients alike. I routinely call them with questions/concerns and they ALWAYS, always make time to speak with me and help despite the fact that I only make in-person appointments twice a year. They are not only exemplary in their jobs but also some of the nicest, kindest, big-hearted people I've ever met. I agree wholeheartedly with the person who complained about the wait and not being greeted right away. I have a mobility impairment, so I can't just stand in line; it hurts my feet too much. The prices are good, but they overbook. To get an emergency dental was a 2 1/2 week wait. EDIT: When I originally posted this, in my grief, I thought that Zach had lost weight between the pre-op physical and the date of his surgery. THIS WAS INCORRECT. At the time, I felt that Shady Oak should have talked to me about whether I wanted to continue with the procedure when in fact, nothing had changed since the initial consent. He did lose weight after his dental surgery, but it had nothing to do with surgery. He had a fast growing and aggressive intestinal tumor. I apologize to Shady Oak for my previous negative review. My wife and I have been taking our golden retriever puppy here for the past few months. A few of the reasons why I like Shade Oak Vet Clinic: - no nonsense, fair, and clearly-stated pricing. They will always give you a firm quote on what something costs, and their prices appear to be on the lower-end for the Twin Cities metro area. My wife priced out 4 different vets in the metro (University of MN; Shady Oak; Waconia; and Countryside), and Shady Oak was the best overall value of them all. In some cases, they were significantly lower than the competition. For instance, spaying our 6-month old golden cost us $218. A general exam with one of the vets is $51. One word to the frugal of you out there: make sure you are explicit about only wanting the necessary care/treatments when your dog receives care there (i.e. skip the stuff that is optional). I know, I know: I'm a horrible dog owner for saying that. My point is, why pay for the ancillary care/shots/meds when they aren't necessary? Owning a dog is expensive enough as it is, so why make it even pricier? (for further reading on that subject, I highly recommend the book Scared Poopless, which you can buy on Amazon) Shady Oak Vet Clinic does a nice job of not making you feel bad when you decline the recommended-but-not-required kinds of preventative care. - friendly and knowledgable vet techs and vet doctors. We have had great experiences with each person that has worked with our dog. - a welcoming, clean environment at the clinic. They do a really nice job of keeping things clean and classy there. - honesty. Today, we brought our golden in for a general exam, to review some troublesome symptoms we have been noticing (signs of potential hip dysplasia). While our intention was also to pay for x-rays, our vet (Dr. Chris) told us she did not think x-rays would be a good use of our money at this time -- because the dog's hips are not even fully formed yet. In other words, she cautioned us to wait awhile before getting x-rays, even though it would have meant $200 of revenue for the clinic. She was acting in the best interests of us and our dog -- rather than trying to maximize profits (mind you, I believe that acting in the best interests of the clients will ultimately maximize a company's profits...but not always in the short-term). I really appreciated that. The only minor negative I would state is that Shady Oak Vet Clinic is a very busy clinic. While I have never felt rushed by any of the vet technicians or veterinarians, I have at times felt the staff people working at the front desk were a bit over-stressed (not all of them, but one in particular). With a clinic being this busy, you generally need to book appointments about a week out -- but this is no problem at all (and perhaps it is quite normal for any vet clinic). read more

I had the most rude person answer the phone this morning. I was calling in for my girl who has heartworm and kennel cough and this person was so rude, condescending, and was telling me I need to get more information before just calling them. After she was done yelling at me I explained that I had all of the information I needed and was told to call and setup an appointment. At that point she took my name and number and told me to call back later. I was so frustrated at how mean this person was as I'm just trying to get care for my sick girl, so I called back, ensured I was talking to the same person and then asked for her name. She asked what the issue was and I just said that I wanted to know the name of who I talked to earlier (which she confirmed was her). She continued to try to divert the conversation but she finally whispered a name. I later found out that she had lied to me and given me the name of one of her co-workers. Unbelievable how rude and self-centered this person was. Everyone else I have come in contact with at this clinic has been very nice, helpful, and caring. What you would expect from people who work with sick animals, but because of this one person I no longer feel comfortable calling the office. read more

I have been a client at this clinic for the past year. Communication is a real problem. If you have low needs animals, I think this clinic does a good job. If you have high needs animals, not so much. My dog had a distraction osteotomy here and the recovery and meds have been a nightmare due to lack of organization and bad communication. Dr. Barb, Chelsea and Ashley have not returned phone calls and requests in a timely manner and do not communicate well. I often have to follow up on a communication to see when the communication will be followed up on. I have left many a message to call back and find no notes had been written or the person it had been handed off to left without addressing it or passing it off. My dog had a bad reaction to meds and nobody seemed to care or have to time to help. About 3 years ago we started taking our newly adopted puppy to Shady Oak because they work with Secondhand Hounds and we had a free visit. Back then, the staff were SO amazing, caring and knowledgeable (5-STAR!). Sarah was so patient with us while we worked through having our first puppy and all the questions and concerns we had. And Dr. Chris was kind and also made us feel like the staff really cared about our pet. Flash forward to this year, we continue to vet there with our 3 year old dog, who is really only seen annually now, but we recently got another puppy, again through SHH. This time around has been much different. We have had multiple visits with the new puppy in the last month due to a UTI, turned prepuce infection, and the place just feels different. We saw a new Dr. who seemed much less like he cared to be there. The staff at the front desk seem frazzled and kept getting things mixed up (appointments set for vaccines apparently not yet due even though I sent the vet recs , wrong file pulled, etc.) I called to check-in on our pup, who was dropped off for an exam with Dr. Molly (who seems very sweet!) but when I called to check on the status 5 hours later, the person who answered (name wasn't provided) seemed annoyed and short with me and told me they didn't know when he'd be ready to go home. I don't feel like the same level of care is being given as has been in the past. While most of the staff there are still very, very nice, I feel like potentially they may be understaffed? Overworked? I don't know, but it isn't the same anymore and that makes me sad. I may be looking to find a new vet soon, one closer to home, more intimate, as the drive out of the way isn't feeling worth it anymore. read more

About 3 weeks ago our cat Squeakers passed from old age on the way to the office on a Saturday morning. As always they took very good care of us. What was amazing is the card we got from the clinic after she passed. At least 17 of the staff put a personnel note to us on the card which was very heart warming. We could really feel the love. I've been going to Shady Oak Vet Clinic for over 25 years. Dr Barb is amazing and always seems to go above and beyond to make sure your pet gets the best care possible. The only thing I would consider giving them less than 5 stars for is that sometimes the appointments get backed up, but when this happens to me I just remember that whatever appointment needed extra time, Dr Barb didn't rush it. I'm VERY picky about where I take my pets. I'm pickier about their Doctors than I am for myself. Seriously. So, when I say that I like this place.. I really mean I freaking love this place!!! The staff is wonderful... caring, thoughtful, and clearly experienced. The vets are all fantastic and really take the time to know you & your pet. Recently one of my dogs passed away suddenly (after being in & out of Shady Oak for a few days) .. and the way they cared for my Charlie during his visits & then again after his death.. was really impressive & touching to me. Their prices are on par with other vets (actually, a little lower) and they are very cost conscious.. always telling you what things (vaccines, tests, etc) cost before doing them. Did you know owning a dog is freaking expensive? I shudder to think what a couple kids are gonna cost me eventually. Anyway, it was time to take Friday, my 7 year old, overweight, golden retriever in for his annual vaccinations/check up/heartworm tests. I am happy to report that my baby has lost 8 pounds since our last visit...still another 10 pounds to go but what a victory! To my main point, vet visits, shots, tests, heartworm pills, and flea/tick treatments easily run a couple hundred dollars a year. And that's assuming your pup has no other problems. Friday cracked a tooth over Christmas this past year (probably from eating all the bone shaped cookies my Grandma make for him--and we wonder why he's 20 pounds overweight). I brought him here to have the tooth extracted for a pawltry $300 (the cheapest I could find). The vet ended up examining the tooth and said it didn't need to come out, and only charged me $50 for the tests they ran in prep. On our most recent visit, I mentioned Friday seemed to limp a little on one paw. The vet looked at it and said she could do an xray to confirm it wasn't broken or fractured, but said it appears to be some early onset arthritis, to give him a couple baby aspirin after a tough workout, and to keep an eye on it for now. I love that they don't take advantage of my love for my dog and recommend tests and procedures that are not really necessary and are super expensive--especially in an economy where they could probably use to sell a few more products and services. They give me honest opinions about what he needs to be healthy and happy, and of course they shower him with love the whole time he's there. Priceless. read more

After getting a good report from my sister-in-law, we took our 9-year-old yellow lab to Shady Oak Clinic for his annual checkup and were impressed. Our initial motivation was to find a vet closer to home - and less expensive - but this place also came through on customer service, patience, "ambiance" and knowledge. We've seen two different vets - sorry, names escape me - and left both visits feeling like our furry kid was well-treated and made comfortable - even during a terrible ear-infection exam. Ok, this is a really old review, but my experiences with Dr. Barb still stand out 10 years later. So much so that she's the vet I recommend whenever someone asks. And sometimes when they don't. She came recommended by a local rat expert and I brought several of my pet rats to her. She wasn't convenient to where I lived. I had to take cabs, or multiple buses, or beg rides from friends. But boy she was worth it. I just wish I'd found her sooner as I had some bad experiences at other places. It can be really hard to find a good vet for a pet rat. I've been to vets that didn't know about rats and I've been to vets that didn't care about rats. Not Dr. Barb. She clearly cared about my little fur guys as much as she cared about her bigger patients. I was impressed by both her practical smarts and her compassion. Five stars just isn't enough. read more

Having recently moved to Minnetonka we needed to find a new vet for our lab. Decided to try Shady Oak Veterinary Clinic after reading some reviews on various sites - and I am very happy I went there. Easy appointment setting, very accommodating and understanding in more urgent situations, same day appts too. By far the cleanest clinic I have been too, no pet smell, my dog even likes it! I have brought a variety of pets to Shady Oak Vet Clinic for a number of years. My current pet (a dog) has always been treated with a genuine affection and the staff definitely care about what is going on with your pet. I have found the staff to be very willing to talk about any issues that your pet is having and they are good about explaining their point of view. Often times, you'll get an explanation in which they refer to their own pet's experiences. I can't say I would know how the prices compare to other vet clinics but I do know that what I have paid has been worth it in terms of feeling my pet is receiving quality care. One other note. I have had a couple of cats "put to sleep" at this vet and the staff are very compassionate about the situation. As many pet owners can attest to, a pet is pretty much a member of your family so when it is time to put your pet to sleep, it is a very emotionally difficult situation for all involved. The staff's compassion in those moments is excellent and I think that says a lot about the quality of their business. read more

When I wrote my last review I had just switched over to this vet and was relatively pleased with the service I received from them. The service and cost to bring my dog here were enough for me to leave my original vet and permanently take my pup here. The new office is not only larger than their original location but it's also closer to my house which is an added bonus. Over the past year and a half my pup has had to have two major surgeries to fix injuries he's had to both of his knees. Not only were the surgeries really effective for my dog's recovery but were also very cost competitive. All the staff here are really friendly and actually take the time to get to know you and your pet. Having to have invasive surgeries done is never fun for a pet or its owner. That being said, the staff at Shady Oak truly have made these difficult times easy and coached me through the recovery process. If my pup could give SOVC a rating he would definitely give them four paws of approval along with a wet nose and wagging tail. read more

Im assuming they are overworked since they discouraged me from making an appointment because they are so booked. My experience with Vet Clinics is not good. I've been used to stale environments, vets and techs who missed Personality 101, and try to up-sell me on every service, food, and scientifically formulated treat known to dog...Shady Oak Vet Clinic is nothing like this. We brought home a dachshund puppy, Eddie Vedder, in October. We needed to ensure that he received his rounds of shots and that he was overall as healthy as we thought he was so we set up a first visit to Shady Oak. Walking in the door for the first time, I liked the warmness of the office...not over the top...but not stale white...and it didn't smell clinical. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful. We met with the Veterinarian, Dr. Barb, on our first visit. Dr Barb is very nice, and told us everything we needed to know about our little Eddie. I liked that I didn't feel like we were being sold every service under the sun. Eddie was given just the shots he needed, and his checkup. The bill was well within reason, and it was easy to set up his 2nd follow up visit for his next shots. Our second visit was just as pleasant as the first. We were helped out by one of the technicians, Tyler, who was very excited to have a Doxie in his care! It felt good to have a staff member as excited to see our little boy as we are each day. Tyler gave Eddie his shots, a bunch of treats, and a lot of hugs. I think he would have taken him home with him if given the chance! It feels good to have found a vet clinic that is so warm and inviting, where I don't feel like a number...or that I am at a used car sales lot being thrown pitch after pitch to buy this or that. I've been taking my dogs here for almost 4 years now, and just love this place. The staff are unbelievably awesome...I mean, I guess I would be too if I got to hang out with animals all day, but they are just great! The vet techs have always gone out of their way to make my extremely fearful dachshund at ease when in for her check-ups. They make me feel like it's no nuisance at all and are still so sweet to her, even when I'm completely embarrassed by the fight she puts up! My pups see Dr. Barb every time, and she is awesome too - such a great listener and you can tell she loves what she does. The new location is spacious, fresh and welcoming. The front desk customer service is the worst I've ever experienced. I walked in 10 min early for my appointment was yelled at after standing there for a minute or 2. Saying "We will be right with you!" So I sat down. 5 or so minutes went by, so I walked up letting to know that I was there. I just went to Shady Oak Vet for the first time this week. We were seen quickly and I was so impressed. My black lab mix is my baby girl and is a shy rescue. The front desk staff is why it got 4 stars instead of 5. They were disinterested, not very friendly, and didn't seem approachable. The vet, however, is a completely different story. I showed up day of thinking my girl had an ear infection when initially going for a vaccination. She was so understanding, did the most thorough exam my girl has ever had, and the appointment was very efficient. Even checking the gunk in her ear under the microscope took just minutes instead of having to wait 15 minutes wondering if they are ever coming back. She was friendly, gave my girl lots of hugs and made us both feel comfortable! She only gave me the medicine that was needed and didn't try to get me to have all this unnecessary stuff a healthy 5 year old dog doesn't need. When I checked out I was pleasantly surprised and the total was much less than I was anticipating. I had a question about a cream she had recommended and called and was called back within 2 minutes with an answer. This will now be my girls vet and any other pet I get as well! My best buddy, my Black Labrador, was due for a visit to the vet for a check up and some shots. After checking out the reviews on Yelp.com, I knew that Shady Oak Veterinary Clinic was the place to go. Booking an appointment was easy, even with short notice, and the gal who scheduled my appointment was very friendly. The atmosphere in the clinic was much warmer and friendlier than other veterinary clinics I've been to in the past. There was contemporary pet-themed art and sunny colors on the wall. My dog had fun visiting with some pets while we filled out some initial paperwork, too. Doctor Barb was awesome with my dog and I really appreciated that she took the time to learn about my dog and what kind of activities she likes to do. The vet. tailored the shots to my pup's needs, not the normal laundry list approach. I also appreciated Doctor Barb's extensive knowledge about labradors, their mannerisms, and how they age. Love the Vet-techs here. They go out of their way to make sure my pup feels safe and comfortable. The clinic itself is very welcoming, never too busy and always willing to work with you on the obscure requests that pet owners have. The vets themselves always seem to have time to talk to the owners and you can tell they really care for the pets. Prices are VERY reasonable as well as the ability to make appts to get in. I hope I never have to take my pup here for any emergency, but I wouldn't second guess any decision to take him to Shady Oak Vet if he needed it. read more
