She came upon the fact that the Portland Farmers' Market moves indoors for the winter season and we made plans to visit this past Saturday. While the winter market is smaller than the summer market, it still managed to fill the gymnasium at the girl's academy. We came late in the day, and many vendors apologized for how picked over they were, but we still managed to fulfill a good portion of our shopping needs. I'd say the score of the day was the dilly beans I came across as we were about to leave. I'm sure I scared the poor fella as I quickly grabbed the jar and excitedly handed him the money. I'll probably have to make the 40 mile trip next Saturday in hopes of replenishing my pickled green bean dreams.

It's indoors and year-round, and it's a combination of a farmer's market and craft fair, with live music and a few vendors selling breakfast. Sometimes there's a furniture maker selling things and it's no surprise to see someone spinning yarn. It's all here. The market can get crowded on a nice day (both inside and in the parking lot) and the best produce goes early, so try not to procrastinate too much. It's not the easiest place to find on your first visit but it's worth the hunt and most people leave with bags of stuff. On my last trip I came home with parsnips, brussels sprouts, and honey but every time it's different. It's on the small side but has gorgeous produce grown and picked or other goods baked or created by the people who sell them to you. I bought a couple of gorgeous apples whose name I forget, but the one I just ate was fabulous and I wish I'd bought more. I was tempted to drive back, but resisted because thunder and heavy rain was predicted, though it didn't materialize. We bought some garlic herb goat cheese from Four Hearts Farm and a blueberry scone from another stall. The baker of the scones also had pies and breads, more sweet than savory, muffins and other assorted baked goods. We admired some stunningly gorgeous plum tomatoes and I wish we'd bought them. Finally, we bought some white nectarines, so far superior to the ones at Hanaford as to seem like another species entirely. It was a marvelous farmers' market w/ other produce we didn't buy because we're not home and can't use it, like eggplant and other vegetables. Alan just ate one of the nectarines and pronounced it juicy and delicious. "I took a bath in it!", he said.

Here you can usually find what you need for your produce needs between two to three vendors that primarily do produce. Since it's small you don't always have the most choice to "shop around" on costs, but it's all fresh! Other tents have gourmet jams, loose leaf tea, breads/baked goods, pasta sauce and maple products, meat, beauty products/soap and fresh cut flowers among other things you can usually find as well. One thing that I can't find here that disappoints me is any delicious local cheese or other dairy products so don't count on finding that. Bottom line: worth stopping by to support local and get some good stuff!

This was the BEST lobster roll I've ever had. It was full of large pieces of lobster and had a light lemon and chive flavor but it didn't overpower the lobster. Anyways, numerous vendors gather in the field owned my Crystal Farms to sell their veggies, fruits, meats, frozen meals, breads, mushrooms, seasonings, yogurts, pastries, flowers, and items handmade by a seamstress. While you meander among the tents you can listen to fiddlers or singers while sipping coffee from a local coffee truck. Just make sure to grab a scone or cookie to nibble on with it to complete the experience. There is also a flower garden across the street that you can walk over to admire.
