I have been very disappointed with my experience at this school. From my perspective, the school…read moreseems to put a strong emphasis on fundraising and getting families to donate money. During fundraising campaigns, families are repeatedly encouraged and pressured to contribute, and it can feel like there is a constant expectation to give more. What is especially concerning is the way students are rewarded for fundraising. Students who raise more money or whose families contribute are given incentives such as ice cream, burgers, glow parties, and other rewards. While I understand wanting to encourage fundraising, I don't believe children should feel that they are being rewarded or left out based on how much money their families can contribute. Another thing that I find particularly troubling is how the fundraising is displayed in the classroom. Teachers have a race-style game on the board with all of the students' names, and students move forward as they raise certain amounts of money to earn different rewards. This means that if a family does not donate or is unable to raise as much money, the child can visibly remain behind their classmates on the board, seeing that difference every day. As a parent, I find this very uncomfortable. Whether intentional or not, I believe this can make children feel embarrassed, singled out, or like they are falling behind simply because their families are not contributing as much money. Elementary-age children should not have to carry the emotional burden of their family's ability or inability to donate. Fundraising should be about supporting the school, not creating a visible ranking system among children based on how much money they raise. There are many ways a school can recognize fundraising efforts without making children feel like they are being rewarded or punished based on their family's financial contributions. I hope the school will reconsider this approach and find ways to support its financial needs without putting so much pressure on families or making children feel left out. A school should be a place where children feel included, valued, and supported regardless of how much money their families are able to contribute.

What sets DCA apart is the strong sense of home and family--it's more than just a school. The staff is incredibly supportive and full of love, always there when we need them. He plays every sport because it is a small school and all the kids join in. Many of the teachers attend the sports events to show support for their students. It's is such a great feeling to know that your child feels totally supported by their school and their teachers. He has really grown and matured as a student in this remarkable environment and he adores the teaching staff. We could not be happier with our experience at Palm Valley School and we find it to be worth every penny. We have toured other schools in the area both for grammar school and high school and there is no other option in our opinion. Having relocated temporarily during the pandemic and we thought we might stay for one year but we decided to relocate our family from Marina del Rey solely because our son is so happy and thriving academically of Palm Valley School. Yes, we left the beach because nothing is better than a happy thriving kid!! This school would be 50k in the Los Angeles area and the class sizes would be far larger. Additionally, the families at PVS are down to earth and the PVS community in general is very warm and welcoming. We plan on staying until our son graduates. My only regret is that he did not start at Palm Valley School in kindergarten. PVS may be the best parenting decision we have made thus far.

I love that I have an opportunity to volunteer within the classroom, and that they have a very active community of parents. I served as a room parent this year, and was thrilled with just how involved the parents in our grade level have been!! It's been such a treat! We love Family Game Night. We love the Fall Festival. The Parent Association hosts several "Meet and Mingle" gatherings throughout the year. It is SO easy to get involved here. Overall, it's a very welcoming vibe! It really makes our school feel like a family.

I'm very glad they use a classroom model (unlike in-home daycares) so kids can treat "daycare" like "school:. Akira even got enrolled in their optional gymnastics program! It's been a great place to see her grow. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff. Frankly, the staff is the reason I chose First School over the other daycares I considered. My first staff interaction was with Ms. Vanessa - who manages the front desk and enrollment. Ms Vanessa is the one who gave me the tour and introduced me to the teachers who would be working with my daughter. She spent about 20 mins one-on-one with me before I even committed to sending my child to this school. It was a great introduction! All the teachers are wonderful. Ms Jenn, Ms Trina, Ms. Marlene, Ms. Myra - just to name a few. They are calm, kind, and gentle. And - unlike her last school - they don't have a ton of turn over with a new teacher every 2 months. First School has a built a real community and I'm so glad my daughter gets to be a part of it.

My daughter told me she was routinely told to 'just hold it' when she asked to go to the bathroom. I spoke with them about this and they said they gave her time to go, yet she still developed another bladder infection. She told me the second time that she *was* asking her teachers to go and they were still telling her to hold it. My older daughter confirmed this was happening. This was really upsetting and we left shortly after this point. Another incident that happened was bullying by one of the teachers Ms. Shama. She was very hard on my daughter who was struggling to learn her numbers in Kindergarten. It got so bad that my daughter started having nightmares about learning numbers. I was concerned enough to write a note to the teacher asking kindly to please understand she was still learning. My daughter later reported to me Ms. Shama refused to let her participate in any numbers or reading activities after that because she said 'your mom said you can't do any activities', which was of course not what I said in my note or in the quick f2f chat we had. I was really disappointed that an adult would treat a 5 year old this way.
