Over the years the BHOC's movie nights have varied widely (Aug thru Oct). Check their website around July next year for next season's updates: number of films, screening venues, etc. This annual event is different from other SF outdoors cinema events. First, because it's not strictly outdoors, with a few indoor venues. Secondly, it's much smaller, the crowd includes all ages but most are older adults, and the movies are usually documentaries (a few stop motion animation too) - all are less than 30 min long (1 or 2 exceptions in previous years), some are less than 5 min. No commercial movies here, all are independent films, with many made by Bernal Heights residents. It's like the academy awards for local film makers. List of venues used: El Rio bar, 3158 Mission St. Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center - 515 Cortland Ave. Bernal Heights Public Library - 500 Cortland Ave. Kingmond Young Photography Studio - 416 Cortland Ave. The Liberty Café - 410 Cortland Ave. Progressive Grounds - 400 Cortland Ave. Inclusions Gallery - 627 Cortland Ave. Bernal Heights Park ("Top of the Hill" venue) Precita Park ("Under the Stars" venue)

We checked out the Short Block 5 session on Sunday afternoon, which included Midnight Movie Club, The Intention Invention, The Devil's Flea, Unknown User, Tapeworm, The Falling, The Miracle of You, Lathe, Terror Night, and Kitty & the Viper. My fave was Midnight Movie Club, an awesome mix of suspense, horror, and comedy combined into a 4-minute short absolutely fitting for this event in its eccentricity. The Intention Invention was interesting too, a unique style of animation and amusing story in which a laser gun could be used to reveal people's (and animals') true intentions and thoughts. The short film set was followed by a Q&A with some of the filmmakers and actors on site. Concessions were available along with theater & event merchandise for sale in the lobby. There was no shortage of seating in the auditorium, and good picture and sound. Also, we got to rate each of the movies after the viewing. My bf does not like the idea of rating the various artists' works, but the event entails awards being given in different categories, recognizing the talented filmmakers, so I think it's cool that audience votes are considered.

At their yearly Crossroads festival they have filmmakers in person and premier screenings of works from around the world. I love going to their screenings and seeing the original work of artists. There is nothing commercial or Hollywood here. All of the films are original statements of the artists visions and intriguing trips into their minds and obsessions-- spooky, dreamy, hypnotic and seductive--these films create emotional nuance and connection, and since the filmmakers are often there in person, you can connect with the artists and ask them questions about their films and creative process. So glad this type organization still exists in San Francisco.

I wasn't sure what to expect since it was my first visit and first to come to a private screening. As I walked in there was a check in right behind the person at the entrance was a large screen with the most dynamic scene of a planet as if there was lava coming through pockets and astroids flying around the atmosphere. The visual effects and the screen size was enormous. Some real strict protocols to enter the theatre, a bit too much in my opinion. People were required to empty there purses and leave there water bottles on the counter alongside the wall. I did not bring anything but after the long wait to get in I was super thirsty and asked if I could find water anywhere. I was advise my best bet would be to drink out of the bathroom sink. I was so thirsty I almost did that since I would be in the movie for another 1-2 hours. Unfortunately the water in the bathroom was on auto sensor which would only turn on for 1-2 seconds. Write turning off. And the water was warm. Anyhow I did survive the movie without getting any water. As I walked into the theatre it was mesmerizing I didn't know what I was walking into. The entire building was very modern and sound system was state of the art. Considering I was in the Dolby Center. The seats were very comfy and the quality of the movie and sound system was the best experience Ever. The movie was good great cinematography and story. The acting was amazing and I really enjoyed the movie. A bit of a tear jerky at times as well as exciting, adventurous, scenic, and captivating. The combination of the amazing theatre made the movie very enjoyable. After the movie the three chairs were set up in front of the movie and to my surprise the main character and the director is the movie walked right passed me to enjoy a discussion with the audience. It was so amazing nothing I have ever experience. What an honor! It was an absolute great evening and experience.

This is definitely a drama, but has quite a bit of humor. If you're worried about agit prop or knee-jerk political views, don't be (I don't think Golden Thread even considers that kind of theatre). The characters do have political opinions (and often disagree with each other), but the story is the heart of the play. I would consider seeing this a second time during the run. Someone came with a young kid and it's about a teenager, so it might be okay with a kid who enjoys theatre, maybe 14 or over. Be aware there is some language and blood effects.

Everyone who you come into contact with who works here loves there job and truly wants to make your experience at the Ninth Street screening rooms as pleasant as possible. And what's not to like? Very competitive prices for screening rooms, down right cheap if you ask me. The screening room fits about 75 or so. And along with the screening room space there it also a small lounge area in front where people sometimes have wine or small appetizers for their guests at screening. Justin does a great job of keeping the riff raff out. They have remote entry, so not everyone can get in to your oh-so-exculsive screening (what else would an up and coming film director/producer expect? :)) Whenever I hear anyone say they need a screening space, I always reccommend Ninth Street. And I have no intention of stopping.

I love going to plays where the underlying messages are about life and you walk away feeling like you've learned something meaningful. The theater is very quaint and I like the intimate feel of the smaller theater. I noticed that they organized the play really well in ushering people in their seats and it seems like they won't start the show until everyone is seated.
