I didn't spot any parking right away so I decided to drive through, which turned out to be a great way to see more in a short amount of time. I still got out of my car to walk around a bit when I wanted to see something up close. The area is gorgeous, plenty of shade from the beautiful trees. I only stayed for 20 minutes but it was a perfect and quick way to explore the cemetery. It's also free, so nothing better than that!

They also have a few burial sections for the unknown thru out. The cool thing is you can drive thru most of it, streets are clearly marked. They could do a better job taking care of the grounds. Some of the other well known cemeteries have tours, guides and well take care of... I love going to old cemeteries and wandering around, most of them have so much history. They don't have a office like some of the well known cemeteries with staff. Upon entering the grounds they do have maps and a few thing marked. My advice would be go online and look at a few reviews to get more info if you are looking for something specific. Even the maps need to be redone. Things should be clearly marked, its history. I recommend a visit, review the grounds, maybe things will change in the near future.

We found a peaceful place that could've been better kept. It contained graves that were almost 230 years old! One particular place that carried especially heavy emotions and struck me with an extra heavy weight was the slaves burial place. Many where laid to rest in graves that were either unmarked or had headstones that could barely be read due to the lack of upkeep and time. The feeling of pain and sorrow was thick. We stood there for a long time and honored the many lives lost to the unimaginable horror they experienced at the hands of their "masters." Many of the city's African American clergy were also laid to rest here. It's a strange mix of hope and sadness, but it's definitely a place to go if cemeteries are "your thing."

Definitely worth a stop, and make sure you find the back wall where headstones are mounted. Our…read moretour guide told us that when thousands of Union troops needed campsites during the Civil War, they cleared the headstones in this cemetary to make room for tents. When the war was over, some families didn't remember exactly where the headstones should be so they mounted them to the adjacent brick wall.

The Colonial Park Cemetery has a long history, almost as old as Savannah herself. The first burial occurred at the site of Colonial Park in 1750. For almost 100 years many of the burials which took place in Savannah took place in Colonial Park Cemetery. Many prominent Savannahians were buried in Colonial Park Cemetery. The last burial in Colonial Park took place around 1850. After this time Laurel Grove Cemetery was used as the main Cemetery in Savannah. We strolled around reading about the history of the city. Many of the stones were so old that the engravings could not be read anymore...and there were many stones that referred to Providence or Rhode Island natives or sons. Interesting.

I would give Families First Funeral Care 6 stars if I could, as well as Scott Dixon who was our…read moremain contact there. Our experience with their funeral care for my mom was exceptional and was the complete opposite of the negative experience we had with a funeral home in Savannah that we used for my dad years ago. We felt taken advantage of back then. We learned, too late for our dad, that the funeral industry is rampant with funeral homes that have hidden fees and often push grieving loved ones to choose caskets and services beyond the family's means. Families First is different. They offer clear, upfront pricing with no hidden fees as well as funeral plans that have a wide range of options, including plans that accommodate modest budgets or, like us, families that just prefer a simpler service. FFFC customer service was first rate every step of the way. I was anxious and felt overwhelmed when planning funeral arrangements in the months preceding mom's death. Scott Dixon always put me at ease and gave me great guidance. Over those weeks of planning, I called/emailed him many, many times with numerous questions and special requests. He was endlessly patient, always kind and professional and quick to get back to me if he wasn't available, even when he was on a weekend trip! I remember hearing back from him that weekend and it makes me smile. I remember feeling that he really cared. And we were grateful that he was able to accommodate all of our special requests. Sadly, our mom passed away during the pandemic. Things got complicated. Scott Dixon went above and beyond to make the best of the difficult situation in which we found ourselves. My brother and I (his caretaker) were heartbroken that we couldn't travel to the burial because of his underlying conditions. It touched our hearts that Scott thought to take pictures of mom's tiny safe distance burial service and send them to me. We are so grateful Scott did this - and without us even asking. I have read articles in recent years about problems with the funeral industry taking advantage of families at such a vulnerable time. I also read that there were funeral homes cropping up with more ethical practices, more affordable options, and who refrained from manipulative sales tactics and hidden fees. Families First Funeral Care is one of them. They did a fantastic job for our family. I am so glad we found this wonderful funeral home run by such lovely people.
