I love it. Beautiful. I live in a city with a huge, gorgeous, historically relevant cemetery/green space with notable dead folks from history. And it is one of my favorite places. So Bonaventure was always on my list to visit, with or without pop culture references (Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil) or status as a tourist stop. A little bit outside of the city, but not terribly difficult to get to, there is a small parking lot for visitors, with public toilets and maps available. They have tour options, but you can also just walk yourself around. The big gravesite draws (Johnny Mercer, Conrad Aiken) are well marked and fairly easy to find on your own. The place is beautiful and very well maintained. Large cemeteries were often meant as strolling green spaces, meant to be visited and used. But do be aware and conscientious if there appears to be a service going on. I could have spent ages and ages walking every path and taking in the loveliness. Highly recommend a visit here, with enough time to wander and sit and see. read more

I was only in Savannah for about 10 hours and someone working at Wormsloe told me I had to stop here. I loved that you have the option to drive or walk. I didn't spot any parking right away so I decided to drive through, which turned out to be a great way to see more in a short amount of time. I still got out of my car to walk around a bit when I wanted to see something up close. The area is gorgeous, plenty of shade from the beautiful trees. I only stayed for 20 minutes but it was a perfect and quick way to explore the cemetery. It's also free, so nothing better than that! read more

Not much to say that I haven't said before. Not like the place has changed a ton over the years! I did visit when the azaleas were in mad bloom, and that was a treat. They were gone within two weeks when I returned. A great, old gothic cemetery with views of the marsh. Great photo ops. Again, I visited in a time crunch after boarding a 6 AM flight to Savannah, so I would still like to do the golf cart tours. Staff are always welcoming and helpful. Nice cemetery to walk around during the daytime. There's no charge except for an Uber (if not driving), so that's a good thing. We went here not knowing who was buried here, but some of the tombstones and memorials looked pretty cool and well maintained. I recommend visiting if you have some time in Savannah. I use two different wheelchairs. When I'm outside, where the terrain is bumpy and uneven, I use a motorized chair. I think this is important to know when I tell you that Bonaventure Cemetery was probably the most accessible part of Savannah that I experienced. Yes, there's grass, gravel and sand. But there's also sidewalks and roads. All of it flat. I love cemeteries. I love thinking about the lives of the people buried there and what the city must have been like when they were alive. I love seeing how families chose to commemorate their loved ones. I have been wanting to visit Bonaventure for decades but never thought I'd actually do it. This Cemetery is the one from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and it's absolutely gorgeous with the drapery of Spanish moss and the palm trees. We spent several hours exploring it, and tracking down Gracie. She's the local celebrity and her grave is definitely worth finding. The grave next to hers is also breathtaking. The bathrooms at the front gate are surprisingly accessible and wonderfully air conditioned. I appreciated that after being out in the blazing sunshine and heat. If you're a fan of the more macabre I would definitely recommend a stop here. It's free. read more

This is a beautiful historic cemetery. I have only been to Savannah one other time, and only for another day, so both short visits. Last time I didn't make it to this famous cemetery, so this time it was a point of interest I was sure to stop in. It's much further away from the heart of downtown/waterfront Savannah than I realized. It's also much larger at over 100 acres! It was crowded around 2pm on a Saturday but we were able to find a parking spot, get a map and our bearings, and head off to the ancient part by the water and walked around for about an hour looking at tombstones and admiring the gorgeous old oaks covered in Spanish moss. I bet this cemetery is beautiful in summer when all the flowers were blooming. It's lovely. Both a nature preserve and a cemetery filled with some very detailed and ornate burial crypts and monuments. Unfortunately, if you are looking for the famous statue from the movie and book, you won't find it here, it's been removed to a museum. Still well worth a visit. read more

The best way to enjoy the cemetery is to book one of the cemetery tours. For the average person who is not a history buff or a cemetery fanatic, the cemetery is huge and the tombstones aren't very informative. The cemetery itself is beautiful and is surrounded by oak trees with Spanish moss. The trees make the cemetery look like something out of a movie. Even if you don't know the history of the cemetery, it is a beautiful space to stroll around. The tombstones in the old and the modern cemetery feature different architectural elements and you can spend a good hour looking at all the tombstones. Honestly, I was curious about Conrad Aiken's grave. After reading of a legend that Aiken wanted his tombstone in the form of a bench so that poetry lovers could sit there and enjoy a drink while taking in the view overlooking the Wilmington River, I was intrigued. So glad we visited Bonaventure Cemetery. It was peaceful and hauntingly beautiful on a cold winter's day. Loved the old live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss. Wandered around and looked at the grave markers and monuments (many are works of art) dedicated to those that have been laid to rest here. This may seem odd to say, but this is the most beautiful cemetery I've ever been to...not that I frequent cemeteries. But Bonaventure Cemetery is a place you must visit in Savannah as you'll learn not only about those who are buried here, but of Savannah's deep-rooted history. On the second weekend of every month, there's a free walking tour of the Bonaventure Cemetery that's done by the Bonaventure Historical Society. I highly recommend doing this if you happen to be in Savannah then. I was able to take advantage of this opportunity while in town and I learned A TON about Savannah and the cemetery having done this walking tour versus walking the cemetery without a guide. The Bonaventure Cemetery used to be a plantation until it was sold in the mid-1800's as a cemetery, which now consists of 160-acres. The cemetery has many well-known residents of the area buried here, including Johnny Mercer, Conrad Aiken, Edward Telfair, etc. Most of those buried here, especially when the cemetery first opened was a place where the wealthy would be buried as is seen from the different ornate headstones, tombs, etc. The cemetery is designed as a victorian garden, with plenty of live oak trees and spanish moss around. It definitely has that spooky vibe to it from the spanish moss, which is no wonder why people say it's one of the most haunted places around. Or they've seen a ghost here. Even for the superstitious, Bonaventure Cemetery is a must-visit when in the Savannah area. read more

Seems sort of odd the tout a cemetery as a good tourist destination but here we are. It's quite possibly the most picturesque setting yours truly saw in all of Savannah. It's quite old, and many of the gravestones date back to the mid 1800's. There's an undeniable aesthetic to the style and look of the place, albeit a graveyard. The grounds are beautifully covered with green foliage including plenty of oaks covered in Spanish Moss that cast a beautiful shade and backdrop to the scenery. It's not macabre or creepy (during the day - if you go at night you're mileage may vary) but rather, serene and peaceful. It's quiet but open to the public and makes for a nice stroll. Come pay Bonaventure a visit, be respectful, bring a camera and bring some mosquito spray. read more

Did you know that this is one of the beautiful cemeteries in the world? It's on the top 10 list. Its hauntingly gorgeous, especially with the Spanish moss hanging from the live oak trees. It's a southern gothic style cemetery. It's huge, so it would take some time if you want to explore it completely. Bonaventure is a must-see while in Savannah! We have visited there countless times over the years and the one complaint I have is that the golf cart tours are so numerous now that it becomes difficult for the rest of us to get around and experience the peace of the place. While I do appreciate their efforts to make the large cemetery accessible to everyone, the tour leaders have to be loud to make sure the tourists can hear them, and they will walk up on you while youre trying to view areas. The cemetery is beautifully maintained, mostly (the headstones and concrete tossed down the cliff at the back near the river is disturbing and hasnt been cleaned up in YEARS). The restrooms at the front of the cemetery are clean and well maintained - the portapotties in the center of the cemetery are in the sunniest spot, out in the open, and not very clean. Walking around the cemetery is usually pretty peaceful, and the history is so interesting! A must see while in Savannah! read more

I am shocked I have never reviewed this cemetery before. Maybe I wasn't ready. My dear mother is buried here near a beautiful oak tree. When she passed away we new this was the place for her. She was an avid reader and loved the book Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil especially because we lived there during that time and knew many of the people portrayed in the book and certainly every location mentioned. I was fortunate to get a first edition book signed for her by the author. Although years ago I remember being the first person in line. The movie sucked however and Savannah peeps hate it. The cemetery itself is a serene and peaceful spot for me and I could stay there for hours. Many old hospital coworkers and friends are there and it is nice to pay your respects. The tourists can be annoying and disrespectful at times especially when a funeral is taking place but I can't blame them for coming. It's loaded with history. I have pictures but I can't make myself post them so you will have to visit yourself. Somehow it doesn't seem right to me. read more

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was filmed here, depicting nonfictional local life. The cemetery is a 'must visit', which I have done annually for over a decade. Tours are available, as are maps in the gift/guest house at the entrance; however, there is no charge to slowly drive around enjoying the beautiful ambiance. This cemetery is silent but busy. There are so many golf carts and walking tours around the cemetery but since it is huge it is spread out so it's relatively quiet. If you look up the cemetery on Google maps you can find the pins dropped if the famous graves and parking. There is not a "basin park garden" not sure why Google states that. But there are about 10~15 parking spots at the parking area by the river. It is a great spot as that it's close to the Aiken grave and the statues in this area are so beautiful.
