Feels weird to write a review of a cemetery but it was stunning and everything I wanted it to be. We did a golf cart tour which gave us so much great info. Absolutely a must see when you visit the area.
This is a beautiful cemetery with various types of headstones and markers. It has some interesting historical gravesites that you can view and learn more about. You can walk through all the way to the river and have a picnic if you like. Lots of trees and vegetation.
Bonaventure Cemetery has beckoned me many times over the years just to drop by for a leisurely stroll or to take a picture or 2 as I walk the beautiful grounds. I see something new, without fail, every visit I make to this grand cemetery. From war time plots and memorials to non de script burials, there is something here for you to see if you enjoy history. There is no charge to walk the grounds and there are always picturesque views to enjoy and capture on your phone. Spanish moss, azaleas, and giant oaks cover the expansive grounds of Bonaventure, and I hope that you take a moment to stop by and enjoy everything that it has to offer.
Very beautiful cemetery. Try to come when the azaleas are in bloom. They also give tours. Check internet.
A beautiful cemetery. Unfortunately I live in Richmond and compare every cemetery to our beloved Hollywood cemetery which still can't be beat. The Spanish moss at Bonaventure is so special. I loved all the monuments. I wish people had a bit more respect as there were a lot of loud obnoxious trucks and people walking the grounds but maybe just an off day. Regardless, I'll always go back.
Not much to say that I haven't said before. Not like the place has changed a ton over the years! I did visit when the azaleas were in mad bloom, and that was a treat. They were gone within two weeks when I returned. A great, old gothic cemetery with views of the marsh. Great photo ops. Again, I visited in a time crunch after boarding a 6 AM flight to Savannah, so I would still like to do the golf cart tours. Staff are always welcoming and helpful. Could come back here again and again and find a new angle to appreciate each time.
If you are interested in visiting cemeteries this is a very nice one. Easy to walk around and they have a riding tour also if you don't want to walk.
I found this place fascinating and beyond. The creativity and uniqueness of how folks laid their loved ones to rest long ago is wild! No expense was spared! My grandparents and mother are all from Georgia and I always wondered why they seemed so caught up with funerals and showing your respects. Seriously I've always said my family spent more money on funerals than weddings and babies. Crazy but a true story. This place is peaceful and stunning.
Nice cemetery to walk around during the daytime. There's no charge except for an Uber (if not driving), so that's a good thing. We went here not knowing who was buried here, but some of the tombstones and memorials looked pretty cool and well maintained. I recommend visiting if you have some time in Savannah. It's not very far from downtown.
Let me get this out of the way first - wear mosquito repellent! The cemetery is so rich in history, combined with gorgeous grounds and stories of families who contributed to the beauty and success Savannah has achieved to this day. Each grave is a piece of art in addition to a reverent resting place. You can do a self guided tour or join a guided tour. I recommend d having a knowledgeable guide that can speak to the history and significance of the sites you see. Definitely a location not to be missed in Savannah.
Beautiful cemetery but having not read the book that's it's famous for, it was not very personally significant to me... wear bug spray. Tons of bug bites after just a short visit. The cemetery is also 100 acres so finding specific gravesites is a challenge (even with their map).
I use two different wheelchairs. When I'm outside, where the terrain is bumpy and uneven, I use a motorized chair. I think this is important to know when I tell you that Bonaventure Cemetery was probably the most accessible part of Savannah that I experienced. Yes, there's grass, gravel and sand. But there's also sidewalks and roads. All of it flat. I love cemeteries. I love thinking about the lives of the people buried there and what the city must have been like when they were alive. I love seeing how families chose to commemorate their loved ones. I have been wanting to visit Bonaventure for decades but never thought I'd actually do it. This Cemetery is the one from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and it's absolutely gorgeous with the drapery of Spanish moss and the palm trees. We spent several hours exploring it, and tracking down Gracie. She's the local celebrity and her grave is definitely worth finding. The grave next to hers is also breathtaking. The bathrooms at the front gate are surprisingly accessible and wonderfully air conditioned. I appreciated that after being out in the blazing sunshine and heat. If you're a fan of the more macabre I would definitely recommend a stop here. It's free.
A beautiful, serene, dramatic place to spend a few hours strolling around or taking a tour. One of the top cemetery I visited. A must see while in Savannah.

I was only in Savannah for about 10 hours and someone working at Wormsloe told me I had to stop here. I loved that you have the option to drive or walk. I didn't spot any parking right away so I decided to drive through, which turned out to be a great way to see more in a short amount of time. I still got out of my car to walk around a bit when I wanted to see something up close. The area is gorgeous, plenty of shade from the beautiful trees. I only stayed for 20 minutes but it was a perfect and quick way to explore the cemetery. It's also free, so nothing better than that! read more

This place is amazing. The atmosphere, the history, the peace you feel walking around. Yes this is a short review but there is not much to say about a cemetery that my photos can't tell better read more

This is a beautiful historic cemetery. I have only been to Savannah one other time, and only for another day, so both short visits. Last time I didn't make it to this famous cemetery, so this time it was a point of interest I was sure to stop in. It's much further away from the heart of downtown/waterfront Savannah than I realized. It's also much larger at over 100 acres! It was crowded around 2pm on a Saturday but we were able to find a parking spot, get a map and our bearings, and head off to the ancient part by the water and walked around for about an hour looking at tombstones and admiring the gorgeous old oaks covered in Spanish moss. I bet this cemetery is beautiful in summer when all the flowers were blooming. It's lovely. Both a nature preserve and a cemetery filled with some very detailed and ornate burial crypts and monuments. Unfortunately, if you are looking for the famous statue from the movie and book, you won't find it here, it's been removed to a museum. Still well worth a visit. read more
The best way to enjoy the cemetery is to book one of the cemetery tours. For the average person who is not a history buff or a cemetery fanatic, the cemetery is huge and the tombstones aren't very informative. The cemetery itself is beautiful and is surrounded by oak trees with Spanish moss. The trees make the cemetery look like something out of a movie. Even if you don't know the history of the cemetery, it is a beautiful space to stroll around. The tombstones in the old and the modern cemetery feature different architectural elements and you can spend a good hour looking at all the tombstones. It's definitely a place worth visiting if it's your first time in Savannah and you want the full tourist experience. read more

Honestly, I was curious about Conrad Aiken's grave. After reading of a legend that Aiken wanted his tombstone in the form of a bench so that poetry lovers could sit there and enjoy a drink while taking in the view overlooking the Wilmington River, I was intrigued. So glad we visited Bonaventure Cemetery. It was peaceful and hauntingly beautiful on a cold winter's day. Loved the old live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss. Wandered around and looked at the grave markers and monuments (many are works of art) dedicated to those that have been laid to rest here. And Aiken's grave was everything I imagined it would be. read more

This may seem odd to say, but this is the most beautiful cemetery I've ever been to...not that I frequent cemeteries. But Bonaventure Cemetery is a place you must visit in Savannah as you'll learn not only about those who are buried here, but of Savannah's deep-rooted history. On the second weekend of every month, there's a free walking tour of the Bonaventure Cemetery that's done by the Bonaventure Historical Society. I highly recommend doing this if you happen to be in Savannah then. I was able to take advantage of this opportunity while in town and I learned A TON about Savannah and the cemetery having done this walking tour versus walking the cemetery without a guide. The Bonaventure Cemetery used to be a plantation until it was sold in the mid-1800's as a cemetery, which now consists of 160-acres. The cemetery has many well-known residents of the area buried here, including Johnny Mercer, Conrad Aiken, Edward Telfair, etc. Most of those buried here, especially when the cemetery first opened was a place where the wealthy would be buried as is seen from the different ornate headstones, tombs, etc. The cemetery is designed as a victorian garden, with plenty of live oak trees and spanish moss around. It definitely has that spooky vibe to it from the spanish moss, which is no wonder why people say it's one of the most haunted places around. Or they've seen a ghost here. Even for the superstitious, Bonaventure Cemetery is a must-visit when in the Savannah area. read more
Seems sort of odd the tout a cemetery as a good tourist destination but here we are. It's quite possibly the most picturesque setting yours truly saw in all of Savannah. It's quite old, and many of the gravestones date back to the mid 1800's. There's an undeniable aesthetic to the style and look of the place, albeit a graveyard. The grounds are beautifully covered with green foliage including plenty of oaks covered in Spanish Moss that cast a beautiful shade and backdrop to the scenery. It's not macabre or creepy (during the day - if you go at night you're mileage may vary) but rather, serene and peaceful. It's quiet but open to the public and makes for a nice stroll. Come pay Bonaventure a visit, be respectful, bring a camera and bring some mosquito spray. read more
A unique and scenic experience seeing the Bonaventure Cemetery. An old cemetery with hanging moss and notable grave stones. The cemetery is easy to access and the multi roads take you all over the land and backs the Wilmington River. A cool and interesting experience to see. read more
So much history is here! It's beautiful. I didn't do a tour, but planned to next time because I would really like to see all the places that are mentioned in the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." It's free to tour. read more

Bonaventure is a beautiful well kept cemetery, there are small lots for parking in multiple places around the cemetery route. The app provides a good tour with lots of interesting information and history which you can drive or walk through-we did both. read more

On a Savannah walking tour earlier last week our tour guide asked our group if anyone was going to visit the cemetery. It wasn't on our radar but it offered us an opportunity to add it to our itinerary now that we were aware of it. After lunch in Savannah today we drove to the cemetery. We picked up a cemetery map. We walked around an hour. Found Johnny Mercer's family plot. The cemetery itself is impressive. Very gothic and much Spanish moss. read more

Did you know that this is one of the beautiful cemeteries in the world? It's on the top 10 list. Its hauntingly gorgeous, especially with the Spanish moss hanging from the live oak trees. It's a southern gothic style cemetery. It's huge, so it would take some time if you want to explore it completely. We didn't have any time, so we just had a short stroll and appreciated the beauty but I highly recommend taking a tour from a Knowledgeable tour guide because it has a rich history. The entrance is free and there is lot of free parking in the premises. read more

Can easily spend a few hours studying all the ancient gravestones in this historic cemetery. So much to see! Very peaceful and scenic. Great stop for tourists and locals alike. Was worried about parking, but there were plenty of empty spots by the main entrance. You can drive through the cemetery (through the main road) and look for parking in multiple designated areas on premises. Cars are always going in and out, so even if all the slots are busy, if you wait a bit, you'll get a spot. read more
This is def a must see on your adventures through Savannah! What a beautiful, peaceful place to visit. The statures are stunningly haunting. BEWARE THOUGH...They lock the gate without checking to see if there's anyone still visiting. My gf and I were LOCKED IN! Yes, I said LOCKED IN! It was hysterical and terrifying all at the same time!! We had to call 911 to get out, I would have happily stayed all night but my gf wasn't about that at all. Great memories for sure. read more

I found the Bonaventure Cemetery as the # 1 place to visit in Savannah, GA and I can see why. It's incredibly beautiful. Pay your respects to the locals, and visit their graves with great respect. The cemetery is clean but it could be better kept. The trees and bushes need a good trim. Some areas need attention urgently. read more

Many historical Savannah and area citizens have been buried here, and for centuries local residents picnicked among the stunning monuments. Along with Savannah's founders and finest, one can find Johnny Mercer and Gracie, beloved child of local Innkeeper. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was filmed here, depicting nonfictional local life. The cemetery is a 'must visit', which I have done annually for over a decade. Tours are available, as are maps in the gift/guest house at the entrance; however, there is no charge to slowly drive around enjoying the beautiful ambiance. Even taking a picnic to eat along the river is an easy way to relax away from current news and unpleasant situations. read more
This cemetery is silent but busy. There are so many golf carts and walking tours around the cemetery but since it is huge it is spread out so it's relatively quiet. If you look up the cemetery on Google maps you can find the pins dropped if the famous graves and parking. There is not a "basin park garden" not sure why Google states that. But there are about 10~15 parking spots at the parking area by the river. It is a great spot as that it's close to the Aiken grave and the statues in this area are so beautiful. Drive thru the front gate on your right. I did not stop and get a cemetery map as I just love walking and looking generally read more
